Another big one is where the air enters the cowl through that almost square box on the top passenger side. That foam is a gasket which mates with a riser that protrudes through into the cowl. That foam deteriorates and water that enters the drivers end of the cowl, and washes over to the passenger side, can drop down into that opening. Actually, it's probably getting sucked in if your blower fan is on. (I have to wonder if the blower motor getting water in it isn't part of the cause of my melting ignition harness accessory wires and blower switch plugs.) If you've ever seen little pieces of foam coming out of your vents, this "gasket" is one of the places it is coming from. There are a couple of decent fix videos here on RU-vid, where they cut into the cowl under the plastic cover on top and caulk around that riser. Seems to work. I'm going to do a THOR cowl induction and try to seal mine up through the hole I have to cut for the air filter. Good video.

OUTstanding video! Great break down of the entire heating and cooling unit, with the take apart and demonstration. I just bought a '97 wrangler and the passenger side footwell was soppy wet this morning. My engine bay is plenty dirty and the water is clean, so not the heater core but likely blocked condensation opening. Great work. Thanks!

I had clear water dripping from underneath the dash. I did as you suggested and stuck a screwdriver in the drain hose to clear it. Eureka!!! There had to be a half gallon of water come out. Your suggestion worked perfectly!Thank you for this video!

This is a really good video, covering a lot of different problems. I would get a puddle of water where the passenger in the backseat would put their feet, every time it would rain. Apparently it was coming through the vent that was under the passenger front seat.

this video just reminded me i need to fix one of my jeeps, we took off for fla in july, got about half way there and the passengers side floor started looking like lake erie, pulled over, couldnt find the hose anywhere, talk about a long hot ride through fla, georgia and sc in the midst of summer.

Mine was due to missing the radio antenna grommet! Hard to find but relieved it wasn't much work to replace.

A lot of people uses an air hose to blow the lines out also. I've had to do it on a ladies 2014 camry, it kept soaking her passenger floorboard. Sprayer seemed to clear the lines out and it fixed her issues. I tried the coat hanger as well but couldn't get a real good angle with it under her car.

no clue why jeep thought it would be a good idea to put the ZJ's a/c drain in the frame rail... pain right in the ass. fixed now, thanks to RTV and the top of a water bottle 😂🤘

ZJs have a problem like this but the tube on the Condesation drain either falls off or the factory doesn't put one on. There is a video or forums available on cutting a hole into the wheel well because unlike the XJs that have an easy access the ZJs is between the wheel well and the firewall. A 1inch by 2 inch cut or 2x3 for easier work is needed. Then you place a new hose over the end and/or seal up the hole in the firewall so it can't run back into the cab.

I have a 2000 Cherokee. The passenger floorboard would fill up in a good rain over night. Found it was coming in around the heater blower. Water ran down the windshield past the hood seal along a drip edge and dripped onto the blower motor, ran down the inside of the firewall and would fill the floorboard up. I did some water division tricks. Seems to have taken care of it. If I ever have to pull the air box I'll reseal it.

Not every scenario although I thought mine was windshield. Front floors are rusty with pin holes in it and a large hole I found when I pulled the carpet. So here in Florida it rains torrentially. I went out twice in the spring to two inches of standing water in the floor. Well finally took the hose and on the drivers side, let it run in the vent where the wipers are. Water started coming in and I was able to locate the issue. Some of the water was running inside the engine bay on the firewall and into the grommet where the hood latch is. RTV Silicone on the inside, let it cure for 10 min and plugged it back in, and on the outside a ring of silicone RTV around the hole and good to go... a 12 hour rain later and no more water... now fixing floorboard.

I got a tube from lowes and strung it down so the water could not come back onto the passenger side from the dry rotted seal that went through the fire wall. That prolly would have fixed it. But I also cut out the foam seal and used a silicon adhesive sealant to seal up the firewall. Hopefully cutting out that old seal was a good idea because I feel like I could have just left it and used less sealant to make it a good seal

Huge fan of your videos, very helpful. I have 97 jeep cherokee and for years the passenger side leaks when it rains. I want to replace the whole hvac unit for a new one with new gaskets but I can't find the unit for 97 -01. All I see is the units from 84 -96 . Do you know where I can buy a new 97 hvac box?

i have 2 97's and they leak under the heater box from where theres sum foam strip when it rains or carwash it must come in the cowl then the box

on my 2000 JGC, it's the door seal leaking. It would be a big mess if I were to take this big box out. Before doing this, look else where first.

my jeep leaks on passenger side and drivers side, however; i noticed when it was parked overnight in the rain went into it there was a lot on drivers side i already found that the window seal leaks... still searching for other shit

Hi! I hear a gurgling noise of water under my dashboard on my 2014 ram 1500 when I turn on my A/C and also when I Have the heater on. I hear like a small water rushing or boiling BUT no water anywhere showing leaking. What do you think it is?

I do have a question I couldnt find an answer to. I know on my 97 xj the AC humidity vent hose runs in the frame and I may need to clean mine out. Is there a place to drill a hole to stick wire in there? or know another way of fixing short of taking out the heater core unit?

Hmm well sure does seem to be my heater core is leaking, as i'm having green coolant on my passenger floorboard, which in the long run shouldn't had surprised me as I had to replace the radiator in the jeep the first 2 months

I have a ZJ and it is indeed from when AC is on. I have a ZJ unfortunately and so the tube through the firewall is blocked. Is there way to just create a better seal on the passenger side floorboard?

Mine are at on both front drives and passengers keep getting wet. No reason in pass week. I have floor mats down. I went to clean my jeep lifted the mats and rugs are wet. Not soaked.

I just brought in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport for horrible leaking from there and it turns out that the HEATER CORE BOX WHICH IS PLASTIC IS CRACKED and they can't find another one so I am basically screwed. They wanted to "patch" it but how long is that going to last and it would cost almost $400 just to patch!!! It only has 103,000 and now I can't drive it b/c my floorboard was soaked under the rug and I'm not putting up with it no more....too many problems and I don't drive it but maybe 10 miles a week!!! Sick of it. So it's sitting covered until I can fix my garage door and store it until I can get rid of it!!!

Okay so what I’m hearing here & from other videos is that if it is the drain that’s the problem then the water will be on the passengers side correct?!!? My water is on the driverside. I thought it may be this very problem but after watching a few vids I’m thinking it might be something else. It’s been raining a lot the past couple of weeks here in NYC. My carpet insert isn’t wet, but under it on the floorboard is wet like someone spilled a cup of water.

I have had TWO different types of leaks. 1-was the heater core and replacing it SUCKS! Luckily I didn't have to take the whole box out just part way out and it still is super annoying and then I had to get the line vacuumed to get the air bubbles. 2- was the AC condensation drain which water would run out the straight tube and right back into the cab because some idiot decided that open cell foam was good choice to seal it. That was an easy fix and super cheap fix once you drill out a little hole in the wheel well to get to the drain.

Hey, not sure if you got my last comment; I was logged into the wrong account when I originally posted. I was wondering if you knew what the name for the door/vent that you described to function as a recirculation door/vent of some sort. I accidentally broke the plastic lever that hooks up the small motor to it, & I haven't found anything on what it is called or where to get a new one. I'm starting to think I may have to try my luck at a junk yard, which means pulling some more HVAC boxes lol yaayyyyy 🤯

can my evaporation core be leaking freon? I have an 02 wrangler tj and I can't find the freon leak. I added dye to the ac system and I can't find the leak. I was told the leak can be the evaporation core or the heater core. what do you think?

Still tracking this problem on my 2001 xj. After hours of trying to locate the leak I’ve determined a few things: it’s obviously from rain, it leaks down the heater box onto the passenger floor, and I’m almost fucking certain its leaking thru the seal around air intake under the cowl, but that is unreachable. I’m replacing my wiper bushings soon so while that is out I’m going to see if I can reach the air intake under the cowl and silicone seal around that, and if that doesn’t work I might just say fuck it lol...

I have a 2003 wrangler. Every time it rained water would leak into the passenger side. It would be one to two inches deep. I found that the problem was caused by a clogged drain under the cowl (the panel below the windshield). There is a drain in the tray below the cowl that drains water from the tray to the outside under the car behind the motor. Also under the cowl is the air inlet box for the fan. So when that drain gets plugged, water fills up in the tray and enters the fan air inlet and drains onto the passenger side floor. The fix is to remove the cowl (about seven screws) and clean the tray and drain with a shopvac. Flush with water. If the drain is still plugged, run a stiff wire down the drain line while flushing with a garden hose. Easy. Remove the rubber hood seal in order to reseat the cowl back in place. Then push the seal back in place.
