Why is it so Easy to be Thin in Japan?

Comparing the food environment of the U.S. to Japan's.

This video highlights the difference between the food environment of America and Japan. America's obesity rate is about 30% (biggest state is 37.7%, smallest 22.3%) whereas Japan's obesity rate is 3.5%
While there's other countries on each side of the obesity spectrum, I chose to compare these two because I grew up in America and spent the last 7 years here in Japan. The places that I describe as "reasonably healthy" in Japan aren't necessarily places I recommend as "optimally healthy" - I'm simply point out that while convenient food in America ranges from very unhealthy to unhealthy, convenient food in Japan ranges from very unhealthy to pretty healthy.

To anticipate more comments on kimchi: Yes, kimchi/キムチ/김치 is a traditional ethnic food of Korea. It's also widely available in Japan. Perhaps another fermented food would have been a better example, but I like kimchi

Where I live there's a place that serves ramen, and kimchi is one of the things you can have on the side. Love mixing the two, just eat some ramen, then kimchi, back to ramen and so forth. Delicious.

Aren't Koreans historically one of the many ethnicities that had brought their own culture with them, to the Japanese? I'm really just pawing at memories of my Asia History subjects, but I know Korean communities have assimilated their culture with Japan, like in a sense Chinese communities are historically and globally.

As true as that is, you made it sound like 김치 is a Japanese staple which is misinformation.
@mklives2

This video is unscientific. The most likely cause is genes. Many western women and some western men put on loads of weight when they live in Japan, because Japanese food is so delicious and because Japan has a real eating culture. It's very popular to eat out in Japan, and when you eat out, you eat a lot. I've noticed many Japanese people eating as much as western people yet still thin. Also I've known many many Japanese living in Australia long-term, and none of them were obese.

If tree bark were marketed well, Lots of ericans would eat it. Truth is that statistics (look it up) Americans eat far more than anyone else in the planet. Also there's large amounts of ignorance in the U.S.

@Sarah Ball - The unhealthy food in america is the cheapest and quickest food available. People who don't have much money for their families or don't have much time because of working schedules tend to go for this type, simply because it's the most convienent. The higher rates of obesity are seen in the lower classes.

Peer pressure. In Japan, even when you are slightly overweight, even strangers will tell you to your face that you are fat. When you get significantly overweight, your boss will setup meetings with you about how it is unacceptable, as it will impact the business and you can be fired if you don't abide by the performance plan to reduce your obesity. The better question is "why is it so hard to be fat in Japan" and the answer is that its not tolerated by society. It'd be like saying "why is it so much easier for women to dress conservatively in the middle-east" and its simply because if they dressed like you see in London they would be beaten. Japanese food isn't really healthier either, its extremely high in sodium, much more than even the American diet, which is the leading theory about why stomach cancer rates are so high in Japan.

Definitely a combination of lifestyle , diet, portion size, and how much more activity they might be doing. In Japan they can more than likely walk or bike to more places because they have more sidewalks. Living in NYC I can walk to alot of places or drive. But in other states i've noticed you're not getting anywhere unless you have a car. At the end of the day , regardless where you live if you eat more calories than you burn you'll get fat especially if done over a prolonged period.

I lost about 8kg in my first month in Tokyo. That's slowed down ofc, but for me it's two reasons, portion size and walking. Even if you're ordering junk food, meals for one person are smaller for what you pay; I never feel overstuffed. The cheapest and most practical way to get anywhere in Tokyo is walking and you walk a surprising amount when you have a couple of transfers between train lines and to and from stations.

Many Japanese people like tea, seafood, and soybean foods (tofu and edamame), and this is one of the factors that contributes to a healthy diet. It is also worth noting that Japanese supermarkets discount sashimi and sushi to half price near closing time. Since raw fish must be sold on the same day, this is done every day, so even the poor can eat fish.
@ryo-wc6hv
@ryo-wc6hv 4 месяца назад
Furthermore, when meat is used in Japanese home cooking, it is often cut into small pieces or thinly sliced, which contributes to a healthy diet. Meat dishes are often not prepared with meat alone. Meat and vegetables are cooked together. Therefore, even with meat dishes, I often eat the same amount of vegetables as the meat, or even more. Moreover, since the cooking method often involves baking or boiling, there are many cases where large amounts of fat are not used.

We Japanese eat a lot of vegetables. You can't choose ingredients at restaurants. We never say like please hold onions or cucumbers or whatever. We eat everything what we are served. Our education especially when it comes to food is very strict. there are so many dishes with lot of vegetables with no oil. also our desert recipes are much lighter than American's. we use less sugar and less oil in cakes and cookies. and it's true we have access to lot of healthy foods at grocery stores and supermarkets. I was so skinny when I was in Japan, now I live in America and having hard time to lose weight.

I travelled to Japan last month for the very first time and lost 3-4kg and I only stayed there for 11 days even though I had 3 meals a day and some late night snacks. I do so much walking and have to stand all day because the seats are limited in Japan. Back in my country I went to the gym more than 3 times a week and was never able to lose that much weight in a short time

@ArkSucksAtGames

Actually if you start a healthy diet and workout it’s pretty easy to stay thin in the U.S. But the hard part is working out and starting these diets when you are already obese. It can be difficult to break these habits.

I was happy that all the school lunches at my elementary school were delicious. We played rock-paper-scissors for leftover jelly and okonomiyaki, and had another helping of curry. Vegetable stew and sesame paste were also much tastier than those from convenience stores, now that I think about it. The boys ate a lot. Many students looked forward to lunch very much. By the way, I heard that there are places in Japan where you can eat reproduced school lunches, so if you want to try Japanese school lunches, you might want to look for them.
