When you're instrument is so good you just have to realize strings aren't meant to be fretted or bent.

Just wind the E B and G string wrappings…up instead of down on the post, changes the break angle so no more binding

I fixed my Les Paul Custom tuning problem by playing my reliable Stratocaster. Rock solid and stable. I got fed up. As much as I hate to sell my Les Paul Custom, that will happen in 2024. I just don't have the patience for it going out of tune. It has been on display and in it's case throughout the years. Beautiful but, frustrating. I tried all the things in these youtube videos and even installed a string butler. A bit better here and there but, still goes out with a couple of bends and some hard playing. I can't use it performing. The Stratocaster stays in tune even if I put it in the case for 3 days, comes out of the case in tune.

and here I am with a 240 dollar Harley Benton sc-550ii that stays in tune forever, despite all the abuse. An hour long session with two whole step bends and violent wide vibratos, and it's rock solid. Stock guitar, without mods, string butler or any other crap. Go figure.

Oh what a relief i must have imagined the D andG string binding in the nut because of the ridiculous angle Gibson over priced guitar headstock design and i must have imagined that when i installed the the True Glide device only $20.00 it stays in tune

Im sorry but nothing makes sense here. If it was so easy to solve this problem why hundred thousands ppl in the world are struggling with it ? And btw i have a stratocaster with floyd rose and it stays in tune forever, literally. My SG is out of tune every song, and im not playing differently the two guitars. Moreover if it is not a design flaw and only a problem of scale, a violin would never be in tune.

It's amazing that you can make a 20-minute video on this subject and not actually share any relevant information. Actual issues that affect 3x3 tuning stability: 1. Nut to tuning peg string angle/binding/proper nut work for string gauge & lubrication. 2. Bridge to tailpiece angle & (for bigsby) binding at bridge. 3. Proper intonation at bridge. 4. Properly functioning tuning machines which hold position and have no dead spots/play in their adjustment

Interesting. I'm curious as to why he didn't mention the nut as being suspect in regards to the D and G strings due to their angle (PRS changed that angle and has no tuning issues) when you read about that all the time online. My SG can't stay in tune on those two strings.... getting ready to file the D and G positions on the nut to more rounded towards the angle and change to locking tuners. We'll see if that fixes the issue.....

I did this and it worked a charm!! 2000 grit sandpaper is recommended but I used 1000 grit and carefully filed the D and G slots on the bridge and the nut. Just be careful not to do too much. Takes five minutes and gives you a new love for your guitar.

I've spent $3,500 on an ES-335, and $1,800 on an SG. I've spent $80 per instrument to have them set-up (which is something Gibson should be doing at the factory). That price does NOT include strings. So far, the tally is $5,480 (with the new strings) I've spent many, many more hours trying to tune them than actually playing them. When you buy a Gibson, you should start by yanking out the 3rd string entirely and just get used to playing without it, like the guy in the B-52s. There's no possible way under the sun to tune a Gibson's G-string. Simply impossible. I now have two very expensive guitars that I can't play and would never even think of bringing on stage.

Don’t give up on them, that’s an over reaction. The solutions you need are fine adjustment to the nut slots, slot lubrication, and try winding the G string upside down so it travels to the nut from the top of the peg. Put everything ‘under a microscope’ at every contact point and ensure there are no burs or improper binding of any kind. Check and test the tuning pegs. Make sure you’re winding the strings properly around the posts. If you don’t want to do any of that, sell them to me.

I have 5 guitars and they all go out of tune sitting around. I guess cause the house is air conditioned and where I sit them gets a little sunshine on them. Hot and cold does that to steel. Also if I'm not playing out I don't change the strings that often. But on my Les Paul I changed the stock tuners cause felt too much slack in the G tuner. Went with Kluson revolution locking tuners just cause I'm lazy and they're faster. Also changed the nut to a Tusc XL. Changed the bridge to a Tonespro locking bridge which has more intonation adjustability. And a alum tailpiece only because that's what Gibson used on the original Les Paul's. Also throwing each piece in got me better price for everything at once. Now my Les Paul is no better or worse than any other of my fleet of wood, metal, and wire sticks of enjoyment. I honestly believe the nut is the most important part of this tuning problem I'm always hearing about. Between the nut and the 19 to 1 ratio of adjustments, I feel like my Studio is way better than before. But I ruined the original value of a 97 ebony with gold trim ebony fretboard Les Paul. L O L ! Ooh ya forget to mention everything is in gold so the guitar still has that great classic look to it.

My prs stays in tune and my Gibson doesn’t. Either way you look at it it’s Gibsons being a bit shit. They should come out of the factory without any of this stuff needing to be done

I have two SG's and won't buy anymore. They're both for sale because they don't stay in tune. I always restring like in the video, and I just got locking tuners for one of them - still doesn't hold tune. I'm just done with them - they're pathetic and very overrated instruments. I'm losing a lot've money on them.

@grandelusion1148
@grandelusion1148 2 года назад
I have to say, I think you're doing the restring wrong. Its easy to mess up but its absolutely pivotal to keep your guitar in tune. the extreme gibson break angle atthe headstock cause strings to slip on gibbys. especially lighter guages. if you use this method and do it right its literally impossible for the string to slip. If you have two SGs and they both don't stay in tune, you're doing something wrong. Hell I have a Bigsby on my LP and it never loses tuning.

Strings are easier to bend on a shorter scale guitar. Not true. Only very slightly different, almost negligible. There’s a loss of tone with lighter gauge strings. Not true. Not on an electric. The Gibson nut needs to be dressed to compensate for the too sharp angle of the D and G strings. Wind them from the bottom up to help even more, especially the G.

I have 3 1980's Yamahas that all stay in tune. I hanve an epiphone les paul silverburst that I upgraded the pickups and electronics and it stays in tune better than any other guitar that I have. I also have an old '57 Les Paul Junior that stays in tune, a fender tele and strat that stay in tune. Enter my Gibson Les Paul Modern, and that guitar will absolutely not stay in tune. Changed the bridge, tuning keys, and 3 nuts by two different luthiers, still will not stay in tune. It's been setup multiple times and to date no one has been able to fix the issue. I'd buy another Epiphone before I'd ever buy another Gibson. I know that experience varies but it's obvious to me that, when it comes to Gibson, it's not necessarily as simple as a setup, strings, nut, bridge, etc.

Sorry! This isn't as simple as it appears. One thing that most younger players don't comprehend is that these guitars that we are so enamored with were designed to be used with a .012 or .013 high E string, a wound G string, (in Gibson's case, a .028, later dropped down to a .024), and a .056 low E string; often faltwounds. Back then, as far as Gibson strings were concerned, .011-.052 were Light, .012 were Medium, and .014 were heavy. At one point in time, Gibson offered more string sets than any other manufacturer, and made them in house. I've owned three different SGs in my nearly 40 years of laying. I've always used .012-.056 gauge strings, and not one was without tuning issues. I've changed nuts, had different nut materials, had different fret sizes, and it made NO difference. I have always strung my Sis in the same way as inn this video. Whether you play with a touch lighter than a feather, or heavier than a boulder, it should have little bearing. Let's look at some examples: Robbie Krieger uses .010-.046 and Angus Young uses .009-.042 sets. I've never seen either of them have tuning problems. More to the point, Pete Townsend who has used SGs and Les Pauls, has just about always been able to keep his Gibsons from going out of tune. He used .012-.056 Sonomatic sets; and he hits pretty damn hard! This doesn't mean that none of these players ever went out of tune; but it wasn't so often. On the other side, Carlos Santana said he stopped using SGs because he ghad problems staying in tune. The tuning machines are not as critical as the general public has been mislead to believe; of course, a quality made product is always preferred.

@67Stu
@67Stu 2 года назад
@@dimitrisaivaliotis5616 We all, or most of us will agree, that the SG is in a league of its own when it comes to tuning problems. (Les Pauls too to a lesser extent.) What actually resolves or helps solve them appears to be very subjective or circumstantial, at least, based on what we have all experienced. My mentioning of the string gauges was a matter of simple fact: lighter strings will contribute to more tuning problems on guitars that were designed to be used with heavier gauge strings; conversely, often thought of "solution" for SGs, the Leo Kwan Bad-Ass bridge, (for those of us who are old enough to remember them) had inherent problems with string height if heavier gauge strings were used, since it was designed to be used with .009s. Even the various neck joints and headlock angles that Gibson has tried over the years hasn't helped. I don't know what the solution is. We've all heard or come up with different explanations, theories, and remedies, and it still hasn't resolved anything in the grand scheme of "SG-dom." I would really like to know what Pete Townshend, Robbie Krieger, Angus Young, and Toni Iomi do/have to their SGs so that they don't have any tuning problems.
