Just like with cherry, English speakers heard the singular "pease" as a plural "peas", thus creating the brand new word "pea"

I remember reading tintin as a kid, and for some reason i always assumed licorne was le icorne because i knew english unicorn (i reinterpreted it afterwards as uni-icorne).

The Belgian Dutch word for uncle is "nonkel". You can guess where that comes from.
