Thanks for the very informative video. I recently purchased a used Horse tiller and found myself getting pulled by it just as you described. I thought it might have been a problem with the governor, but upon using it a few times, I realized that it was due to having the tine depth set on the deepest setting. Once I adjusted the depth setting to a shallower setting I was able to control it. I also have a Troybilt Bronco which is a CRT (counter rotating tines) model and I don't have this problem because the counter rotation of the tines counters the direction of travel, so to speak.

Good advice for rear tine tillers, i remember when my dad bought our Troybilt almost 50 years ago and the rock hard clay in our yard had him digging his heels in and dragging him across the yard which i though was hilarious but in reality he needed some advice like you just gave. He just couldn't believe how the old people on the ads were running them with "just one hand"😅 Eventually he did figure it out.

Thanks for sharing that memory. I think many a man has experienced something very similar😳

My son has my dad's 50 +/- year old troy built horse. It has 8 hp kohler engine w/electric start. The pto will not engage the tines. It appears to need 2 belts, but I'm not sure this is the case. Do you know what might be wrong with it? Can't find anyone to work on it. We're in NW metro Atlanta. Thanks!

I’m guessing you’re missing a belt if there is none. The belt can then be moved forward or backward to affect tune speed is relation to wheel speed. Hope that helps!

@@therustichandyman Thanks for the reply. Easier to study this at home on my desktop computer with a larger screen. It's clear to me that the pullies and the belt are not the problem. This video clears that up for me. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CvvbMxZX_vs.html. The issue is that the PTO clutch lever is loose and will not engage the clutch. I watched another video on how to service this, but when my son and I tried to move the clutch, we couldn't. We started the engine while viewing the clutch (with the tines removed), and it wasn't moving. So it could be that we just do not know how to service the clutch without removing the transmission housing and going inside, much like you did when you were servicing your tiller. But I don't feel that I/we are competent and capable of doing this ... AND ... we cannot find anyone in the Metro Atlanta area that wants to work on this tiller! Hence our dilema. Any thoughts for us? Thanks again for your help. If it wasn't for RU-vid videos like yours, I'd be lost trying to do the things I'd like to do. My son also has a retired deep well that I'd like to check out and restore. I had a friend who is in the well business look at it, and to completely restore the pump, wiring, etc. and to replace the well house with a new, more modern looking cover (it is 25 ft. from what is now a 35 MPH through street) , the cost is around 10k. Too much for budgets :). Thanks again, john

@@therustichandyman One more quick question ... I think I remember that the tines will engage, even with the tiller in the neutral speed position (not moving forward or in reverse), right? If the tiller has to be moving for the pto to engage the tines, then I may need to put it up on blocks to get the wheels off the ground and have another look. Or walk it up and down the driveway while looking at the PTO.

@@johnbassett9415 the tines will turn even if the wheels are not in gear.
