Every year more than 1,000 tons of plastic rains down onto national parks and wilderness in the western U.S. Where does that plastic come from? And is it also in rain that falls on Washington, DC?

DDT isn’t the only chemical that’s bad for you that will stick to microplastics. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which used to be in electrical equipment like capacitors and transformers, will also hitch a ride, as will PFOA, which we just so happen to have a video about: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tqKEG5LxPiY.html

I think it's because the channel name, back then reaction videos like pewdiepie are wildy popular and the algortim thinks this channel are synonymous to reaction videos. The algorithm are still struggling with ambigous term like bts(k-pop) and bts(behind the scene), so you can type "bangtan end game" and it will shows behind the scene instead of bangtan kpop

There is a type of investigation and study called millipore that is used in manufacturing. It basically does what you just did. Collect a sample by washing a part and then drying it onto filter paper and then investigating what the debris could be. Lots of parts have "cleanliness" standards that feed into that investigation.

What is that digital microscope that you're using?

As a chemist, I’m disappointed that you didn’t try some spectroscopy (e.g. micro Raman) to verify if those particles were micro plastics. But maybe that’s one thing for a follow up video?

Exactly! I am not a chemist but this wasn't scientific at all..

She's doing it from home. If she was using a lab of some sort she could have used fluorescence to make the plastic bits light up under the microscope. The point of this video seems to have been that micro plastic is so pervasive you can find it this easily (even if you can't positively identify it).

@@ACSReactions Right, thanks. I own a similar device. It's advertised as 1600X. Obviously I remain a bit sceptic about that, but it should at least give comparable results. I'm currently waiting for rain. ...waiting. ... Know of any good rain-dance perhaps?

@@theplanetrepairman9945 looking at how those researchers have to prepare a room for a rigorous microplastics study, you can just plug a coffee filter over a house vacuum cleaner and wash it with distilled water to get a lot of samples
@theplanetrepairman9945
@theplanetrepairman9945 3 года назад
@@giovane_Diaz I'll have a go at that. There's also an air-filtration system here (given the virus situation I thought that was a good idea), I may be able to wash something out of the Hepa-filter. But your Idea seems less of an effort.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.
