Oscar Piastri has been setting the junior formula circuit alight, winning the Formula Renault Eurocup and the FIA Formula 3 Championship. As of now, he currently leads the FIA Formula 2 Championship...and yet, he's not in discussions regarding a Formula 1 seat....why?

If you win an F2 title in your first year, regardless of the tam, that’s a huge accomplishment. Only drivers to do it are Hamilton Rosberg Hulkenberg Russell and Leclerc

The fact that Piastri could win the F3 and F2 titles consecutively in his rookie seasons and not be in F1 next year is crazy. The last 2 drivers to win the F3/GP3 title then the F2 title consecutively in their rookie seasons... well, one is driving for Ferrari (Leclerc) and the other will be driving for Mercedes next year (Russell)

The onus is on Alpine here, though. Piastri's done everything right, except for the lack of funding. If he had an in-demand nationality (Chinese, American, or Indian) he'd definitely be in the running for an F1 seat. All the same, it's not like Zhou is a bad driver. If he wins F2 this year he'd arguably be better than Latifi was, when he got his F1 seat.

Alonso will give Alpine publicity for being a two time world champion, provide valuable experience, again, for being a two time world champion. And it’s not like that he’s super slow behind the wheels or anything like that. His fight with with LH is arguably the biggest highlight of the season so far. So why the fuck would alpine replace him?

The only major australian firms with interests outside oz that I can think of are involved in mining/natural resources, hardly something that makes sense to advertise to the (mostly European) public. It’s a shame, really. But like it or not, F1 has never been a fair sport - and I highly doubt that’ll change. Or to put it another way - I’d love to have Piastri on the grid. But he can’t change the biggest thing holding him back (funding), and he made the “mistake” of signing with Alpine (who simply don’t have a junior team to send him to). With all that in mind, I think Zhou’s about as close as you’ll get to the ideal ‘pay driver’ scenario. Oh well.

Wouldn't be the first. Gasly won the last GP2 title and was sent in Super Formula. There are 2 or 3 seats taken by drivers simply not good enough, and only 10 teams when 11 or 12 would be better. I hope Alpine do something for Piastri. I mean, I want Pourchaire to reach F1 ASAP as a french, but Piastri looks damn good.

F1 without money is called sim racing. Even karting essentially requires your parents to be millionares these days (if you want to be competitive that is--new chassis and engine each session, fresh tires, etc.).

If Zhou gets the Alfa seat (which given how much money is involved seems more and more likely), they really should give Piastri the reserve/development driver role for Alpine at the very least and maybe some practice sessions. Dude has shown more than enough so far to be involved in F1 next year in a somewhat permanent role. Hope to see him in a seat for 2023!

@@juliantaffa4089 100% agree regarding Piastri, I feel like he's come into the junior Formulas and more or less just bossed it from his first year in each series. Similar to Russell I think actually. Just a shame there doesn't seem to be as many free seats in F1 compared to when Russell and co came in.

Gasly and Renault will happen 2023 after Alonso moves on. Liam Lawson I doubt will have the points for a superlicense and Vips is getting his butt kicked by another 6 guys at the moment in f2, how would he go in f1 and is inconsistent anyway. Daruvala probably still wont have enough super license points and will be in his mid 20's by then anyway. They'll have to go looking else where and why not get the guy who won f2 and f3 in both his rookie years. Sounds pretty reasonable if you ask me

@@mrsocko9077 Ocon may be undroppable. We don't know what out clauses are built into his contract he just signed with Alpine that keeps him there though 2024. Most contracts do not include termination for convenience but rather clauses based on things like performance. The likely can't just kick him out if he's meeting his performance goals because they'd rather have Piastri.

@@boostav Yea but f1 teams are expensive to run, and you don't just get into F1 by being shit. Stroll, Latifi and Mazepin did win races in junior formulas. Stroll even dominated F3 at one point. All drivers have big sponsors backing them. Sainz has Estrella. Kemppi Oy sponsors Bottas. Perez has Mexico's largest insurance company backing him up. All drivers have sponsors, they all need to bring money into the team, Even Hamilton has sponsors - Grand Turismo. Part of the reason he got the McLaren seat was because he had Vodaphone backing him. If Piastri wants an F1 seat, he needs to start looking for sponsors. He has a few like Melbourne Malibu and flash diesel already. He's come good at the wrong point in his career. At best he'll be Alpine's reserve driver next season, which wouldn't be the end of his F1 journey. Alonso himself was a reserve driver at Renault

@@shockwave.studios It's true but giovi here in Italy is getting a lot of clout because he's been driving incredibly well under the pressure of losing the seat, and we all know that it's likely not enough to keep him in the sport. It's a very contrasting feeling that is making us very attached to him. Tifosi at Ferrari will always stay , but we will be hurt. Also I think he meant "italian drivers" in F1, there is no upcoming talent from Italy and hasnt been in the recent years

Still not enough teams I don’t think. Alpine have nowhere to send these guys. If Oscar win F2 this year, he can’t stay there for next season. So where is he meant to go? If you’re Alpine, you ideally want both Zhou and Piastri in F1.

First reason: For 2022 season with regulation changes, teams value already having experience in F1 much more than in normal seasons. Second reason: Alpine seems to don't care about finding seats for their juniors (Zhou is in rumours because of Chinese sponsors)

It's a bummer Logan didn't get an f2 seat this year. Seeing him, Theo, and Oscar go up against each other in f2 this year would've been great. Hopefully next year if Theo and Oscar are there he will finally get a chance. Renault’s hard on for Alonso is unbelievable. Ocon is finally starting to come back on. Regardless, I find it wild that they have junior racers all over the place but can’t seem to get them in an F1 seat… Then we have three drivers who have daddy’s buying teams or massive shares in the team to guarantee their place on the grid 🙄

Renault/Alpine are just extremely poorly run. They gobble up junior drivers but have absolutely 0 relationships in F1 that they could use to push a junior driver into a seat on a lower team. No one wants to use their shitbox engines anymore because they're awful, so it's basically Alpine vs. the world. THAT is why he's not going to be in F1 in 2022, and he might not even in 2023 if Alonso doesn't retire again.

I get what you’re saying, it’s a challenge jumping from F2 to F1, but you’ve got to take the plunge at some point if you’re in his shoes. IMO he’s shown he’s good enough, the best guys out there are able to adapt quickly, sticking around in F2 is only going to hurt your momentum.

I think the problem is that junior series credentials don't mean jack sh*t when it comes to Formula One - you only need to be at the right place at the right time similar to guys like Rosberg, Hamilton, Leclerc and Russell. I'd point out 2 examples of drivers dominating in the lower categories, but were either OK at best or flops at worst - Nico Hülkenberg and Stoffel Vandoorne. In Hülkenberg's case it was more of a bad luck and timing, but he'll forever be known as the driver with the most starts without a single podium. Whereas Vandoorne will be considered as one of the biggest busts F1 has seen. He was the 2015 GP2 champion and performed decently in the Super Formula Championship in Japan, but his shortlived F1 adventure will be remembered for all the wrong reasons casting a shadow over his junior achievements. Granted, he was up against a 2-time champion as a teammate, but when a then 36-37 y.o. Fernando Alonso is kicking your a$$ decisively in the same machinery, people will point the finger at you even if it's not your fault. While he's resotring his stock in Formula E, he was way off his teammate Nyck de Vries. And speaking of de Vries - for all intents and purposes his chances of landing a seat are slim to none. Because no one looked at him when he won F2 in 2019, in his 3rd year, in one of the weakest grids with only competition comming from other F2 veterans (Nicolas Latifi, Luca Ghiotto and Sérgio Sette Câmara). Simply put if you don't win the F2 title within your first 2 years, you have no chance unless you throw a sh*tload of money.

Zhou doesn't deserve a seat in F1 comparing his carreer with other drivers like Piastri, taking into account the fact that this is the third year of Zhou in F2 and this is the FIRST time he is fighting for the championship, while during his THREE YEARS in F3 the best championship position he achieved was 8th with only 2 wins in THREEEE YEARS, same as Piastri in only one year. But paraphrasing mr Russell, "Money is key"

No offence to Albon, but he had his chance as well. His Toro Rosso performances were overhyped, and although he showed true glimpses of talent in the Redbull seat, he ultimately failed badly. I don’t quite get the love affair with making sure he found a spot back on the grid when every single F2 driver except money bags Zhou does not have a chance of making it.

Because he his Australian and not European and does not have billionaire parents, these remain the two key requirements post 2010. Same applies to Kiwis and most South Americans these days unless their name is that of a former world champion or they fit criteria B having Billionaire parents. F1 is not about talent it is about money and connections. Liberty Media is committed to making F1 a European / American thing. Moving F1 back by over an hour and now these sprint races mean F1 is no longer a sport that can be watched on the East Coast of Australia. Lets hope that hour is worth it to people who don't watch F1 in California. I like most Australians watch the 5 min highlights next day sitting up to near 1am on a Sunday night to see the end of a GP is not feasible. Bring Back Bernie please, he cared more about current fans than Hypothetical fans that may watch more if the GP is an hour later in the USA.

Tbh, i dont think it's the worst thing. Zhou's linked to alfa which lets face it, isnt exactly an amazing team on the grid. Bare in mind that zhou is also an alpine academy driver, meaning that piastri would have one less driver to compete with. Alonso is bound to reitre soon, perhaps at the end of next year, freeing up a seat at alpine. ...which talent could possibly replace fernando alo... oh wait, that's right. Theres a guy who has won f3 and f2 in consecutive years without a drive. And he's in our academy!! Basically what im saying is zhou going to alfa makes it a heck of a lot easier for piastri to get the alpine seat if alonso retires at the end of next season. And as far as financial backing? Pretty sure alpine will be saving a heck ton of money in wages by having an f2 champ, over a 2 time f1 wdc.

Piastri being fast but more importantly consistent in different Formulas, Constructors, and different tracks over the course of a season and winning championships as a result is a fantastic sign he's got what it takes to be a champion. Kimi won a world championship by being consistent. Alonso repeatedly dragged his inferior Ferrari into World Championship Fights that went down to the final race by being consistent. Jenson won his Title by being consistent in the 2nd half of the season when he no longer had the fastest car. Last year Max beat Lewis whilst in an inferior car by being consistent and Russel beat Hamilton this year by being consistent. It's the skill of a champion.

I think the main reasons are two: firstly, he isn't very well known for most of the fans since he just came to f2. And the second one, and that applies to us who know him, is the fact that he is an alpine junior and alpine has zero seats vacant for next year. and i don't see them putting him in a lower midfield team since they aren't exactly a top team. he definitely deserves it more than zhou imo tho

What Piastri is doing right now is like what leclerc and Russell did winning both F3 and F2 as rookies, only the elite talent can do it on the first year of trying.

This young man surely has the consistency that only the likes of Ocon, Hamilton, and Sainz have. The problem is, since 2017, F1 has been running only 10 teams. And one of them has a certain Nick Mazepin, who's only consistency is finishing at the back, while Piastri is a very consistent front-runner. *If Felipe Nasr had not only shat on himself and his supposed future employers Manor, he would still be racing alongside either Ocon or Wehrlein over there. Instead, he ended his own and Manor's careers, unintentionally disgracing the nation of Brazil, since Nasr actually had promising talent, while Felipe Massa, the only other Brazilian on the grid, was getting the olds. After Massa's final retirement in 2017, only one Brazilian raced in F1 ever since, who was Pietro Fittipaldi, who is unlikely to race in HAAS since there is Ferrari and Mazepin.* About Manor, had they survived after the 2016 season, there would be a higher chance for Piastri to get a seat in F1. Heck, maybe even some good amount of investment from Renault to keep the team afloat, as well as receiving the budget cap's benefits since there is actually a budget cap in F1 nowadays.
