This is Dollar Cove on The Lizard Peninsula near Helston, or should it be called $17 Million Dollar Cove?
We investigate the fascinating story of the shipwreck of the ‘St Andrew’ in this cove in 1526. This vessel, which is also referenced in some accounts as the ‘St Anthony’, was laden with a vast fortune belonged to the King of Portugal, it was wrecked in heavy seas. Because of the value involved the cargo manifest still survives, the value of the goods onboard would be worth $17 Million Dollars today.
We delve into our collection of books, some old and some new, to try to piece together the facts surrounding the wreck, to establish if any of this fortune might have been saved, and if so to find out who benefited and where did this fortune end up?
This story is fascinating, it involves many of the prominent Cornish families from the time, conflicting accounts from the locals and the surviving crew, the involvement of the Tudor King Henry VIII, and the possibility that some of the treasure is still hidden somewhere in Cornwall.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RU-vid, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
We love your comments and read all of them. We also answer as many as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot answer comments received more than a week after publication.
