Why is the water in your toilet so much lower then it used to be? This is a fairly common problem that eventually happens in most residential toilets. The good news is the repair is generally very simple and easy. This video shows what is causing the low water level situation in the toilet bowl and how to repair the toilet yourself.

The water level problem described in this video stems from an issue with the toilet's fill valve. Many toilets come with old style fill valves that fail over time causing the low water level in the toilet bowl issue. The solution is to replace the old fill valve with a new modern valve and the great news is it is an inexpensive part and easy to install.

@MrKistel A relative of mine purchased a new toilet with 1.2 or 1.6 GPF. But this new toilet has very low water level in the toilet bowl. Do you think this high efficiency new toilet with 1.2/ 1.6 GPF causes low water level in the toilet bowl. And do you think if she replaced it with an old toilet which has more Gallons per Flush will have a higher water level.

Thanks for using Fluidmaster in your video! Just a quick side note for your viewers: Make sure you cut the refill hose down in length if needed. If the end of the hose is pushed into the overflow pipe too far it will cause a siphon and in turn "Ghost Flushing". The end of that hose has to be higher than the water level in the tank. Setting the water level 1/2" below the top of the overflow pipe and inserting the hose about 1/4" down into the small hole in the top of the pipe is the best way to prevent siphoning. We also include a clip with our fill valve that can be used.

Siphoning would be causing the water level to continue to fall to its lowest state even though the tank is all the way full with the Fluidmaster correct?

This may have been my problem. I just replaced the fill valve with a Fluidmaster fill valve and I must say it seems excellent quality, with the clip and great easy to understand instructions!

@@MrKistel Nice video Mr Kistel,, I live in an apt complex in Las Vegas. The water in out bowl is so low, its like dumping in a cup of water. They did what you did and replaced the thing, but the results were the same. I check my neighbors down stairs bathroom when they moves in and yup the same cup of water. Can you ascertain any problem that the complex might be having. We do live up the mountain side, but I been to gas stations and they all have plenty of water in there toilets. Let me know, like how many moving parts can effect the water in a bowl? One...

@@photo7839 sorry to hear about the low water level problems with your toilet. Another issue that could cause a low water bowl level is improper sewer venting due a blockage in the vent piping. In some case that actual plumbing in the building is installed incorrectly or even with out proper venting at all.

My bowl wasn't filling up to the point it did before I put in a new flapper in. And it was flushing funky. This was the first video I checked out and it solved my problem. I had hooked up backwards, the thingy that puts the water in the little pipe in the middle. Instead of going in the pipe the water was just going in the tank. I saw what yours was doing and was able to solve my problem. Working perfectly now. I'm a widow, who does many repair jobs around my house with help from you guys and gals on utube. Thanks so much for the post. You're the least expensive plumber I've ever had!

This solved my problem. Thank you. The filler hose had become disconnected from the vertical pipe and moved over. Therefore it was filling the tank instead of the bowl. The lady of the house is happy now that the toilet bowl has a normal water level again.

Thanks for posting this! I was having an issue even after installing the exact same fill valve you used in the video. As it turns out, the little rubber hose that attaches the the overflow tube was kinked, so I rotated the valve to make the hose straighter and eliminated the kink. Now the bowl fills up like it should.

Thanks for the help! Just bought a house and the basement toilet wasn't filling the bowl. Turns out when the last owner rebuilt it, they pointed that fill hose so it was completely missing the tube! But without your video I never would have known either!

You can’t raise a toilet bowl water. The water can only rise as high at the toilet was designed. It rises and then overflows into the pipe and down the drain. SOMETIMES the valve shuts off the water filling up the back tank before of the bowl fills up, that is the only time that you could raise the water. That is what happened in this video that the guy fixed. Before you waste any money on valves, get a bucket of water and slowly add to your bowl. That’s as high as it will ever get. If nothing changes then there’s nothing you can do. Sorry for the news.

You know what grinds my gears? I've got a top of the line one piece toilet that I paid premium bucks for yet the fill valve is squealing like a trapped pig and needs replacement and the whole thing is less than 5 years old! Our old toilet from the 50's and 60's ran for years without any problems except for the occasional bend float rod or leaking float ball which was an easy fix. Now while replacing the fill valve is easy if you can easily reach the freshwater fill line but my cramped bathroom has the toilet less than 6 inches from the side of the tub making it nearly impossible to reach the supply line! You gotta have arms that flex in a dozen places to reach this thing. Ok, I'm done, nice video and I'm not even going to mention the quality of today's kitchen and bathroom faucets, I'm saving that gear grinding comment for another day! Cheers and beers!

I am a master mechanic of all electronics and mechanical everything but toilets. You just saved me so much grief I guess I never knew the whole flush thing. I just installed a new valve float assembly and the toilet has not worked perfect sense. Well it was in-op before that but after the bowl level was always to low no flush. After watching you vid I realized the little bowl fill hose had a clip on it and I clipped it on the outside of the fill tube. instead of the inside. The mechanics of you explanation once your video hit 2 minuets on the dot. I ran for the toilet looked and found the problem right away. You are awesome. Thanks nice funny helpful video.

User-friendly (get it?) video for people who are not handy with plumbing and who cannot afford a plumber. MrKistel, I thought I'd share the results of the repair. The black rubber ring around the new apparatus was chewed up all around. Very odd. The surprise is that the repair did not make the water level increase. The imported toilet is a budget product from a big box store, so the location or placement of the key parts was unusual. The toilet had to be removed and turned on its side to reach one in particular. The hardware story guy commented he'd never seen anything like the configuration when he saw the picture on the phone. From here on out, only American toilets in our house.

Thanks for that! Mine wasn't leaking, but there is a valve on it, where the hose goes out. Mine was turned down too much, just opened it up all the way and water lever rose in bowl. Wouldn't have thought to look there until you pointed out what that hose really is for.

Before you mess with the valve, pour a bucket of water into the toilet, wait for the extra water to flow out. Now mark the water level with a marker, and now flush the toilet to see if the water level fills to the mark. If it's below the mark your water level is low.

The water in my tank reaches the top of the overflow and the water continues to run. Will adjusting the valve as you demonstrated when you replaced it resolve that problem? I constantly have to remove the tank lid and pull up the float.

Sometimes you can also pour a bunch of water directly into the bowl and wait a awhile. Then where the water level sits is likely the design intention of the toilet manufacturer.

I have a Kohler canister mechanism with this symptom, but my problem was there was a mineral deposit in the plastic part the tank refill tube mounts to. Poked it with a skinny screwdriver to clear the deposit and all better.

Very good. Only question is once you unpackaged the new tube, you adjusted it. Any hints on what you did there? Is there instructions with a new one how to do that adjustment before putting installing it?

Dude... I have been pooping onto dry porcelain for so long.. only to realize I had the hose removed from it's proper place due to it being too long. The tank lid must've removed it. A quick scissor cut and put it back in its rightful place. Finally I can poo again without the worries of getting poo on my fingers from having to manually wipe it... Phew. Nice short and concise video gets a thumbs up from me!

My problem is that the toilet BOWL water level to too high. If I adjust the float too low below the overflow tube it docent flush properly. HELP!

MrKistel - I replaced the flush valve with a new/modern one and the water level in the bowl is still very low. No change after the install. There are no leaks in the new valve, flapper is good and the water is rushing out full blast from the black flush valve hose into the overflow tube. Water level inside the tank is at the proper height. If I pour a ton of water into the bowl itself, the water level drops back to the same exact spot right as I stand there. :( Since installing the new valve didn't work - do you know what else may be the cause? I've Googled this problem and coming up with no solutions (other than people changing the valve and it works for them again). I just have a regular Vitra 1.6 Gpf/6.0lpf toilet in case that helps? Thanks!!

Might possibly have something to do with the plumbing sewer pipe venting being obstructed.

FYI in my old European toilet the bowl water level always stays the same (European toilets are wash down, not siphonic). Tampering with the tank fill valve and it's arm and floater just regulates how much the tank fills. My old high tank once filled up to more than 4 gallons. I reduced the fill level to about 1,5 gallons by bending the valve arm and now it wastes much less water than before.

The problem with the toilets made after 1994 is not the qty of water used to flush, it is the WATER LEVEL in the bowl. P00P sticks to the side of the bowl because there is no water for it to drop into, so even 4 or 5 or 6 flushes won't clean the bowl. How does THAT save water? The government should admit this was a bad idea and fix it. Or toilet makes should figure out how to store more of the water in the bowl, instead of in the tank. I have an old 3.5 gallon wash-down flush toilet. I would like to get a new one that is chair height, but I'm not willing to p00p on the porcelain instead of into the water. I have added jars filled with water to my tank to reduce the amount of water used in the flush. A lot of water isn't necessary if there is plenty of water in the bowl so the p00p doesn't stick to the porcelain. Also, given that urine is sterile, I subscribe to the saying "if it's yellow, let it mellow - if it's brown, flush it down." I want to save water, but NOT by having too little water in the toilet bowl so that the porcelain gets nasty.

+Grace Birdsong That's the problem with the wash down design. On the other hand, the siphonic design is cleaner but prone to clogging. It seems that if you're in America, Canada or Japan to name a few countries you can only buy or use siphonic toilets and if, instead, you're in Europe you can only buy or use wash down toilets.

TeraVolt Thank you for the clarification!!!! I'm not religious but God bless you haha... Science, bitcheesss!! I'm European (Finland) and my toilet had somewhat low water level. Way lower than this video. I was like oh shit are the pipes clogged. Thankfully my toilet isn't siphonic (I guess) because I wipe with a lot of paper and I have to flush the toilet 3-6 times after taking a shit.

How do you replace the other one because when I raise the fill valve the other one water line is too low so I can't raise the fill valve because it's higher than the water line
