Turkey has been trying to act as a mediator in the ongoing row between Somalia and Ethiopia. The escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa are as a result of a maritime deal that also affects Egypt. Turkey has been a long-time partner of Somalia but has also been investing in the country for more than a decade. A new naval deal signed this year deepened the ties between the two countries. This explainer looks at their relationship and why Turkey is keen to establish itself in the region.

Half of Somali territories are under foreign countries so we understand wanting self-determination for your people. i hope a solution will be found that will make the Kurds happy. But, Turkey is a historic ally of Somalia so we aren't worried about any ulterior motives because every country has their interest. For now, our interests align and that is what matters.

Somali and turkey data back to the Middle Ages. The Ajuran empire and Adal Sultanate maintained good trade and military relations with the Ottoman empire. Somali Ajuran Empire defied the Portuguese economic monopoly in the Indian Ocean employing a new coinage which followed the Ottoman pattern, thus proclaiming an attitude of economic independence in regard to the Portuguese.
