I understand Barcelona citizens. Until recently I have lived close to one of Vienna's tourist hotspots (Vienna has 12,3 Mio. overnight stays, more than 6 times the regular inhabitants, and over 3 Mio more than live in the entire country). During the travel seasons, certain parts of the town are almost off-limits to locals. Tourists make everything more expensive and more annoying for locals. They act entitled to an almost infuriating degree. They are disrespectful to local customs and soo tacky (e.g. walking around in beachwear at places in the city where locals live and work). Reflecting on this, I decided some years ago that I don't want to be even a minute part of the global tourism problem anymore.

Your country demands visa from our citizens? We demand too. Which is the craziest thing in the world from an economic point of view (only 5 or so million tourists visit the country annually. 15 times less than Spain!) How many times I saw the tourism association crying out loud "we have the stupidest government in the world!" A few ways to reduce tourism to higher quality (vs quantity) is 1. Reduce the low cost carriers flying in. 2. Charge a tourism fee for every visitor 10-25 euro 3. No Airbnb or tourist apartments Raise the level or tourism to higher quality and higher price point for those who visit. If total tourism brings in 1000 million euro with 1 million visitor, try and make the same with half million tourists. Increase minimum wage for all workers in tourism and food jobs, or all jobs. Your salaries are too low. Raise it up for everyone. Rent control apartments

Who are the people making things more expensive?
@autumnlynn
@autumnlynn 2 месяца назад
I find it really interesting that these people think they are the only ones in the world affected by tourism. AirBnB needs to be reigned in, but assaulting innocent humans just for being present in their city not knowing their story or struggles or what brought them there?? It's utterly disgusting. We feel this in the US, also. I was in BCN last weekend on the way to visit my son in Valencia and I'm still here in Spain right now. I'm so glad I didn't end up a victim of these people. I raised my kids in Orlando (we have been in Florida for generations), and it wasn't always fun getting stuck in tourist traffic trying to get to work or get my kids to preschool, etc. The housing is completely out of control in Florida at this point, and wages are naturally low because most are service industry jobs. And it's never inexpensive to live in a highly desirable area. But I've NEVER seen Florida citizens attack people and families just for being there. Shameful. The good news is that I think Spain will get its way. Most people will stop coming, at least for a while. It'll be interesting to see how hard the economy takes the hit. The sad news is that we learn more about each other when we travel and connect with other cultures. This isn't just about "vacationing", it's about expanding your view and perspective of the world and its people.
@paulatorralvo5400

Spanish people are aware that they aren’t the only ones effected, but not because others have it worse they are going to stop claiming their right to live in their own city. In the south of Spain and the Canary Islands the situation is much more alarming. Since those regions are suffering the effects of desertification, water is a valuable resource. This places just can’t take more residents, the resources don’t allow it. But tourist all around the world visit Spain and behave horribly, not taking interest in the culture and being disrespectful to locals. If you have also experienced the downside of tourism you should empathise with the residents of Barcelona because they are basically living in an amusement park for foreigners. The situation has gone crazy in a lot of places all around the world but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit Spain. Take an interest in the history of this beautiful country and don’t get fooled by trendy spots. The real Spanish experience, sadly isn’t in Barcelona, Malaga or Mallorca anymore.
@autumnlynn
@autumnlynn 2 месяца назад
@@paulatorralvo5400 I very much empathize with their situation. Florida probably has much worse behavior than even Barcelona with all the Spring breakers on top of actual amusement parks. I even understand the water issue because Florida's aquifers are going to empty out and it's definitely an issue. Water is now an issue in so many places, especially out in the Western US where the Colorado River is drying up almost completely putting many states at risk. However, I do not condone the abuse/assault of other people. These people are upset that tourists are misbehaving and then LOWERING the bar on misbehaving by behaving even worse. They need to talk to their government and work with their government to make change, legislation, and processes that provide guardrails for tourism and prevent negative consequences. Not use their energy to hurt innocent people. Most of them were most likely visiting respectfully. And they do not know their stories. Did one of them just beat cancer? Lose a parent or child? They are sadly drawing attention away from their plight and towards their own bad behavior and lack of respect for others by treating humans as collateral damage. I do agree that Barcelona is not the place I'd like to be even though I met very lovely and respectful Spaniards while visiting and I was only there a couple of days on my way to Valencia. Florida is the same as BCN, Malaga, Mallorca... Valencia has definitely won my heart over the others thus far. I would love to live there. I love the people, the language, the culture, the city... I want to visit Granada, Sevilla, and some of the smaller towns. Spain is incredible. It's a beautiful country. I hope we can all find kinder ways to communicate our needs.

Otherwise people wouldn't have cared about us marching. I am curious to know what specific isolated incidents you are referring to. I don't think you understand the level of unfairness of our housing crisis, otherwise you wouldn't be saying these things. Besides, if you believe a desired place necessarily has to be expensive and therefore residents are rightly expelled, I guess there's a privileged background speaking and not just an ethical lecturer. Ah, and using hypothetical cancer survivors or other examples of the like is tricky. Those stories do not make up a serious political problem. Although I understand many complaints come from people unable to understand the severity of a massive structural issue we do need our politicians to fix. That's why we took to the streets.
@autumnlynn
@autumnlynn 2 месяца назад
@@Ogogogmomomoalalal I am living with my parents right now because of our housing crisis. So is my sister and her son. Our homeless population is growing into massive tent cities all over the country. I don't think you understand that you are NOT the only people dealing with a very serious and unfair housing crisis. This does NOT give anyone the right to harass innocent people. More importantly, it does NOT help your case AT ALL. No more than it would help mine to go harass and shoot water at families at Disney World and the beach and make them feel unsafe and unwanted. You have NO IDEA how many people flood in from all over the world every single day. How many of our homes are taken by Airbnb. How our highways and streets are crowded and more traffic accidents happen and car insurance is up and food costs are skyrocketing AND because of hurricanes, our home insurance ALONE is now $500-1200 per month on top of mortgage payments. Take to the streets. Protest. Take Airbnb down. Take the cruise lines down. I'm sure many of us around the world would join in and be a part of that because we are also losing our towns to commercialization of housing by Airbnb and giant corporations like Blackstone who are outbidding locals and paying cash and then renting these same homes back to us for double and triple the costs. Your assessment of America and many other areas in the world is highly inaccurate. I understand your plight. I empathize. But I do not agree in any way that mistreating visitors is the solution. I'm frustrated with our situation. Our politics are broken, no one is protecting us as groceries and rent triple and quadruple. No one also feels bad to pile into the US for a "better life" when we have a crisis in affordable housing. But I will never mistreat any of you who come here for any reason, as immigrants or tourists. It's not who I am. It's not your fault. You're all welcome here.

The 10,000 licenses for short-term tourist rentals is about 1.2% of the total units. When you report issues of this nature, which are important, it would be very helpful to include some facts.

I wonder if the renter's association can take more power. Some ideas: press for rent control, have some friends stay short term in your apartment. I have sometimes slept on people's floors where campgrounds aren't available. Share apartments to change short term rentals into long. Pressure legislature to severely limit short term rentals. Legislation to protect long term residents from eviction when buildings are sold. Pressure the city to buy buildings. In truth I know you have thought of all these ideas. I wish you the best in your struggles.

Is it tourists or the way they behave? .... or is it the type of tourists? Many time citys that complain about tourists for decades are extremely upset when they stop coming for some reason. i lived in Munich for a long time and proper city planing and lokals sticking together makes tourism an asset. ..... 5:59 get more busses. Barcelona is a world city not some village in the mountains. Everything is growing and keeping the local spots a secret is as old as tourism. 10:35 ... and they are all part of the problem 😆 lol

This will always be a problem with any place that has ideal temperature year round. There are simply too many humans and not enough "nicely developed" cities to live in. Let alone visit. Everything is about money so yeah, if they can lure more people and make more money, then they'll do what they'll have to do. It's a shame but ultimately, everyone wants to make money with as little effort as possible. The consequences be damned. It's a shame Barcelona has become this way.. 😞

Yeah. I agree with the protestors. It sucks when you city is crowded with tourists. But they should take it out on the government, not the tourists. Spraying water on people having lunch just sucks and it is bad manners. There are other beautiful places to visit.
