Why is the front too low on this top?

My client came to me asking if I would do something about the looseness of her top. She thought maybe put some extra pleats in the front. But that would just create more poofiness.
When looking at the top, the shoulder seam was too far forward, and the back panel looked to big to me for her body shape.
Check out how I resolved this. Enjoy

Love the calming music. That simple alteration made your client look 12lbs lighter.

Great idea, thanks. I turn the sound off and like just reading your notes as they come up, I personally don't like background music, everyone is different :)

Ah! You're a goddess! That looks so much better. Thanks to your client for allowing you to film it, and to you for giving the time. This will be a huge help with a couple of knit tops that are too big around the neck. They are a knit so I'm a little afraid because I've never sewn knits and I don't' have an overlocker. One I am taking up the shoulder seam. I got some clear stabilizer for it. The other I will try the center back like you did here. Both have edge binding and this video saved me from doing it the wrong way. I just have to get my courage up to go do it. I haven't got anything to lose since they are unwearable as they are. I feel like I'm in a war with the ready-to-wear industry. ;-]

Hi Manateeka, The knit top that you are going to take in the back (if it is a similar amount to this top, then you do not need to overlock the excess off. And if it is a lot, then you can bind the edges with bias binding. It is best to use a bias tape than something with no stretch in it. It would pull with no stretch. I would think you would just sew straight thru from top to bottom. But make sure you do the exercise of pinning the shoulders, armhole and sides so that you get the exact center back. Another option to edge with the center back and or the shoulders is to bind with a light stretch lace. That works really well. Hugs Judith

Here is a link to a cardigan I shortened using the stretch lace to cover the cut knit. Maybe it will help you ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T-BVtEvJOsk.html

Those sleeves are so nicely finished! The scalloped edge on the stretch lace is a nice touch. I don't think I'll need to cut the excess in the back, but I won't know until I get a friend to pin it for me. Tonight I finished one shoulder of the other top. The satin stitch foot from the cardigan video really helped. It's all pretty rough, but a good learning project, and I'm sure the other shoulder will be better. Thank you for the guidance!

Very nice! Good fit is so important, even if it's not a tight fitting garment. Now if only there was a way to magically widen back panels...I have an athletic figure and most formfitting dresses/blouses look to tight at the bust even though it's actually the back that's too tight.

There is a way. Create a back side panel. Here is a video that is unlisted of colour blocking. You can do this with any dress or top. Judith ru-vid.com?o=U&video_id=JHchLXbVcsg

Hm, I can't open that for some reason. I think I know what you're talking about though...I do it occasionally with cute t-shirts...I'm partial to the kind of prints that are more likely to be found on girls shirts (unicorns and stars and such *g*) and I sometimes buy the biggest girls size they have, cut off the sleeves and put in a back side panel in a matching/contrasting colour so they will fit me. It just seemed too much hassle with a set in sleeve, because you would either have to remove it first and create a new back side panel with a sleevehole, then put in the sleeve again...or do a kind of princess seem on the back, which would be even harder to do inconspicuously. Or am I overlooking something?
@JudithTurnerakagenie
@JudithTurnerakagenie 7 лет назад
If you add to the side back panel, then you have to also add to the sleeve. If the fabric is a stretch you can get away with less in the sleeve because of the stretch. But a gusset in the sleeve would the the way to go. Then you don't have to unpick the whole sleeve. This video is unlisted for my Magic Circle members. I thought you might be able to watch it. Now I know that only those in Magic Circle can. Sorry about that

Ah, I see! I never considered adding a gusset to the sleeve. Now it seems so obvious...I'm sure this will come in handy at some point. Thank you so much for your patient replies!

Great video and very well explained, thank you! I also loved the music and wonder if it might be a soundtrack to some movie? I would really like to know so perhaps I could find this music for myself, I find it very relaxing, not sad, must very calming and beautiful. Thank you.

Oops, I checked the link and that is actually for piano solo music, I guess the one someone else referred to as the "jazzy piano". I was actually complimenting you for the music on this very video above, where it is a full orchestra playing and not a jazzy style!

I was thinking that maybe people are sick of the music I am using. I personally love it. Will ditch this one for the original for the next video. That one is adding a frill to a dress that is too short. Editing it now. Judith

How do you pull in the neckline to make it smaller? I have tops that show my bra straps at the neckline. I tried making bra holders but this work for bra strap that slip off the shoulders and my problem is the extreme opposite. All the tops have set in sleeves. Please help , I'm getting so frustrated. Thanks!

Hi Evonne There are other videos on how to raise it at the shoulder. The sleeve would need to be taken out and reset. I have this type of video down for my Magic Circle members only. I haven't done it yet, but it is one of those videos that I keep exclusive for them. However, you can either use the method in the video you watched and create a center back seam, or take up the shoulders and reset the sleeves. The other week I actually put two darts in the front panel down to the bust. This was because the front panel ONLY was too big, and the fabric was patterned. I unpicked the lining and the outer at the position I was putting the darts. Created the darts on but sections and put it back together. Keeping in mind there is always under-stitching that needs to be unpicked. Hope that helps.

Judith Turner Thanks for your reply! I guess I'll have to do it the hard way - taking off the sleeves. It will be worth the effort because I have tried everything else. Last resort will be adhesive tape in the bra straps!

When you get into altering, it really doesn't take too long. Sometimes the garment has a chain stitch which can be unpicked really easily when you know which way to unpick it. and there is a way to unpick overlocking. You might like to check out my video on How to unpick seams.

My mom cannot find a nice long sleeve top with a small neck hole . Or any kind of tops with small enough neck holes.
@JudithTurnerakagenie
@JudithTurnerakagenie 6 лет назад
You could always add some stretch fabric. Like a polo but not so high? Or take in the center back like I did in this one. Or create two darts either side. Or take up the shoulders. It would depend on the top structure.

Judith Turner I should take a sewing/stitching class. Would Joann’s fabrics offer a class on how to alter clothes?
@JudithTurnerakagenie
@JudithTurnerakagenie 6 лет назад
You would need to contact them directly. I have no idea whether they do clothes alteration courses or not. The only one I am aware of is Olds College, Alberta Canada. They use my book to teach their students.

Judith Turner thank you so much Judith for your replies. It’s rare that video uploaders reply to messages and even more awesome that you’re so prompt. May I ask you a question about what could cause strange dye/discoloration of one piece of clothing out of the dryer (or maybe in the washer but was never noticed until after getting out if dryer)? None of the other clothes were affected. Do strange now I have had this happen twice and these are not some stain I got on there by normal things like drinks or food. Also , what could cause random tiny holes in tops like T-shirt’s or non-jean fabrics? Drives me crazy !!
@JudithTurnerakagenie
@JudithTurnerakagenie 6 лет назад
I cant help you with the stains. Other than the fact that one garment is not dye resistant and is bleeding into other clothes. That happens. Particularly black clothes. I always wash my blacks separately to any light colors. Regarding the holes. If they go into a laundry basket before washing, keep a look out for ants. They love to eat clothes. Or silverfish. But ants are the worst. Put a bag with lavender in the laundry basket. Should stop them

Or Mark with chalk before removing pins.

I actually have a taking in technique that does not include marking with chalk over pins. In fact I explain why in my book.
