Why is London full of 'ugly' buildings?

Throughout history, different architectural movements have come, gone and re-emerged. But one 20th century movement is perhaps the most contentious of them all. This style of building is simultaneously one of the most loved, and hated of all time.
Brutalism, when it first emerged, was a modern and optimistic style largely praised and appreciated by the public. But today, many of these buildings are seen as ugly, and associated with crime and antisocial behaviour.
So why do so many of these buildings have such a bad reputation? Is it deserved? Or are these buildings simply misunderstood?..

Visited last year the Barbican in London with a guided tour. I would happily live in one of the flats, love the whole ensemble with its green and quietness....

This is like saying "yeah, they were stupid, untalented, ugly and anti-human, but they were suuuch optimists" 😅 Embarassing. They are right on the fact that we need much more afordable housing.

I have to disagree with the points made. People hate Brutalist architecture not because of prejudice against minorities, but simply because it’s ugly. From Belfast, to Berlin, to Belgrade, the buildings are reviled by the vast majority of people because slabs of cheap concrete & harsh designs are ugly to the human eye. There’s a reason people sightsee in Rome while ignoring Tirana, Albania.

Your definition of 'ugly' is entirely culturally relative. There is no universal truth or beauty. In London, the Barbican is a tourist destination. The Alexandra & Ainsworth estate is frequently on TV as a backdrop for dramas and other fiction because of how interesting the architecture is. I won't say it's gorgeous. But it is very interesting and engaging.

I disagree. I don't hate Brutalist architecture, it is a certain style and often very comfortable to live in. As a German i am used to live in kind of Brutalist buildings, there too it solved years ago the housing problems of bigger cities and it really depends on maintaining how accepted the areas are today.

@@JackGladstoneHolroyde This is nonsense. There is absolutely such a thing as universal beauty. In all the world you will not find a single person who does not love a clear blue sky, is not touched by a sunset, is not calmed by the gentle tide of the sea. Meanwhile grey overcast days are universally loathed. Although buildings are somewhat different as we have not evolved to appreciate complex artificial structures there are still certain aesthetics which are universally more charming than others. Brutalism is without any doubt ugly

Not sure that the reason people go to Rome over TIrana is because they don't like brutalism. I think it's more to do with the history and famous landmarks.

So true! Ugly architecture is like a cancer growing across the Earth swallowing up cities I can't speak for any other country but I'm in the US and that's just the norm now but then again we never really did have beautiful architecture except in the very very beginning and they were just copying whatthey had had in Europe. But I am of the belief and others seem to feel the same way that ugly architecture is a sign of a sick society and it can actually cause people to feel depressed I know it does me
