It was called Spanish Town because the Spanish had it as the Capital city of the island. When the British took over, they moved the capital to Kingston on the east coast and changed most of the names or made them sound english, scottish, irish or welsh. All the inhabitants past and present have Uk surnames as a result, similar to blacks in the Us who were former slaves

@alexzander1839 6 лет назад
BritishJamaican777, Kingston didn't become the capital until 1872. I think that also the same year that the mongoose was imported to Jamaica to eliminate snakes from the cane fields. That is 217 years after the British took control of Jamaica.

Anthony Brown Spain brought in the 1st enslaved Africans, their descendants are known as the Maroons. Also, not all Taino /Arawaks were killed off, they intermarried with the Maroons and their DNA, can be found, especially amongst people on the south coast, St Elizabeth. I'm from Santa Cruz St . Elizabeth and I have Taino DNA. Spain & Portugal started the transatlantic slave trade. Britain didn't enter until well after and Britain was the 1st nation to end it, 1804, by Wilberforce. Slavery officially ended under the British in 1834 - 38. Spain 1492- 1886 Cuba & Brasil 1888.

Spanish brought in the first slaves, some of they're descendants are referred to as the Maroons, The Jamaican flag is designed after the Scottish flag, the colours being different. Not all traces of the Taino/ Arawak are gone. Many people on the South Coast retain Taino DNA in there blood lines. I'm Jamaican (Santa Cruz/South coast) and have some indigenous DNA in my genealogy.

er no. Ocho Rios is Spanish/Portugese meaning Eight Rivers.
@style317
@style317 6 лет назад
BritishJamaican777 yeah I know and that’s obvious, but the reason why the name came about is because Las Chorerras became corrupted over time. there aren’t actually eight rivers in the area, but there are waterfalls, which is what las Chorerras means
@ginaglam559
@ginaglam559 6 лет назад
Great knowledge
@BritishJamaican777
@BritishJamaican777 6 лет назад
I understand that, and waterfalls turn into rivers, which are less dangerous and more useful to the inhabitants. The geography to the early colonizers would have been very different to what it is now, nearly 600 years later, so back then, they would have named it the way they saw it. So if they called it Eight Rivers, it's more than likely it was because there were Eight Rivers/Ocho Rios, especially as it was a local natural landmark. Rivers are also seen before their source, the waterfall, hence the name change from 'the waterfalls' to Eight Rivers/Ocho Rios, which the waterfalls had branched off from. Since then, earthquakes and re-routing of rivers, filling them in to build on has occurred, shifting the topography of the landscape and natural waterways, meaning that what was once there and gave meaning to an ancient place name, is sadly no longer there which means the descendants then believe that a 'corruption' of language has happened and given the name a different meaning to the past name/names. peace

You are right. The UK royal family are of German descent and the names in the island were in tribute or honour to them, one of them being the now extinct House of Hannover in the UK Royal family. After slavery was abolished, a large group of Germans went to Jamaica as endentured workers and formed their own town named Seaford in the Parish of St Catherine (google it). Others went to Jamaica, such as Irish, Indian, Lebanese, Chinese for the same reasons after slavery and are in the minority. :-)

the video fails to say that the Jamaica name arose because the Spaniards formerly used the X (xaymaica) as if it were a "Spanish J" .. as well as in Spanish the word Mexico is written México or México or Texas = Tejas ... the British later adopted a version of the Spanish name Xamaica = Jamaica and now in Spanish the name Jamaica is also used but pronouncing differently similar to the original

4:14 Europeans didn't capture the slaves. At that time in Africa, among tribes at war with each other, one tribe would capture and in effect enslave the other. They would then be taken to the shore where Europeans would buy the captured tribe for slaves as Europeans wouldn't go inland on Africa to avoid catching things like malaria.

Hey dude great vid, but the double l’s in Spanish, such as in “Sevilla” or “Villa.” Are pronounces as ‘y’. So those words would basically be pronounced as “Seveeya” and “Veeya.” There are different pronunciations around the world such as more of a soft ‘j’ sound mixed with a ‘y’ sound. But it’s definitely not “Savila”

3:37-3:58 I read a travel guide of Jamaica mentioned on their historical section Jamaica only was conquered by the British after their failure, led by a armed garrison of Oliver Cromwell, of caputuring the Spanish colony of the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo (1493-1821) where they were repulsed by a smaller Spanish militia. 4:07-4:29 there is still a strong element of West African heritage in Jamaica, especially in the dance, dialect, foodways, music, speech patterns, spirituality mainly particularly from the Akan people (Fante and Twi).

danielle g.: I have checked out certain words through Google Translate (GT). I am not sure how 'Las Chorerras' became 'waterfall', but it doesnt mean waterfall in any language I have checked, that is; Spanish, Portuguese or Italian, those being the closest Latin-Romano languages of Europe. Las Chorerras is Spanish, which translated to English means 'the Cholera, (you may want to research it for yourself :-)) a deadly disease brought to the Caribbean from Europe, and is a bacterial infection causing fever, vomiting and diarrhoea/running belly. So I guess a 'waterfall' but from underneath you! Eng. eight = Spn. ocho/Por. Otio. Eng. river = Spn. Rio/Por. Rio. = Ocho Rios. My hunch is that the colonizers drank the water from these rivers, and because their immune systems were not used to the natural bacteria in them, which the Natives would have natural immunity from, when the foreigners drank the water and developed The Cholera or Las Chorerras as the Spanish called it, *that* is how the slang name came about, (the same way the disease Ebola is named after the Ebola river where the disease was first recorded in modern times). The name Eight Rivers/Ocho Rios *was* first while they were new to the land and having a great time, but when the disease broke out and they started to die, in anger and dispair, called it Las Chorerras, maybe as a warning to other Europeans to come. But no, there was no name corruption at any time. Us Jamaicans have a very 'romanticized' view of the Spanish/Portuguese, saying that they were 'kinder' and 'less harsh/brutal' than the English, but the facts are the Spanish were just as brutal if not more so than the English, so we try to sanitize what the Spanish said/did to fit with that narrative. Please note; to anyone reading this and are current Spanish/Portugese/Italian/Iberian, we know you are not like your ancestors, so dont be offended by these historical facts.

Unfortunately, most of the names in Jamaica are actually from Scotland. Scottish people eagerly jumped into all of levels of meting out atrocities to black people on the island of Jamaica from captains of slave ships to slave plantation owners. Even the Jamaican flag was designed by a Scotsman to look like the Scottish flag. I believe Jamaica should at the very least change its national flag, i.e. keep the colours, change the design.

@@drrd4127 By that time 'home' was Jamaica. If you are literally imprisoned in a place for 155 years, you don't know any other place to go. Mr NameExplain, I have some information that I think you might find interesting: At minute 3:14 you mention Esquivel as a harbour. Well I live in Basque Country, Spain, in a province that's called Álava. If you stare out my living room window, you may be able to see a pointy hill with an old ruined tower called "Esquíbel"!! Cool, right? Well what if I say that there are some other interesting village names in my province? Like, for example, the town of Guebara, where a fortress used to stand high up a hill. Or mabybe the village of Bolíbar, next to a mountain range. I hope you find that interesting, as it has a lot of historical background of the people who adventured themselves... and rather unfortunately killed lots of poor natives... Sorry about that

My feeling is that the natives north of Mexico had spiritual beliefs that respected the land to where they would had either been complacent with what they had, or much more respectful of other cultures that we were of theirs. Good question. Hanover is one of the parishes in the county of Cornwall. The UK royal family are of German descent and during slavery, the names in the island were in tribute or honour to them, (or the Spanish Royals) one of them being the now extinct House of Hannover in the UK Royal family. :-)

+tow.gen.Filip Well, that's because that symbol has two versions (one and two strokes) and some typographers just assumed that they are the same sign which is why in some fonts the dollar sign has one stroke and in others two. However, the Spanish origins isn't the only hypothesis, another I have heard as well is that is a simplified ligature of ‹U› and ‹S› as in one is on top of the other, among other ideas! Also, is just one banner, actually is the same symbol as the one on the Spanish code of arms on this very video.
