Kens biggest pro is his diverse moveset that allows you to setup plays. Modern takes away some of that. The one button supers and DP doesn’t outweigh the lost moves.

IMO cr.lp is the most important move that Ken loses in Modern (you can get cr.lp with consecutive down Ls, but cr.lk always comes out first). Losing cr.mp isn’t as big of a deal since it’s mostly only used in combos and not in neutral/wake-up. If Modern Ken had access to cr.lp I think it’d be on par with Classic. The other moves he loses aren’t that important.

man honestly sometimes I don't appreciate how much of an absolute goat Justin is, that JP is 1700 mmr, aka pretty solid player, my guy didn't even let him play he was just styling on him.

He did only raw dr out of corner and spammed reversal or tech, definitely not solid. 1250mmr Ryu player = ~1800mmr JP player. Character *hard* carries.

Justin is amazing, but taking the execution needed out of reacting to something makes it infinitely easier to do so. My 10 year old reacts to everything while playing Modern, because part of his reaction doesn't have to include entering a difficult input he has a chance to mess up and get hit for trying. It makes highlights of people stuffing things with Modern not that impressive, and it makes me wonder if drive rush is designed around people playing Modern being able to stuff it with one button DPs and Supers.

I main modern Ken only at a low masters level cuz I barely play ranked. But I actually think hes super ez on modern. His med auto combo basically branches into every combo you need. He has heavy dragonlash for cheese and med jinrai kicks for more cheese to ppl that don’t know what to do. Corner damage and carry is still Ken. The only thing I wish he had was crouch light punch without having to crouch light kick first just bc I think I would be able to check things better with it. Crouch med punch would be nice but that’s for just different combos. Jumping heavy kick would also be nice. But modern Ken has allowed me to enjoy my first real SF game

Has Justin ever gone over his preferred layout/input device for modern? I enjoy classic on a leverless and modern on a pad, but haven’t been able to find a comfy modern layout not on pad.

I haven’t personally seen Justin go over his layout, and I’d be interested to know. But I like Haitani’s layout: L-M-H-Parry Assist-Special-Super-DI I swap DI and Parry, because I’m used to it, even if it’s less optimal.

Ken is worse on Modern because Ken actually has to play the game and use everything in his kit. Modern benefits characters that can just mash brainlessly and abuse 2-3 cheap things endlessly.
