Drake is one of the greatest rappers of all time and the biggest of this generation. There’s always the question of who is his predecessor but I’m here to tell you there isn’t one… at least for now

@vrrtvrrt5700 I'd say the last superstar was Lady Gaga. I remember back in high school when Fame Monster came out, she and her music was EVERYWHERE like nobody since. The last of a breed of genuine megastar. The only person after her to come close to that IMO is Adele and she was much more low-key. I know Bieber was popular but he's more of a constant chart presence (for some reason) than a superstar.

Drake and Kanye are the most unique, versatile rappers to have ever entered the game and neither of them will ever have a proper prodigy that will encapsulate their genius. It’s just impossible to recreate their personality, charisma, voice, message, musical talent, or impact. Travis Scott is Travis Scott, not Kanye. When you get a Travis feature you get a Travis feature, not a Kanye one. Kanye’s lyricism and flow is leagues above Travis. Closest thing Travis has done to touch Kanye’s genius is his grandiose production and ear for melodies

Social media killed the organic growth of an artist. A lot of the current goats had to face difficulties, challenges and adversity. Nowadays, you just need a co sign or hot collab and that’s it, which is great and makes things convenient. But that shit sounds boring/uninspiring. There is no story attached to their comeup or brand where someone like Drake gets shit from everybody, rap fans not validating him on their list and is still defying the odds by dropping hit after hit.
@TheBamaPrinceable
@TheBamaPrinceable Год назад
Agreed. And as such you got people still making hits but feeling less and less impactful with each new track/album. It's weird, because while they're still on, it's like they should have fallen off by now at the same time. Streaming has lead to a lot of astroturf and the natural shelf lives of many acts (like Drake and Bieber) being extended well past what should have been their expiration date.

Jack harlow being the 'Next Drake' seems to be more of a criticism for Jack more than anything. When Jack released his last two albums, I've seen being saying that he has nothing to offer when they have Drake to listen to. To them, Jack Harlow is the walmart of Drake. As for Drake himself, I agree it'll be many more years before star power and success will cool off, even though I don't listen to his music, it seems that every album that man drop, is a successful one.

honestly i don’t see him ever retiring. and Like you said, rap artist are usually burned out within if not the first five years they definitely don’t get a good 10 years but with somebody like Drake him being such an international superstar, I don’t see Drake really ever going away or retiring or like passing the flame on because when you look at people of his stature, nobody of their stature really passed the torch. who is Beyoncé gonna pass the torch to? it can’t be done. who is Madonna gonna pass it to? Michael Jackson didn’t pass the flame on to nobody. Carrie Underwood never passed the flame. Taylor Swift can’t pass the flame on to anybody. Dolly Parton never passed the flame on. Kanye West can’t pass the flame on. honestly, I think one of the test of being a true superstar is not being able to pass the torch because you’re so big nobody under you can ever compare or be as that guy as you. you can tear people up for a couple months or even put them on to their career but they will never be as big as you matter fact they will always be known as that person Drake put on, or kendrick Lamar’s cousin, or the rapper that J. If you take the right artist from The states who got respect for the Latin community/Spanish community, that's an easy collab. Drake ft bunny was crazy good Nikki Minaj ft Carol G was crazy good I also think that the problem with the States is that the respect for others' languages is not there. So it can make it hard sometimes. Just to clarify i’m not talking about goat rapper i’m talking goat artist ever like in comparison to the beatles, queen, MJ etc. This also isn’t me saying he is bigger than all of them but he wants to be in that convo cus he’s like the one undisputed goat of this generation where everyone in our generation likes atleast 5 drake songs. I dont think there is a singular "next drake" but we are at a point where the elder statesmen are beginning to pass the torch for the people next up. We see Drake posted with 21 savage and Central Cee during the on the radar freestyle. Nicki and Cardi B are both hopping on features and providing cosigns. Kanye has his various proteges like Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, (Fivio for a bit), and Kaycee. We are at a transitory time. Drake is a once in a life time type talent so I dont think someone can emulate it exactly but I can see where the landscape is headed.

As far as the sports comparison goes Drake is literally Lebron. Lebron and Drake are both easily the biggest in their fields even if ppl don’t give them the “best” tag, they’ve both been around for so long and dominant tht it’s so hard to say there is another one of them. However when u look at the NBA and as Lebrons gotten older, it’s harder to call him the best player in the NBA anymore even tho he clearly is still good and nothing he’s done can be taken away from him but when there’s ppl younger than him like Giannis, jokic, Luka etc. thts when it’s pretty clear like we can’t overlook the young guys who are just as good if not better. In terms of rap there just isn’t anyone out rn and as much as I love JID and i wanna see him achieve the mainstream success he 1000% deserves, i just don’t know if the ppl are gonna fuck with him like tht unfortunately same with baby Keem who i think is an even harder sell.

“Y’all keep talking bout who’s next but I’m about as big as it gets” drake said it himself. Does anyone actually believe most of these rappers today will go on the run that drake has been on? We tend to downplay artists when they are alive and actively dropping.

The thing is sounding like drake doesn’t make you the next drake that’s why Harlow isn’t being the next drake needs to be more about balancing pop appeal with legit hip hop credibility in which case id go Doja cat or maybe a baby keem as a bet but that’s probably wrong

Drake was always positioned to go beyond what Jay had established in hip hop. Jay was an innovator and the previous number one and reigned for quite some time. I think Drake could be number one till like 45. But eventually you get tired and want to enjoy everything you worked so hard for, so who knows.

Music isn't a sport. But the rap game unfortunately is. Though, it should NOT be. The sport of rap should be kept to battle rap circles, cypher rap circles, and genuine beefs. Creative arts are NOT sports. The rap game should stop being a sport. Because rap music is NOT a sport, it is an ART. Especially in a free era such as this one. Not saying rap needs to let go of competition in general. I'm just saying things MUST BECOME less cutthroat and personal.

Honestly I think that theres two reasons why there won't be a next Drake. 1. A lot of rappers just dont have a long shelf life. Rather than finding an original sound, its either rehashed ideas that have been done to death or they hop on the newest trend/wave thinking this will keep them relevant forever until that wave is done and theyre just washed up. Thats why more so "concious" rappers (JID, Tyler the creator, Danny Brown, Vince Staples, etc) stay around a lot longer. 2. Rap fans are sooooo disloyal to their artists. In the age of social media, the pressure for artists to stay relevant is constantly looming over them. So they have no choice to pump out music as much as possible. And if they take their time, they are forgotten, instead of being cheered on saying "take your time and perfect your craft and we will still be here for you when the time is ready". You want their music now but a rushed album is forever bad. Look at a band like Full Of Hell that has been active a lot be takes their time with their art and their fans are always there to support them. TL;DR: rappers are unoriginal and fans are impatient.

I ignored drakes entire career outside of Degrassi Jr High. Maestro Fresh Wes is the only Canadian rapper that ever mattered to me.
