Good one, would like to point out though that you have told the young lad's character is played by Shailen Mukherjee. It is actually Soumitra Chatterjee

Ray is considered among the top 10 directors of all time in the world across all countries, cutting across all languages. Current crop of celebrated directors like Nolan and Scorcese are fans of Ray. Coppola, Lucas, Kurosawa, Kazan his admirer. Yet, he is known only in Bengal and abroad. He made only 1 Hindi film...not among his best work. He was almost a polymath - being a high class musician, artist and writer at the same time.

Absolutely, Subha. You’ve picked an accurate analysis of what we call as the Polymath. Ray was visionary, ahead of his times in terms of the stories he adapted, and even wrote. Very True. Thank You.

It is such an emotionally complex movie that it is perhaps still ahead of it's time. The acting is at a whole different level as they gaze, gestures, facial expressions and every tiny motion convey so much emotionally. The movie's slow pace, dearth of dialogues and brilliantly captured point of view shots are critical in immersing the viewers in the body and soul of the characters. Thanks for posting.

How apt have you put it, Nili. Perhaps, the way that this film is, it’s ahead- not just in terms of what it represents, but how brilliantly subdued is its way to do it. Brilliance and Ray, synonyms. Thank You :)

"the impecunious habitat of living inside a cage within a cage, the intimate conflict that arises on when one redundant wanders to the same establishment over n over again". educates the genius of Satyajit Rai. i can vouch he made this film for only himself cause at that time (and even now) the movies were watched to get ease up from the meddlesome of life, no one still asked for it, and can vouch even now that if some director dared to reiterate such animatic self pertained creativity in This time, they'll surely windup to the windy "cancel-culture' wave.

How beautifully articulated, Mr.Uddin. How true are you words. Times, as we know- aren’t stagnant in terms of complexity, but films like these, and in fact personalities like that of Mr.Ray make them stop, and let us see the other side of it- the one that is beautiful. Thank You Sir.

The end of the movie is different from the book. In the book, there is a separation of Charu from her husband. In the movie, they patch up their broken marriage.

And, now that you've said it, I'll surely consider Reviews of films recently released, and/or will release. Once Again, Ayushi. Thank You. (in my voice) Cheers! :)

Yes its a master work indeed. But do you know satyajit Ray fell in love with the actress Madhobi Mukhopadhyay here who acted as Charu.Though its a different point of view, and I also disagree with the fact that Mr Ray counts it among his best creations for that reason.

The original story was set in 1879. The peak of the Bengal Renaissance. Bengali intellectualism will never reach such heights again I'm so sad. Long live the empire!

And there are good films which are good by their own merit. Not everything is subjective "my opinion vs your opinion". There are objectively good films as well, like this once.

Really? So, boring movies are called masterpiece?! Watch others' movies by this time, especially in Bangla. Ray had the connections and endeavor to get international recognition. Others, much ahead in film making got the love from the audience. But because they did not get western platforms' patronage, so our deshi critics, like you even now, go on stamping masterpiece, on production of Ray!, however boring or failed they may be!!
