Assuming the universe is infinite and filled with an infinite numbers of stars, the night sky should be bright and not dark. This phenomenon, also known as Olbers' paradox, kept astronomers confused for a long time.

There's also the fact that the Universe's expansion is accelerating (possibly approaching exponential growth, as dark energy dominates more and more). If its expansion were consistent, light from further away would still eventually reach us, it would just take a longer and longer. But it's not, so eventually, we will stop seeing stars far away.

Redshift only explains the color, not exactly the full energy content. That can be explained by the fact that light simply gets more diffuse with distance, until only a few photons are headed exactly your way. At that point, they get drowned out by the brighter light sources.

It might've been relevant to add that because of the accelerated expansion of the universe, the observable universe is in fact not infinite, but bounded by the cosmological event horizon with radius ~46,6 billion light-years. Hence, the number of stars in the observable universe is not infinite, but ~10^22, so no bright white sky.
@Idiotdragon8

Well, the observable universe isn’t infinite. From what we know, the universe is possibly infinite.
@anonymusmuggle

@@Idiotdragon8 Precisely. But since the observable universe is the patch of space from where light may be able to reach us until the infinite future, it is physically *impossible* for anything beyond to ever interact with us. There’s also a finite number of photons. If a point of light even produced 1.2^100 photons in a 360° direction, at a far enough distance from the point of light, the gap between each photon might start to be noticeable (say 0.01° apart) and so it’s dimmer.
@juliavixen176
@juliavixen176 2 месяца назад
Photons are not exactly "things"... What's happening is that the amplitude of the wavefunction drops by 1/r² with distance... so the probability that you will have a photon interaction at your detector becomes less... but there's not actually a localized "photon" flying through space as a discrete point particle. (It's a wave of probability. )
@juliavixen176
@juliavixen176 2 месяца назад
So... the thing about this argument, is that it doesn't matter if the light spreads out, because if you have an *_infinite_* number of stars there should be light from every possible point in space you can see.
@Azravald
@Azravald 2 месяца назад
@@juliavixen176 if there were an infinite number of stars but all at an infinite distance away, the light teaching you would be negligible. So in reality there are some close enough to see and others really dim and still others (we're assuming at this point) far enough we can't see them. If we can't see them then they're not lighting up our night sky, hence the darkness. It's not about the total number of all the stars that possibly exist, just the ones close enough to see.

Because space is empty, and to see something there has to be something for the sun’s light to reflect off of and reach your eyes. There isn’t much in that black void between celestial bodies for light to reflect off of, so it remains black

@@Idiotdragon8if the universe were infinite, that would mean that every single patch of sky would have an infinite amount of stars in it. Even if they were all dim, the infinite amount of stars would make the sky bright. The answer, as said in the video, that there has not been enough time for the light of those stars to reach us.

Also the expansion of the universe gets faster and faster, and some distant galaxies are outside of our "visible universe", which means that the light from them travels slower than the expansion of the universe, and we will never be able to see them

Lots of the lights won't hit us because they're coming from outside the hubble volume. Lots of the lights do hit us but they're not visible to the naked eyes due to the dobbler effect. Some of the visible lights don't reach the ground because they're blocked or scattered by the particles in our atmosphere.

The density of stars in space, and the fact light loses concentration due to the inverse square law, means the sky would more than likely still be pretty dark regardless of how old the universe is and even if space expanding didn't shift the energy of light. Would it not?

The argument is that with an *_infinite_* number of stars, every single ray of light in every possible direction should intersect with the surface of a star... everywhere.

What’s crazy is that some of the stars we see at night have actually died a long time ago and we are still seeing the light that it was emitting when it was alive.

There is also the problem with photons phasing out of existence when their containers lose enough energy. Bumping on stuff while travelling costs energy, considering they are moving at vacuum at immutable speed. At one point they will encounter something which will absorb them. Hell, I absorb photons as we speak, slowly getting a bit more tanned.

The stretching of lights wave doesn’t just reduce its energy, it shifts it out of the visible spectrum all the way into the radio spectrum. So it’s not dark, it’s just not light we can see.

Not only that, but the MK1 Eyeball just doesn't have the sensibility to discern the light from the faintest/farther away stars without help. Eye is too small, it's tailored for daylight, and even then it can only detect certain wavelengths
@VladimirChibuckov

Also, due to the stretching, some light rays are shifted into invisible parts of the spectre (like IR or UV idk)

If you think about the photons coming off a star as a sphere made of little dots, as you make that sphere bigger due to distance the gaps between the dots get bigger and also the chance that the photons will entirely miss your eye.

It's really not about the stars when you think about it. The CMB used to be white. So even if there were no stars in that path, the stretch light concept preventing a white sky still applies.

My theory is that when the very first stars appeared, the universe wasnt as big as it is today, so theoretically, a night sky back then mightve been bright.
