The reason why Tesla's can't go that fast is because the motor doesn't have more than one speed. The limit is actually the motor not being able to go any faster (like redlining an electric motor). The 155 mph limit is imposed to prevent damage to both the battery and the motor (usually when going down hill). Source: I work at Tesla

AC off, suspension very low, make sure battery is cool. In-between runs put the suspension on very high so there’s maximum venting capabilities from the battery pack. Then back to very low for the run. Also make sure range mode is off and have the highest charge possible.

So the 155 mph/ 250 kph speed limit is due to the motor limitation. Tesla wanted you to get the maximum acceleration with a top speed that matches with the top speed of other cars( Audi,Bmw etc). A electric motor has a rpm limit, exceeding this limit and you will damage the motor or other parts. As you know EV have one gear because they don‘t need more than that (efficiency of the motor). Tesla put the gear ratio to match the top speed while being on the motor‘s healthy limit. That‘s why a Tesla accelerates that quickly but can‘t pull that fast to it‘s top speed. In Formel E there are race cars with 1 gear but also some with 2 gears. The reason they got 2 gears is that they reach their maximum efficiency faster. But you don‘t need that in your everyday driver, do you? Greetings from switzerland.

Tips for next time: 1. Fill up those tires with extra pressure (2 psi above the normal will do) 2. Be sure to arrive at the event with battery power above 85% 3. Kick any guy from the passenger's seat.

It's so funny to watch this as a german. Our average speed at the Autobahn is 200 km/h (125mp/h)

At 6:05 you can see in the power meter a yellow dotted line and an exclamation point indicating a power limit caused by overheating of the drive train ( battery, motors) so that's why the acceleration after 130 mph was limited. It is also because it's an 100D and not a P100D w/ the performance motors. And last the top speed is limited to 155m mph because the motors have a single gear and at top speed they are spinning at max RPMs ~16k.

When a battery is drained, even partially, it's voltage goes down. Voltage is "pressure" that the battery can put out. Even at 80%, that's voltage lost. Your best bet would be to have the car at 100% and start. Think about it... if you walk 5 miles and then someone asks you to race, your going to be slower than if you rested before hand. Another... when you use a dremel, a battery operated one, you can tell the battery is dying because it doesn't have enough power or "pressure" to exert to push electrons through the wires, causing it to loose performance. It's a downside to electric cars, but one of the only ones😂. Thanks for all your videos. Hope that helps

The X model has 3 modes 1.Normal 2.Sport and 3. Ludicrous mode. If you really want to go with 155mph you need to set ludicrous mode (ludicrous mode gives full power and lesser battery life to your car that heats it up very quickly).

Btw if you do this in 2020 bring your roadster

I remember you saying that there's software that blocks it from going above 155. So my theory is that once you get past 130, the software starts to partially act up.

Charge the vehicle to full. Makes a major difference. Also A motor can only spin at such a high RPM (multiple times higher than gas) for so long before it toasts itself... 155 is to protect the motor.

the car will limit you based on the location and speed limit on the road (the hack to go top speed on a Tesla is plug in a car monitoring system to the data port, and clear the speed limitation code)

Electric horsepower is calculated by multiplying voltage x amps when your battery is 50% charge the voltage of the battery drops,which the means lower horsepower than expected! For example 100% charged is 400v X 1400 amps = 560 KW of electric horsepower Lets say the battery has 50 % charge then is 355v X 1400 amps = 497 KW of electric horsepower Charge it to 100% then see how big of a difference it makes 👍

There are limitations of the motors for longevity of the motors life cycle and batteries that is why it is limited you may be able mod these but depending on what i.e. software running gear ratio ect

You only got to 140 because your battery is not full. The car limits the current draw because the battery can't provide it. You can see the limit by the dashed line in the power consumption gauge.

You need to fully charge to car in order to go faster and reach the top speed. I drove our Tesla on the autobahn with a full battery and it had no problem getting there!

I watched one trying to do this on the German autobahn and the battery was limiting because of heat. Its protection battery management software and sensors at work. Good job Tesla! Protect customers investment. These vehicles are not high speed race cars.

Having driven a P100d I noticed that the performance gets pretty weak above 110mph. Until Tesla introduce a second gear you are going to be off of the torque curve at the higher RPM. Very quick to 110 though. The Roadster 2 will solve that problem with a second gear for high speed torque. Sorry Elon but the model S is not for everyone just yet.

The creators probably programmed it to not go over a certain speed limit to prevent car crashes or any damage to the vehicle. Maybe it would over heat the engine while running it at that speed.

So it depends on the Life and Ownership even Suspension and Acceleration. It is a factor you need to include.

i had a 4 litre supercharged Jaguar pushing out 500 horse power and got 155 out of it a couple of times. I got rid of it about fifteen years ago before it got rid of me! Just too powerful. It was a rocketship, said at the time to be the fastest production four door fiver seater in the world
