Why is Mustard Oil Banned in US & Europe?

Sometimes, blind faith in poorly done science with questionable economic interests might not be a good idea. The ban on Mustard oil is a great example. On the basis of some animal studies in the 1970s, US & EU have banned mustard oil for sale as a cooking oil because it contains high amounts of erucic acid, and instead what you can buy is the closely related genetically modified cousin - Canola, which is made from rapeseed, a close cousin of the mustard.
Fun fact: The same Erucic acid has shown promise in improving Insulin resistance in mice - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...

Rape seed oil was introduced into our diet in 1982 or so ... It contains a VERY unfavourable combination of constituents so that humans go undernourished by it. A couple of weeks ago I trotted to an indian grocery store (in London, 🇬🇧) to buy some mustard oil and all the brands stated for external use only that I became confused and walked out of the store without the oil. Thank you for this gem of a video, much needed for us Indians to dispel many oil myths. Could I please request you to also make an episode on the Great Olive Oil Scam as well? @sonuchauhan-ne3cj 2 месяца назад
Olive oil is healthy and coconut oil is bad for your heart at it is mostly saturated fat, the unhealthy kind of fat.
@gautamv952
@gautamv952 2 месяца назад
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Unfortunately, this is just another myth perpetuated by corporate gimmickry. The largest producers of Olive oil are the US and some European countries. India, as we all know, is a big market up for grabs. However, Indians have been using traditional/indigenous oils such as coconut, til and mustard, for centuries! The ONLY way in which Olive oil could displace traditional oils was to concoct medical data that declared the latter as unhealthy. Which fabrication was then fed to us, and which we happily swallowed. Thus began the use of Olive oil in India in the early 2000s. Hilariously, in the mid 2010s, coconut oil suddenly gained popularity in countries like the US and UK as a healthy oil! Today, it is very popular among health-conscious Brits in particular. This is neo-capitalism at its worst.
@gautamv952
@gautamv952 2 месяца назад
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Wow, my earlier reply got auto-deleted! Apparently, YT will not tolerate statements against countries. So I'll just list three carefully-worded points: 1. Coconut oil is now being promoted by countries like the US and the UK as a healthy oil. 2. Coconut oil and other indigenous oils such as mustard oil, have been used in India for centuries, and there is little evidence to link them to heart disease. Same goes for ghee, which was also declared unhealthy by various medical reports. 3. The biggest producers of Olive oil are countries like the US and some European countries. India is a big fecund market for corporates. Need I say more?
@gautamv952
@gautamv952 2 месяца назад
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Not really. Coconut oil is now being promoted as a very healthy oil, especially in the West. Coconut oil, and others indigenous oils such as mustard oil, have been used in India for centuries, and there is little to no evidence to link them to heart disease. Same goes for ghee. All of these indigenous cooking mediums were subjected to a lot of flak in the early 2000s, so there were definitely a few axes to grind there.
@sonuchauhan-ne3cj
@sonuchauhan-ne3cj 2 месяца назад
@@gautamv952 I never even heard of Coconut oil being promoted as healthy. I have read many nutrition & health related books all written by western authors, none of them call coconut oil or ghee as healthy. Saturated fat being unhealthy is very well known thing. Ghee and coconut are both saturated fat. Saturated fats tends to stay solid at room temperature. That's the easy trick which work mostly. Only people who call saturated fat healthy are carnivorour, low carb keto fanatics. But there whole thing is pseudo science. Mustard oil is healthy and very similar to olive oil. I haven't seen any reason to believe it's unhealthy.

It is so frustrating that people make this far reaching laws without basing it on good research. My daughter has a soy allergy. Because if a study with a whopping 300-ish people show that soybean oil didn’t cause a reaction in those 300 soy allergic individuals, products with soybean oil don’t have to be labeled as containing an allergen. However, it’s only the highly refined soybean oil that doesn’t cause the reaction for one, and for two, it’s not even accurate. There was a petition with over 300 people who had soy allergies asking for it to be labeled as an allergen as they had reactions to the soybean oil. My daughter also has a reaction to the oil, though less than with soybean protein or lecithin. Meanwhile, trying to find mustard oil here in the states is difficult, but when we live in Bangladesh, I along with millions of other people use it regularly. So silly.

nope. pomace is the 3rd grade olive oil after evoo and light olive oil. and it has a very high omega 6 to 3 ratio and causes inflammation from long term use. mustard, sesame, peanut have better omega 3:6 ratio. can use these oils for different foods as the recipe demands. coconut oil has the highest saturated fat content, even more than pig fat. so you that sparingly. you can get all this info from omega 3:6 ratio and saturated fatty acid component charts from google

The problem with seed oils has always been the production process, rather than the source. Cold pressed sesame seed oil for instance, is an exceptionally nutritious (and historic) oil. The same seed, when refined and processed, produces toxic, easily oxidisable, rancid fat.

This is so interesting and I want to run out and buy a bottle of mustard oil. A couple of questions first. 1. What is the pesticide load on mustard seed oil from India? I do not think that there are any organic brands, at least in the USA 2. What is the shelf-life? That is, does it go rancid as readily as some light oils, like sesame or sunflower do? 3. If it does go rancid, is the rancid smell obvious over the inherent strong smell? Thank you. Fascinating video.

yes used to think the same from the same anecdotes that were told. but mustard oil has got the much better omega 3:6 ratio for heart health and inflammation compared to olive oil. and the seed oils have generally lower saturated fats and cholesterol compared to butter/ghee, coconut oil, tallow and lard also cholesterol levels. use them sparingly for certain recipes but use the bad reputation seed oils the most for its nutritional value. whole fam noticed a change for the better after looking into the nutritional value of the omega 3:6, saturated, mufa & pufa value, cholesterol values from charts and labels and using them as as desired for the recipe with keeping healthy nutrition profile and portion size of food being cooked for the entire family.
