00:00 Peccary Leather Introduction
You’ve probably heard of certain types of leather. With calfskin and suede being some of the most commonly used in the manufacture of leather goods and exotic skins such as crocodile or alligator leather commanding extremely high prices.
But there’s one type of leather that is becoming increasingly less common and therefore more expensive: Peccary leather.
01:00 What is Peccary Leather?
Peccary leather comes from the Peccary animal. They are a hoofed, pig-like mammals, reaching a medium size of about 35 to 52 inches in length when fully grown. Unlike cattle, the Peccary isn’t widely kept and bred for use in various industries like the meat trade. In order to protect from overhunting and harvesting, there are some extremely strict regulations about how and where Peccaries can be hunted.
02:13 How is Peccary Leather Made?
The first step is to harvest the skins either through the process of a scheduled hunt or through a hatchery center’s harvesting regimen. Next up, the skins are weighed to ensure even tanning. Drums are then used to tan the Peccary leather. After the skins have been tanned, they are then shaved down to an even thickness. When the skins are clean and hair free, they are left to dry. When the skins are dried, they are graded in numbers from I, II, III, and IV.
05:38 Qualities of Peccary Leather
Because Peccary leather commands high prices, it really pays to understand what you’re looking at, so you can spot the genuine article when shopping for Peccary goods: 1. Possibility of scars or blemishes
2. Distinct three-pronged pore structure that is visible throughout the skin
3. Matte finish.
4. Soft, supple feel
5. Durability
08:40 Best Uses for Peccary Leather
Peccary leather isn’t good for larger items or garments such as jackets or furniture pieces. Gloves are the number one use for Peccary leather. For decades, Peccary has been the undisputed king of glove leathers.
You’ll find small leather goods is usually where Peccary leather can be seen - wallets, watch straps, keyrings, business card cases, and the like are candidates for perfect Peccary uses, as they allow for single pieces to be cut from the Peccary hides without having to patchwork them together
09:10 Why Is Peccary Leather So Expensive?
The manufacture of Peccary leather is not only strictly regulated, but on an extremely small scale when compared to other leather manufacturers. Great care must be taken throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the best possible grade of the hide is achieved. Once the leather arrives with the leather goods maker, it requires a highly skilled craftsperson to create a beautiful product. And if you take care of your Peccary leather goods, you likely won’t have to replace them.

Channels like this educate the general public to appreciate the finer things. I remember asking myself why a Mercedes Benz and my wife pointed out the subtle differences in attention to detail. That appreciation is what separates the cream from the whole milk. Keep up the great work. 👌

Fascnating! They are cute little beasts! I would not want to be the one who has to skive all the Peccary skins! Great video. The Peccary leather looks like it has a fabulous hand feel (Lol!), but I just don't particularly care for the texture. What's wrong with me? I love buttery soft leather! Thank you gentlemen! Lisa

The are bred and farmed, like all mammals. ( As in terminology). Birds are bred and hatched from eggs and are still farmed. (as in terminology). Hatcheries only deal with eggs and chicks( ex, mass productions als chicken, turkey duck in Asia etc). I am the proud owner of a vintage pair of peccary gloves.

Thank you for the info! I picked up what I believe to be a skinny woman’s peccary belt at a thrift shop for $3 USD. I’m definitely smaller than the average adult man so it seems plausible there was a hide large enough for this piece. I think it has another layer of another leather, possibly napa. The 3 pore clusters are only on one surface of the belt but the belt is incredibly soft and supple. I compared it to the sheen and 3 pore pattern imitation peccary and one side is definitely peccary From what I can gather, not only is it difficult to make a belt because of the size of the hides but it seems like peccary is thin and while it has flexibility for something like gloves, it sounds like some thinner pieces would have too much flexibility for a belt. I also wanted to ask about shaving - does this mean that gloves are not full grain because they would be too thick?

You’ve heard the expression of course it fits like a glove. My question is what should a glove fit like? I have a pair of Peckary leather gloves, and I have smallish hands, which means that I often can’t find gloves which fit. Do gloves need to hug the contours of the hand to the point where they need to be peeled off? I feel like I have some room in the gloves. Do you think a leather worker could take them in like a piece of clothing? Lastly I was thinking about how I could make my gloves touchscreen friendly. Is there any way to accomplish this without compromising the glove?

We're working on a bunch of things but Covid hasn't made product development faster. Also, we don't just private label something from a catalog but truly design stuff , which takes more time. Stay tuned for some collar bars and socks in the next few days, but then more new product lines in the new year.

Much more biased than usual. Using the price of the gloves as an analogy for the price of the leather is disingenuous and misleading. The price per square foot could have been used here, but you chose not to do so. $30-60 for your average dress gloves is a funny statement, when your own store sells lambskin gloves for $170-190$, which is close to how much peccary gloves made in Peru for example would cost. The other $100-200 is the markup for convincing everyone that peccary is the best there is. A few years ago this business was transparent with how much your items cost and why, but now you are pulling wool over the eyes of newer inexperienced viewers, by cherry picking information to make your products look better than they are, both in quality and price.
@unconventionalideas5683

Well, also because it costs something to make it outside of Peru, because not everywhere has Peruvian Labor costs…

"$30-60 for your AVERAGE dress gloves is a funny statement, when your own store sells lambskin gloves for $170-190$". The Gentlemen's Gazette's gloves are nowhere near AVERAGE. "The other $100-200 is the markup for convincing everyone that peccary is the best there is." No - that markup is called a profit, without which The Gentlemen's Gazette would cease to exist.
@Aggnog

@@dandiehm8414 30-50% profit margin? Give me a break. The store might not be able to exist without the website, but the opposite is not true. If they didn't shill their own store in every video, they would just sponsor other items instead like every other channel. I have no moral qualm with them doing this, but the way they are doing it is exceedingly anti-consumer. In every video on other brands they complain about how their material sources or quality are not listed, and yet they do exactly the same thing.
