Mary Pacherres has been on dialysis for eight years to treat her chronic kidney disease, which is impacting rural communities throughout Peru. Both of her brothers died from the same disease. While the exact causes are still unknown, researchers speculate that heat stress and dehydration are the main culprits along with exposure to agricultural chemicals, unsafe working conditions, and the effects of climate change.

Factors that are speculated to contribute to kidney disease amongst Peruvians include environmental conditions and dehydration while working. What are your thoughts on the stories shared here?
@Jevisdoncjesuis

I'd say it's several factors. But I think one parameter is missing ; sugar. I know that in Latin America drinking Coke instead of water is normal. And the consequences are dramatic (ex Mexico). Thanks for the video.

I'd say agrochemicals. Big problems with them in Argentina, also, on small agricultural towns. Or maybe even mining, as leaks have repeated in certain parts of Argentina, and no doubt Peru also, which leaks such dangerous chemicals as cyanide. It's sad, but when something like this happens, it often has to do with some rich corporation or landowner cutting corners to illegal and unethical extremes for the sake of earnings, and lack of control from the government.

@@naruto5682 No it's not. It can be inherited, but the major cause of renal failure around the world is uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes. And some, like mine, have no explanation at all: just the luck, or not, of the draw. But in most developed countries the risk of developing kidney failure is now 1 in 3, and most people have no idea until they end up in the emergency department.

For a family having to go through this, one after another member is just too heartbreaking. I really hope they stay strong and that the researchers could finally figure out the main cause of this. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.

This is also happening in Tlajomulco, Jalisco, Mexico. For the past 5 years the rate of atypical kidney disease has skyrocketed among the under 30 year population. But authorities blame it on genetics. But it is well know it has a high pollution in water due to the amount of factories and farms sharing the same land.
@thapeloheath
@thapeloheath 5 лет назад
Yes, that sounds plausible. I'm in southern Mexico, and fortunately the water sources seem pretty clean as they come from the mountains with no industry and minimal chemical agriculture. Diabetes is all over the place, of course, and insane consumption of bubbly sugar drinks is what i hang it upon, along with a widespread cultural resistance to fasting. They are as petrified of skipping meals as people i grew up around in the coddled north. Let alone giving their body a whole day to cleanse! Add to that cheap dry bread with dough conditioners taken before breakfast and after dinner with sugary coffee, and i cringe thinking about their poor innards. On the bright side, there's a progressive element in society here, and some of these people investigating health and nutrition have (unlike among my people) parents or grandparents with significant herbal knowledge. Also on the bright side, the bloqueos around here are a longstanding tradition absolutely lethal to industry or industrialised agriculture. I've come to view it like the broken leg that saves the person from dying in an avalanche that kills all his two-legged friends.

so much inequality in the society makes the poor suffer more. They're human too and they need good enough food and drinking water to survive. In the western countries, you'll see people are wasting food, wasting money on drinking alcohol, why not you guys just donate this money? If you donate then you'll get a good society where people will not kill people for money. I am planning to help these help but me alone in not enough, we need to support each other first so that we can support them.

It's weird they didn't follow someone with one of the mysterious/unknown causes of kidney problems instead of an uncontrolled diabetic whose problem is clearly identifiable (if not necessarily treatable in her area).
@Tamaresque
@Tamaresque 6 лет назад
How do you know she's an uncontrolled diabetic? After nine years on dialysis they'd have that under control. However, if she's having trouble breathing then she's clearly overloaded with fluid and her machine clearances need to be adjusted up ASAP. The mum giving her fluids is the worst thing she could have done. That and not taking her to the hospital immediately.
@davidbuschhorn6539
@davidbuschhorn6539 6 лет назад
She keeps talking about, "I don't feel sugary." so mom says "Here, have some more sugar water, you've been drinking it all day." I'm guessing here, (as a Type I diabetic for 36 years) that non-diabetics wouldn't even have that in their vocabulary. They show her legs occasionally and there seems to be skin breakdown :-( When I was little, at diabetic camp, there was a counselor who was maybe... 25? Huge lesion on her shin from diabetes. It would scab over. Scab would fall off and it would be a little bigger. Now this was in the early 80s when control was more difficult. The pump hadn't even been invented yet. I recently asked one of the other counselors if she knew what happened to that gal. "Probably dead. She was really uncontrolled." Long story short (too late!), her legs looked like that girls, with the blotches and bruise-y discolorations. :-(

The problem is that, until you're close to death, there are no symptoms. They said that in the video. That's why the public health programs aimed at combatting kidney failure stress getting tested regularly. All it takes is a simple urine test and the disease can be slowed with diet, lifestyle, and drug therapy.

Across most of the world 1 in 3 of us are at risk of developing kidney failure. Most of that is caused by diabetes or inherited polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and the rest is chance. There are no symptoms until you are close to death so please get your kidey function checked once a year. All it takes is a urine sample. Early detection means a long life. I was diagnosed at 17 and I'm now 65, so living proof of that. I started dialysis at 27, had a transplant the same year, which lasted 20 years. Then 4 more years of dialysis before transplant 2 from a living donor, which has been going for 13 years now. Both my donor and myself live a normal life and my blood tests are either normal or pretty close to it.
