Why isn’t New Zealand part of Australia anyway?

Despite having completely different accents I’m often mistaken for an Australian. To add insult to injury the Australian constitution claims New Zealand as a state - so much for trans-Tasman diplomacy. So why is New Zealand a separate country?

It is, but it's important to note that Western Australia was a crown colony at the time (as was Fiji) so it was therefore not self-governing, but more importantly the economies of Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia were not in great shape, and joining meant subsidies coming from the other states.
@haydenstevenson9312
@haydenstevenson9312 8 лет назад
The Australian economy is more advanced and NZ lags distantly behind ($67,458 compared to $41,555 GDP per capita). If NZ had joined Australia their economic development would be more in line with Australia's as you would have been provided with more benefits from Canberra than revenues you draw from your own population. But hey that was NZ's decision and we (in NSW) already pay for states that don't perform as well as us (e.g Tas, SA).

"So why does Australia claim New Zealand as a state?".. Simple Answer.. It doesn't. It did when the wrote the Australian constitution because they were hoping to incorporate New Zealand at the time, but now they won't even give Kiwi's living over there welfare benefits, which they should be legally entitled to, given that New Zealand is labelled as a state in their constitution so Kiwi's should automatically be Australian citizens also, and New Zealand a self-governing territory. Until they remove our nation from their constitution, they are abusing the human rights of their own citizens. Not that New Zealand's National government isn't doing that anyway..

The Constitution gave kiwis the right to join the Federation...which they rejected. Despite all the moaning and whinging you kiwis do, we don't owe you anything. You have free access to migrate to Australia, and what you do here is up to you provided it's law-abiding. If you want to access Australian welfare benefits and other goodies, then naturally you need to become an Australian citizen...something most kiwi migrants seem to have very little interest in doing!

@@mikespearwood3914 I hear this argument that nz should enforce the same laws on Australian citizens in nz that Australia has enforced on nz citizens gaining citizenship in Australia but we shouldn't be like that. Well that is the point this video missed entirety NZ have formed from the founding document of 1840 while the separate colonies (now states) acted independently. Some rather silly behaviour was in play such as different rail gauges etc. So a merger was mooted and these states decided to federate into a single entity from 1903. This has been partly successful, in the 1970s a common rail gauge was achieved. There is still however no such thing as an Australian drivers licence, there are still 7 different governments, and many of the objectives of federating are yet to be achieved. For instance border controls are often enforced between one patch of endless sandy desert and another endless patch. Australia is however recognised as one country by those outside the country, living in Australia you know that's not actually the case. NZ joining the federation would have been a mistake and history shows it was never taken seriously. The behaviour of Australia's individual states indicates that even Australia hasn't taken it too seriously.

What he actually said was that the kiwis are more chilled (eg easier to get along with) and thats his opinion - I dont have a lot of experience on this but I am inclined to agree, and I can think of a couple of reasons for it. 1.The Maori were an entirely different crew to the Australian aboriginal, Maoris had settled NZ relatively recently, they had traditions of warfare and seamanship and were a cohesive group. whereas the "Australian Aboriginals" were actually about 800 different nations some warlike, some not so much some hating and fighting with some tribes and so on. Not a cohesive group. The result of this is that they couldnt negotiate a treaty like the Maori did, The quite small tribe that first dealt with the invaders were very soon wiped out- they were pretty good fighters by all accounts but not a match for the british. The other nations didnt necessarily see that as an attack on their sovereignty, probably some of the closest tribes were thinking - great those bastards are gone we can stop worrying about them now. Doubly so the British had to bargain with the Maori and were forced to do it soon. 2. People settled NZ because they actually wanted to go there whereas Australia was a Penal Colony for a very long time before people realised what a great place it actually is. The result of this is not easy to explain but think about when a colony is set up - especially one at the farthest points possible, its hard to get good help, so all the institutions, police, political groups, movers of society etc are drawn from the general population which in Australia consisted of members of the Rum Corpse and Prisoners who had served there terms. Institutions such as armed forces and police and so on tend to develop and perpetuate a culture the existing culture shapes the attitudes of new recruits and so on. This is all conjecture on my part I will admit but I think it is only a matter of collecting some evidence and presenting it properly and it would at least be good to fuel a debate. Every five years or less, some scandalous exposee on Australian Police or politicians (eg 12 police bashing and tasering a half naked tourist to death, institutionalised child abuse by the NT corrections department, Whole NSW state3 government brought down when its proven they have all been taking bribes) - I dont know for sure if it happens similarly in NZ but I never hear anything like that coming from across the tasman. in New Zealand we see a much different picture. People settling there probably did so at great cost after much thought and were much more likely to make better police, politicians, post masters etc. And thus create a more chilled society than one that was based on prisoners and guards. I realise Im probably being a bit harsh on prisoners and guards but read about the Rum Corps and the soldiers and prisoners of the first fleets to Australia, they were a pretty rough crowd.

The last minute or so, of this video, is, I believe, not correct. Whilst true historically, that under the Australian Constitution, no further agreement, of Commonwealth member states is req'd, for NZ to be admitted to the Commonwealth, leading Constitutional lawyers are agreed - [I'm NOT certain, but I think the Australian High Court may have also already publicly commented on this matter], the NZ wording, in the preamble, is now only of historic or academic value and is no-longer valid, as a means of NZ gaining entry to the Commonwealth. In a nutshell, too long has passed and too much has happened for this entry to have legal validity, ie [as just one example], NZ itself moved from independent colony, to Dominion status and therefore, has carried out an act, that is outside the bounds of the preamble to accommodate, ie, the members of the Australian Commonwealth were drawn from colonies, not from colonies and dominions - someone more learned in the finer points here, will no-doubt express it better. But, a party to an understanding [NZ] has carried out an action, outside the bounds of the original understanding - also, just the passage of time has killed this possibility. Or, the one line version, the NZ listed in the preamble is a colony, not a nation - the existing preamble, cannot handle nation states and therefore would require an Australian amendment first.
@Soliloquy084
@Soliloquy084 8 лет назад
+mmmail1969 I doubt we will ever see this actually tested, either was from a practical perspective I wouldn't expect Canberra to agree to New Zealand's admission to the Australian Commonwealth without the states approval. You may very well be right in your interpretation however.

The population of kiwis in Australia is slowly growing as of 2015. It's still growing but a lot of us are going back because the mining booms finished. 2010 was the year most kiwis came with 26,000. In 2015 4,000 kiwis came and 7,000 left Australia. I have aunties in Queensland and ones already left and another has a kid that goes to school in New Zealand and a husband that works in New Zealand but she still lives here and I'll be leaving in atleast 5 months. We're all moving back because there are more jobs in New Zealand at the moment. Kiwis are loosing there jobs in the mines and don't get any benefits while looking for a new one because there foreigners so they would rather waste there money coming back then living poor in Australia.

I half suspect that the one of reasons relations between Europeans and Maori/Aborigines evolved so differently is because the Maori put up a reasonably organised defence, whereas the Aborigines defence was on a more individual tribe level (and it could have been different; apparently the early Sydney colony had quite good relations with the Aborigines on the southern shoreline).

So don't ever think that, that stand alone incident in CHCH was the first and only time when the convict invaded and 'shot us in the back'. I have never had so much pleasure down voting anything before, and here's why. New Zealand deciding not the join had more to do with economic, defence, communication, voting and ambition rather than racism like everyone loves to believe. In fact, the rights of the nataive peoples were left to the individual states rather than the federal government, long before NZ decided to leave. This means that the major point of your video - which you spent quite a good deal ranting about - is invalid. *Funny how you failed to mention that.* Here's some more reasons you left out. *Economic Reasons:* New Zealand raised around one third of her total revenue from trade tariffs, duties and excise, much of which came from the other six colonies, and a customs union would have limited New Zealand's capacity to raise revenue. *Voting:* The system of voting had more to do with plural voting rather than racisim, to which the New Zealand delegates were opposed, *and* was not adopted by the Commonwealth. *Ambition:* New Zealand wanted to establish their own empire in the south pacific and federating with Australia would've put a stop to it. So yeah, if you're going to lay down facts, lay down all of them, not the ones you feel like that make Australia look racist and New Zealand so perfect. That's why I down voted it.

Something like 1 in 5 kiwis already live in Australia. We have no problem with that, we see them as brothers. We don't see them as a 'state' of Australia, but we definitely hold them closer than any other country. Hence the Trans-Tasman agreement that allows us to live in each other's countries. The only cultural difference is that they're a bit more 'English' than us - they're much more polite and calm. The Australian sense of humour is a lot ruder and being a bigger country, our post-colonial identity is a lot more developed and independent.

@dracovenit9549
@dracovenit9549 8 лет назад
Some people are beginning to use the term "white", I set them straight whenever I have the chance. White is meaningless to us. It does not refer to a cultural group, to practices, or even to genetics. In NZ when I refer to white people (which is very rarely) I'm talking about White Americans. As it has some meaning in the American context as they have created the dichotomy which has meaning. I'm not white, your not white. If anything we are Pakeha, or British NZers, or European NZers (or even better we are the suburb of AK we come from) we are not "white". That is as foolish as telling a Maori he is "black". Calling pakeha white and maori and pacifika black is meaningless. We are not Americans, or Australians. We do not put emphasis on that dichotomy. That is the real point to be made. "Black might not used as much as they are not black"... that is only part of it. The other part is that it is not part of our traditional NZ culture. Also notice that it is SJW's and privileged young adults who use the term white along with ignorant people who identify as "black"... this is due to their attachment to American culture and complete dissociation with NZ culture. They don't even know who they are, so they consider themselves white or non-white, rather than NZer and the multiple races and cultures which formed them. "Black" and "white" are the opposite of power words in NZ, in fact they strip NZers of their culture and place in the world. Unlike in the US where it affirms and divides people alike.
@hazz569
@hazz569 8 лет назад
I think your reading far too much into this. "Im not white, your not white." I'm fairly certain the color of my skin is white. Your trying to attach some sort of cultural thing to words that simply describe what the colour of a persons skin is. You also seem to think theres some vast difference between NZ and American culture. We're actually very similar to Americans whether we like it or not. The UK, US, Australia, NZ and Canada are 90% the same in terms of culture. The other 10% is the slight uniqueness each country has.
@dracovenit9549
@dracovenit9549 8 лет назад
Is your skin actually white? I would doubt that. White does have meaning to Americans, it does imply culture and a wide range of assumptions. When they say white they are speaking of a race-cultural construct which is inseparable. They have a long history of black vs white. We do not. We have pakeha vs tangata whenua, however not in the extreme dichotomy of that in the US. In NZ you can be Maori without having dark skin, in NZ you can be a "kiwi" with any skin colour. I've seen SJWs and fascists alike use the term "white" in NZ, and I check them when I can. We should not succumb to the discourse of other nations. We are our own country, those with British and European ancestry are not white, just like Maori are not Black. Maori who identify as "black" are a sign of American Neo-colonialism, or rather cultural pollution. To say you are white is to wash away all your ancestors cultures and assume the American construct of "white".

***** It is nice that you do not see white or black as being a cultural thing. As Americans and some others do actually see black and white to actually mean something other than skin colour, they think it means something about their culture. I'm not trying to put some sort of "cultural thing" with race ("skin colour"), I'm trying to tell you that people do assume "cultural things" about race. That is my issue with the terms. Who do you hear using the term "white"? What sorts of people? If you could choose one which would you select to represent your identity: "white", "pakeha", "british NZer", "NZer" or "european NZer"?

Australia and New Zealand are similar, we originate from the same mother country and have fought together in nearly every conflict we enter. However Australia is considerably larger with over 23 million people, the largest military in the region, international influence, the 12th largest economy in the world and is considered a continent as well as a country. New Zealand however has a population of over 4 million, a very small military (depends on Australia and America), next to no international influence, a small economy and a small land area. You can debate all you want but Australia is clearly several levels above New Zealand.

Assuming you measure a nation's worth by its power then sure you're right, Australia is clearly several levels above New Zealand.

Andrew Economous So does Australia, we just have both quantity and quality if it comes to a fight with New Zealand. A good economy, but small when compared to Australia and other world powers. You are well liked but you have little influence.

Andrew Economous A lot through friendship and not Xenophobia? WTF are you trying to say? The Australian army is one of the most advanced and highly trained in the world. Whaaaat? well good I won't ever have to talk to you again because our desert is pretty much remaining the same. I think you have Australia and Sub-Saharan Africa mixed up there....Oh and Australian education is better, we learn geography.

+Andrew Economous Dude the Australian army is the best trained military in the world, and NZ gets similar military training to us here in Australia because our countries fight together in wars and due to the ANZAC treaty

What Captain Russell didn't mention in his reasons for NZ not wanting to be part of an Australasian federation is that many New Zealanders looked down on Australians because of our convict origins.

We went to NZ one month ago. In Auckland, everyone we saw was either Asian or Indian. travelling around, all small business was owned by Indians or Chinese. The Auckland harbour front was a disgrace. Petrol on the South Island was $2.40 almost double Australian prices. Australia deported 2800 Kiwis in the past two years and soon both countries may decide against open entry, and visas will be required, this will be due to refugees using NZ as a back door to OZ.
