I’ve never been Mormon but I’ve read the BOM once and then bits and pieces over the years. Every time I hear people extolling the wonders of the book I get the feeling I haven’t read the same book. I find it to be boring, repetitive and unnecessarily wordy.

Boring because Mark Twain called it “chloroform in print.” My grandma always quoted that when I was growing up.

It’s so great the manual gets the members to actually think about how stupid it would be for nephi to engrave 13 chapters of Isaiah. Strange how it’s basically identical to the King James Version

To be fair, Matthew quoted from the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the OT), as did the rest of the Jewish authors of the NT. The translation had been around for at least 140 years by the time they lived. So he and they were quoting from an authorised version of the OT used by many Jewish scholars in their day.

The Book of Mormon is not boring at all. I love the Book of Mormon! It is one of the most exciting, interesting, intriguing books I have ever read. I have probably read it at least 40 times and parts of it many more than that. I never tire of the stories and I have finally begun to understand Jacob's parable of the olive vineyard. It is the word of the Lord meant for us in these latter days. I would recommend reading and praying about it. Just you and your Father in Heaven. No Sunday School. Sorry RFM.

I am glad it makes you happy. I was happy when I believed in Santa Claus an dit took me using real logic to figure out it was a myth and my mom was Santa . So as an adult I found that Book of Abraham is proven to be completely wrong and is an Egyptian funeral text and has NOTHING to say that is in the "Pearl of Great Price" The church lied and said it was burned in the Chicago fire but was amazingly discovered in 1967 that the church had it in their vaults. so if JS can not translate that and the church lied ...and Joseph Fielding Smith tore out of the history of Joseph his handwritten 1st vision iwhich Is NOTHING like what we have been told..He was finally forced to tape it back in. So much nonsense. But maybe Reideer can fly and pull Santa all around the world in 1 night..

Once again, my friend, you have taught me well. Today I saw how Joseph extrapolated Isaiah to the D&C. Even though I was raised Mormon, I never enjoyed reading the BOM, but I intuitively knew that some thing was wrong with it. For years, I tried like hell to believe it until I finally could not. Between my freshman and sophomore year in colloge, I studied the history of Mexico in Mexico, where I learned that during the conquest the Spaniards had access to steel, horses, and gunpowder, not to mention smallpox, that gave them the advantage over the natives because the natives new nothing of the formentioned list. Six months later, I was called back to serve a mission in Mexico. It was then that I first started to read the BOM and learned that the Nephites had access to horses and steel. I had a dilema: who to believe: my academic teachers or my religious ones? I wanted to be a good missionary, so I chose religion over secularism. Some 50 years later, it was the items dealing with the BOM that I had placed on my proverbial shelf that came tumbling down on me like the items in McGee's closet, and I could see how dangerous the items I had once innocently placed on my shelf were because, altogether, they destroyed my testimony of the BOM. When I lost my testimony of the Book of Mormon, I lost testimony of anything religious dealing with its author: Joseph Smith, including the church he supposedly restored. Please share with me a copy of your notes for all your Sunday school classes you will have taught. Much of what you have taught here I have been familiar with, but, big R, you have accumulated the ideas in recognizable and learnable sections, and done a hell of a job, if I may say so. your work on these lessons remind me of Arza Evans'work in his book The Keystone of Mormonism. I was familiar with most of what he had to say, but like you, he did a hell of a job stitching the ideas together. I often think of the phrase "Somewhere I've read...." Tonight you've taught me where that somewhere is concerning Isaiah and some Mormon scripture. Gracias, Hombre! ."

Thank you for addressing the virgin birth Messianic prophecy! I am a believer in God and the Bible, and I have been shocked with the amount of Christians who believe in the virgin birth or that everything is all about Jesus in the old testament. Sometimes it ain't! But then once we realize there is no VB prophecy... What do we do with Matthew and Luke? We research until we figure it out but until then we stop using those accounts as true. They were obviously added by men who had no understanding or wanted to deceive. Actually we are finding that to be true with a lot of the new testament. It's a shame Christians won't read the whole Bible, it really does help weed out what was seemingly added out of context or misunderstanding from the scribes. Having read the whole Bible is what makes me cringe to listen to the BOM, it's just a side story that truly does not belong.

BoM has no real substance. The characters are Just a bunch of stiff obedient rule followers rubbing their virtue into everyone's noses. Even though Nephi is a thief, a liar, and a murderer. It's interesting how according to mormonism. Doing bad is good in god's eyes as long as everyone gets to benefit in the end...

Only since the rebrand with President Nelson. The church spent millions having members embrace the proud identity of "I'm a Mormon". RFM is extremely generous with the book of Mormon understanding its literary story, important themes, history, and theology A strong testimony should only be strengthened by the truth, so give this a shot! 🙂

It must be inspiring to know that archeologists have determined that ancient American cultures did have access to metals, including steel and that horses did exist during The Times that the book of mormon claims they did. It must be faith promoting for you. It'd be kind of silly to think that they could carve rock with another rock, right? God says He will prove His work. And the Book of Mormon is not boring, it is amazing to the seeker of Truth and the spiritually minded.
