I don't understand the negativity in some of these comments. Nothing in this world is perfect, and people who know more about a subject can often distinguish subtleties that others can't. If you don't agree with the assessment, that's fine, but be polite. It's not ok to be nasty and tear the creators or their work down. RU-vid creators give huge amounts of time and effort to put up their content for us all. Especially during this horrible time, many are a much needed source of hope and cheer. Be grateful for the massive favour they're doing all of us.

Thank you for your thoughtful words here! I also want to add that I fully acknowledge in the video and here that I don't know everything and that there are things in any performance that are subjective. If we just rubber stamp something good or bad without really trying to understand it we miss the opportunity to earn. What I like and am looking for might be totally different than someone else. My hope is that by sharing my viewpoint as a professional opera director and voice teacher it might help others appreciate these awesome performers and not the other way around. My words are intended as an exploration as to what it is about a performance and performer that people love so much. It always makes me a bit sad to see responses come in that miss the main point of every reaction video of mine. That these performers have a lot to teach us. I get it that many people watch reaction videos because they love watching an emotional reaction where they get to enjoy watching someone love the same thing they love. I get that for those people I talk to much and probably don't gush enough. I purposefully put "reaction & analysis" because I make my videos for people who are interested in learning, seeing, or thinking something they hadn't before. Am I always successful in providing this. Probably not. But that is my hope. (Thanks Shiboline M'Ress for letting me tag onto your comment here - I thought I would pin it then thought I would add some of my own thoughts as well)

I want to respond to this seeing as my comment below might have been seen as "negative". I greatly appreciate all input that is constructive. As amazing as Bobby Hatfield was, he wasn't perfect, any any comment that has to do with singing techinique is very welcome. However, what I reacted to was criticism towards his body language being stiff and still, when he was only doing what he was told. Due to the limitation of the era, the lightning and the camera was set, and he had to stay within those parameters. That is not his fault nor something he can be critized for.

I actually like his lack of bodily drama, I found it almost enchanting or hypnotizing, along w that voice, that range, and those blue eyes. Most of the time, less is more, and it actually served to draw me in closer, personally

Bobby Hatfield range, his breathing control and the softness and loneliness of his voice. He didn’t over sing it, he didn’t do all kinds of distractions to move around around the floor. he just gave us a song that made love to the whole audience. Other performers can have the range and they can have the breathing but his voice is still just his voice made it a masterpiece.

Every time I listen to this “live” version and Bobby gets to the very end of the song, to that lip bite; I almost fall off my chair! lol. For a “real” woman, that is the ultimate “ icing on the cake!” He definitely makes me swoon! What a shame, that men today, don’t try to emulate, Bobby’s style; handsome, relaxed, cool but friendly with that killer smile. To say nothing about his sexy jaw and chiseled profile, Mmmmm mmm!!!

I'm going on 75 and Bobby Hatfield singing this unbearably romantic song, gives me the chills ... no matter how many times I see it. Everything about it, his voice, the words, the orchestra, perfection! I think he even draws men into the dream, and some of them feel they have to mask their feelings by criticising or joking about him, Ken doll remarks, etc. Although I'd have liked the chance to hear both the boys harmonising on it, Thunder and Silk, as a duo they were unmatched in their prime.

My parents were at the Andy William's valentines day show. In fact my mother was sitting next to Bobby's mother. He was nervous because this was the first time his parents were in the audience. As I respect your opinion, it's just that, your opinion. Bobby nailed this performance there is no doubt. Everyone sings differently, there is no right or wrong way. Many people sang this song before him, and many have sang it after him. No one has even come close to nailing this song as only Bobby can. Maybe you need to be reminded that in 1965, they didn't need to have back up dancers, flashing lights, auto tuners,, and bells and whistles. All they needed was pure talent, and Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield had it.

Absolute perfection. Bobby was a natural who had a soulful delivery and an awesome range. This live performance is a beautiful legacy for him. Bobby was only 25 years old and suffered from stage fright. He was also singing full voice in front of his mother for the first time. You can see a little frown toward the middle but he knew that he nailed it! Watch his expression at the end. Beautiful!

I absolutely loved this performance and have watched every reaction video I could find for two weeks. Loved that he is just standing there letting us experience all the feelings these beautiful words express through his beautiful voice. I can’t imagine a more perfect performance, and I am sad that I was only one at the time and missed it. Doesn’t hurt that he is beautiful also. As one guy’s reaction was..he is a freaking Ken doll! The fact that young adults everywhere are blown away decades later is a testament to not only the song but his voice and performance as well. Grown women are actually crying. Maybe because you had heard it before and was just looking to critique you missed what was awe inspiring.

I was 19 years old when the Righteous Brothers' rendition of Unchained Melody was produced. At age 74 many years later, it warms my ❤️ heart that so many young people are blown away by the high quality of this performance. I understand that you are a vocal coach sir, but back in the day, there wasn't a great deal of movement on the stage, as in an opera. I truly believe that these young people are drawn in by the fact that Bobby's voice is not only incredibly beautiful, but his performance was live, without any of today's technological bells and whistles, sound effects, background dancers dancing and prancing all over the stage with the lead singer. The lyrics and the singer pulls them into a romantic state without any vulgarity. The song is a reflection of a gentler time.

He never saw or heard such beauty and control, and that was the first time I he'd ever heard of a "counter-tenor." That night, listening and watching, I fell in love for the first time at 23. I'm gonna tell you I've been around as long as the song has And I've been listening to it since I've understood English and this song was released in Golden release from Bobby 1965 I've been around a little longer than that A couple of years. I can tell youThis is a perfect performance , now a vocal coach may say it's not perfect but to me it is absolutely Angelic perfect perfection. Awesome incredible magical wow And it always has been. I will have to disagree with you there, sir. Due to the sign of the times, the camera and lighting was fixed so that he was not allowed to move anywhere besides his spot. But, in my opinion, he delivered the most effortless and skillfull performance imagineable. Frankly, I can not think of a single artist today that could stay in one spot, without back-up singers, auto-tune or dance moves, delivering a performance of such high standard that it would be impressive, memorable and discussed fifty years from now, as is this one.

You hit all the right notes there for us mere mortals ... we would hear the righteous brothers with their music over sunday lunch in those days on the weekly hit parade on a valve radio. That was as good as it got. The quality of this later recording is of course so intimate now he has gone, yet listening to his vocals in the lyrics of the composition of this truely inspired song, the emotion of it all has never gone away in fact has only increased over time ... perhaps there is a correspondence in life experiences as you near 70 yoa as always this combination of whatever it is that makes us human comes together in such a way.

Most of us may not all understand all of the technical aspects of a performance, and yes it can be interesting to hear a review of them, but a lot of us know perfection when we come across it. I have watched hundreds if not thousands of artists, and even though I'm not particularly a fan of the Righteous Brothers, this one performance moves me like no other. Any singer, including Elvis have all fallen short when covering this song. Despite what you say, it would have looked ridiculous if Bobby had decided to use over the top hand gestures and facial expressions, it may not have moved you doc, but trust me when I say, you are in a minority.

Maybe some awareness of the song's history and backstory would be helpful to the audience or any listener. Some "context" is needed here to accentuate the tune's emotional message, to bring the listener to an elevated intimacy with the performer and the song.

Many of the "fans" reacting to the analysis fail to realize that Marc might be using Bobby Hatfield's 1964 live performance as a masterclass. Telling me what produces Hatfield's effortless (seeming) sound is not a knock on a gorgeous performance. Bobby Hatfield sang like Fred Astaire danced, making the nearly impossible seem easy and natural. Most tenors are pleased when they can hit the High C in their range. Bobby hits the G above that, and makes it sound as easy as putting on shoes. There was a ton of talent and a ton of work involved in being this great.

Bobby Hatfield was a tenor. My father, who sang opera at the Met, had great respect for Mr. Hatfield’s vocals. Hatfield hit C6 , extraordinary for a male singer. Bill Medley was the baritone. This live performance, on Andy Williams was watched by my family. Dad said it would go down in musical history. He was right. Regretfully, Dr.Marc, you came across as almost jealous of this mans perfect performance. But, I also am curious as to how-s a vocal coach, you have not heard of this duo. That I find remarkable. His parents were in the audience that night and he was very nervous. Watch the You Tube video where Andy introduces them. He is so breathless he can barely speak. Bobby also had stage fright and was nursing a head cold. I was 23 when he performed this live. Everywoman listening fell in love with Bobby that night. His singing was gorgeous and he was gorgeous. I am now 80 y.o. RIP, Bobby.

Close your eyes. Stop looking at the position of his jaw and teeth and listen -- really listen -- to the story he's telling. A man, locked away from his love. Yes, he starts quietly, shaky and unsure, anguished at the thought of losing her. Promising that he will return, he begs her to wait for him. His words become more plaintive and insistent, "I really need your love" and even demanding -- note the final "Are you..." Bobby Hatfield had control of every note and nuance in this song. Perhaps no performance is perfect. But this is as close as one could ever hope to be.

The live version is vastly superior to the studio/record version that most are familiar with such as the movie Ghost. This version has more power and is more dynamic.

I realize you're a vocal coach/teacher and a good listener, and you made some relevant points, but methinks you over-analyzed this performance. It's like you scrutinized a Van Goph and reduced it to strokes. Singing like this can't be taught. Most of it is innate -- the hook-up between the ear, brain and voice box control. Many natural talents like Bobby Hatfield here were already good singers when they were children and never needed vocal coaching. By the way, the most obvious quality in Hatfield's voice was his adept use of melisma -- turning a single syllable into multiple notes. R&B teaches that. Check out Jackie Wilson singing "Danny Boy."

As a female who has listened to this video of Bobby numerous times I think he is 'communicating' with his voice and enunciation and his smile and eyes. He is a crooner and this is a love song and I fall in love each time I hear it. His bite on his lip at the end is so real! I think if a female sung this you'd feel more moved.

MAYBE some of the "instability" in Bobby's voice (near the end as well as other spots in the song) is supposed to convey the prisoner's insecurity or hesitancy as to whether or not his woman will accept him, still loves him, once released from confinement after "a long long time."

I'm sorry don't remember what name you recorded under, can you refresh my 74 yr memory? However, this singer recorded this song 56 yrs ago and can give us chills. I really do not care for songs to be picked to death, especially when it has been around since 1955 and Bobby recorded in 1965. Sorry have to leave you to your opinion, but we all have one!!!!

Totally agree, you have over analyzed! As a professional, you will notice all the little nuances of Bobby's performance. However, I disagree that there should be more expression, body language, etc. Bobby's voice alone is enough to carry the song and convey to the audience the feeling of loneliness this person is feeling. It has been mentioned numerous times that Bobby sings this song so effortless, with no strain, no body language (unnecessary) which means the audience has no distractions and can concentrate on Bobby's voice alone. This was a live performance on the Andy Williams Show in 1965, Bobby had a cold, was nervous, as his mom was in the audience, and yet he gave a stellar performance! No auto-tune, no second chance, you had to be able to sing! As this comment is being written, this unsurpassed version of "Unchained Melody" is 56 years old! RIP Bobby Hatfield.

You need to understand the limitations of lighting and TV cameras of the time. He had to stand on one spot Period. It was a different time and he was also very nervous and the stage was dark which caused him to be even more constrained.

Thank God for these restrictions. They resulted in a much more pure, serene heavenly almost, performance. It would have been ridiculous if he, in an effort to evoke more emotion from people, ran around on stage flailing his arms or whatever....this is a LOVE BALLAD. NO such histrionics are necessary.

He is singing to someone. His new bride, joy. I call this "Bobby's Song." After all versions, Bobby's is by far the best. No falsetto here, he was a counter Tenor, amazing range. Always relaxed, no strain, just pure talent and his love of singing. Bobby always put all his passion into his performances. And together, he and Bill are amazing.

I played it over and over because his voice is so phenomenal in that song. That album also has stay with me and Run to your loving arms. The style of this music is what they call "Blue-eyed Soul" and this was done in a different era. With that in mind, we should adjust the analysis to bring those aspects in.

Analysis? Or promotion? "Hey I can find 'fault' in this flawless performance. Imaine what I can do for you!" Performance analysis needs to consider things like the technical restrictions placed upon a performer during a live TV broadcast. What you call tricks most people call emotion. But hey, using the RU-vid covention of reaction/analysis as a promotional tool is quite clever

He doesn't need to use his body more, and his singing doesn't need to be psycho-analyzed. The fact is, that you may be a voice coach & fancy nancy voice teacher or whatever, but this is HIS song and always will be. He had a hit song, and you never will, so don't be so jealous and pretentious by having to demean his performance. His name will live on, long after yours ever will.

Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do Unchained, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

I think that he should not be analyzed and critiqued and also I'm sure that in his day no one ever mentioned how his jaw or mouth moved, he just had talent and gave his all in his performances, why not just enjoy it!

Doctor, you seem determined to find fault with this performance, although you conclude that it’s “awesome.” (which sounds insincere coming from you). Over the years “critics” have often been disrespected as people who were jealous of those who COULD do it, because they themselves could NOT. Listen to Fil at Wings of Pegasus, a real music analyst. You, Doctor, could use an education! He can give you one, and he finds nothing to criticize about Bobby Hatfield’s iconic performance of this iconic song. It’s too bad for you that you just can’t let yourself enjoy the beauty and purity of it. His “staying in a neutral zone” is a ridiculous comment. And he does put his heart and soul into this performance, as he does in all his others. Far better authorities than you rank Bobby Hatfield as one of our greatest singers. He performed this 55 years ago and every day more people are reacting to it and loving him. Tomorrow you will be forgotten, but he Never will be! P.S. One aspect - I have watched many analysis of this performance and Bobby is so likable and charming here that I "want" the vocal coaches to like him. Bobby exudes a sincerity and vulnerability that I want to defend him somehow. Ridiculous...I have to defend Bobby Hatfield???

*FOUR things come initially to my mind:....1. The RANGE is s-u-p-e-r-b,....2. The EASE of his VARIED MODULATIONS,....3. There was no DISTRACTION by WINCING [like he was in pain] or GYRATING all over the stage, allowing you to CONCENTRATE on the song's performance, and,....4. There was NO AUTOTONE in 1965, meaning the singer had to rely on TALENT {TODAY'S singer I wonder how much of their voice is NOT electronically enhanced.}. In short, this is the BEST version by far!*

If you tried to autotune this live performance, there would be nothing gained as all the personality would be erased. I've heard someone demonstrate the futility by autotinung Steve Perry. People here have already mentioned the constraints of the production at the time but the audience's behaviour has allowed us to enjoy a fine performance. He had the voice, knew how to use the mike, and didn't need to prance about to draw listeners in. I watched this when it was first aired and appreciate the production values on the show even more now.

"It doesn't engage me on a deeper level" - that is the difference between male and female brains. The lyrics and the way they are delivered reach into the female brain and touch it in places that it doesn't with a male brain. Nothing wrong with that, it's just the way brains are wired. Having said that... Dr. Marc did have a physiological reaction halfway through - one sign of this was his breathing was actually more pronounced (right before he said the quoted statement). So Dr. Marc, while you might think you weren't being emotionally drawn in, your body and perhaps subconsciously, certainly was. That's the power of Bobby & Unchained Melody :)

Got to love a professor who critiques this successful singer. Remember what they say about teachers.... those who can, do. Yeah you know it. Here are the absurd comments: 1. What's the box with the lights all about? Well it was the Andy Williams show which was the highest rated, most watched tv show in a day when there were only 3 channels. Literally most of America saw this performance. 2. Andy Williams himself said "beautiful". He didn't explain it away like this guy. Heck I was waiting for professor voice to start charting singing vs time on an XY chart. 3. His singing is unstable. Really? It was live without auto tune, he's 25 years old, in front of a live crowd with half of America watching, and his mom was in the front row watching him sing for the first time. 4. His singing doesn't elicit an emotional response. What? He topped the music charts in '65 and again in the early 90's with two separate recording of this song. How many chart toppers does the professor have? And every woman I've ever seen watch Bobby Hatfield sing this, has cried, fell in love and became dizzy with emotion. But the professor thinks it's unstable and lackluster. I'm done with these so called experts. And he was voted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2003, the same year he died. Oh and his net worth was $60M. End of rebuttal.

When one has a voice like Bobby Hatfield’s no extra gimmicks are necessary. He doesn’t need to dance around or walk about, his voice does everything. His voice talks to us, anything else would detract from the perfection of that. I’ve listened to many, many reactions to this live performance, not one - apart from you - feels anything else needs to be added. Your opinion is as valid as anyone else’s but stands out as being the only one with so many complaints about what everyone without exception (that I’ve seen) has described as perfection.

In the "neutral place?" I don't know what you're hearing or seeing. I can see how he really poured his soul out in this performance. Listen to those runs and how he is bringing you into the emotion of the song and the lyrics with these emotional runs, especially with the decrescendo and the length of the run and the breath control in the first "Are you still Mine." To me, that is not neutral. That is about as emotional as you can get and you can see it and feel it. I was surprised that in that part of the song, Dr. Marc focused on how "interesting" his use of the vowel was in the word "mine." I have never seen a better performance here. I just don't agree with what Dr. Marc is hearing and focusing on here. Bobby Hatfield, in this performance does not need any body movement in order to convey the depth of emotion of this song. He could have been standing there like a statue and conveyed it with that angelic voice. Also, I didn't hear anything unstable about his voice due to his teeth not sticking out enough. And no comments on his range? Must be 2 octaves in this performance.

Enjoyed some of your technical expertise on how he is holding his mouth and so on. Couldn't get behind what you are saying about wanting him to inject more emotion and body movements into his performance. Enough people do that already for me. Plus, Bobby Hatfield's performance is really, really allowed to build, so that you are just knocked over by the end!

It has been reported that he did suffer from serious stage freight all his career which lead to his use of cocaine. However contrary to some reports at the time of his death, cocaine did not kill him he had a long-standing heart condition that ultimately killed him. Additionally, his mother was in that audience for that performance. No pressure of course.😒 Nevertheless, it was and still is my all-time favorite vocal performance.
