The music notation theory actually makes so much sense

As many mathematical concepts such as algebra and algorithms entered into European languages from the Arabic language, via the universities of Spain under Islamic rule, is it not then feasible that the sign also originated from Arabic. One of the ways to create a question in Arabic is by using the letter alif at the beginning of a sentence " أ " there is a 'hamza' at the top of the stick."ء which looks remarkably like the top of a question mark. Just a thought!
