The history of edition changes is varied, and it must leave the designers of Dungeons & Dragons (2024) feeling nervous about the success of their product. Why the odd name, then? Let's discuss the history of edition changes, why we are keeping "5th edition" in the title, and why adding 5.5e will never happen.

Hey, guys! I just wanted to clarify a point in the video that I did not explain well. ๐Ÿ™‚ The title of this video does not reflect my support for "D&D 5th Edtion 2024" as the official title, as stated in the video. Personally, I enjoy the numbering convention of 6th Edition and wish this new core ruleset followed it. However, my personal belief does not supersede the reasons listed in the video that I believe WOTC has for not naming it that. We are free to disagree and agree, but my opinion is: I wish it were 6th Edition, but naming it something related to 5th Edition makes a lot of sense - although I wish it were something less wordy.
@accountid9681
@accountid9681 ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
the .5 numbering system was already introduced with 3.5, using anything other than that would be unnecessarily confusing. It's 5.1, 5.5, or 5.24. Pick one.
@Antdevamp
@Antdevamp ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
This new 12th Edition of D&D will reveal many things to us. In September, we learn.
@bl00dywelld0ne
@bl00dywelld0ne ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
The only thing WotC has done with changing up the naming convention is sow a lot of confusion. Players are going to end up shortening what they call the edition, so it's going to be D&D 5.5, D&D '24, or something similar. New players are going to start thinking that this new edition is the 24th edition and be really confused. Also, the title 'One D&D' only got changed after the OLG fiasco, and was probably done to disassociate the edition from the debacle.
@ValinusAeverie
@ValinusAeverie ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
If im not mistaken 3.5 was originally refered to as "revised" and the 3.5 was only embraced because thats what the community called it. I don't know for certain what the community will call this rules revision, but 5.5 is probably the main contender because despite the assertion that it's "clunky" its honestly a rather convenient shorthand compared to "5e 2024".
@TheDelver
@TheDelver ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Honestly, I would love something like "Revised D&D 5th Edition" as the official title and 5.5e as the shorthand. Its simple, clear, and effective. Someone ought to get you on the design team! Also, the covers for 3.5 seem to refer to it as "v3.5," but that may have been a later change.
@ValinusAeverie
@ValinusAeverie ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
@@TheDelver So in the case of 3.5, it started as an internal name, which supposedly wasn't originally intended to be the official name of the revision, but as I understand it that name leaked onto hobbiest forms and it became popular in the community. In the end both Revised 3rd Edition and 3.5 were used as the D&D community had lached onto it. I suspect that's part of the reason why they've switched to using code names like "D&D Next" and "One D&D". In regards to officially calling it "Revised 5th Edition" and calling it "5.5e" as a short hand that is probably what will happen. That being said at this point other shorthands like "R5e" are still potential contenders I've seen. It's just 5.5e seems like the most likely one so far.

@thactotum
@thactotum ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
5.5 is clunky, so we're going with 5e 2024...? The One was because they are trying to create an evergreen core that they don't have to fiddle with, and just hang new things from. you suggest it's not a different enough to be 6e... but 2014 fighters are screwed, subclass selection is at different levels, the magic system is different, smite doesn't work in the same way between what we are currently doing vs the new approach. Exhaustion, feats, backgrounds, heritages... you honestly think the difference between 2014 and 2024 is not as big as between 1e and 2e or 3e and 3.5?
@TheDelver
@TheDelver ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I agree that D&D 5th Edition 2024 is also wordy and clunky. This new core ruleset is as different as AD&D to 2nd Edition; and much more than 3rd Edition to 3.5. The issue is not that it warrants the change, but that WOTC won't name it 6th Edition to avoid leaving behind their casual audience.
@IcarusGames
@IcarusGames ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Hey, at least Battlefield 1 (incredible game, BTW) was about WWI so it made sense! I'll be calling it 5e24 for brevity, but I am frustrated that its going to be really important to clarify which book you are talking about going forward because they are quite different, even though the core game engine is the same. I'm also in the camp of being glad for the "nerf" to paladins, honestly. My favourite broken-not-broken way to play BG3 was to respec the entire party into paladins and just CRUSH the entire game, regardless of difficulty.
@wisey105
@wisey105 ะœะตััั† ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I love Paladins. I'm pretty OK with the change. Is smite nerfed a bit, yes. But, Paladins got some good things too. Lay on Hands as a bonus action and can be used to harm undead is a pretty big buff. Being able to attack AND heal for a large amount on the same turn is really good. I also like getting earlier spell casting and always having Find Steed prepared.

Not gonna delve into how many things are there that I disagree about this video. All I'm gonna say is there's nothing about this "new" edition to warrant or justify a $180 three-rule-book purchase. Their strategy seems to be driving away the sensible customers so that they could rip off the people who doesn't know any better.

The Multiple Books situation doesnโ€™t go away, specifically because of all the explicit Backward Compatibility callouts โ€œhereโ€™s what to do if youโ€™re taking a race/subclass/background from another bookโ€ all over this book. Even in this book, the guidance is that you only HAVE to use a race/subclass/class feature/background/etc. from this book IF the thing you want was reprinted here. Otherwise, if something wasnโ€™t reprinted here, you can use the old one. Beyond that, weโ€™ve already heard from CP and JC that there will be more in the future, including a new Artificer thatโ€™s already in the works.

I'm happy about the new edition, but will be playing both editions simultaneously until everyone has access to the new rules. We play a lot, so the $180 cost is nothing when we consider the enjoyment my friends & I will get out of it. Note: The standard setting will still be Forgotten Realms - Greyhawk is just a worldbuilding example in the new DMG.

Backwards compatibility is an illusion. Everyone likes it, but no one uses it. Its like when a new video console gets announced. Everyone demands to be able to play their old games but when the consoles.come out, they want to play the new games on their new system. Truth is, a year from now, no group will be using the 2014 editiom and anyone that doesnt have the 2024 book will burrow a copy from someone at the table that does.

Well it took our group 5 years or so to try 5e. It will probably take that to change again. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s backwards compatible. Not to mention what WotC has done in the past 2 years, I wonโ€™t support them. Iโ€™ll need to get the books second hand if at all. Good video

I have been Calling 5.24 or DD24. Some people still call it D&DOne. Whatever it is called, it is going to need work. Sounds just as unfinished as 2014 5E was, and has a bunch of rules that will be ignored by most tables i am have talked to.

Other game systems have new editions that are still using the same mechanics. There is no reason to not call it 6e other than marketing. By not numbering, they put them selves in a corner when a new edition does need to be made.

There is a ton of changes in this update (from what Iโ€™m hearing) It is a 5.5. Or itโ€™s a new edition. Call it what it is. But, bigger issue, why are people still supporting WOTC? I canโ€™t respect anyone who is moving over to this new edition and continues to support WOTC after everything. It just blows my mind. Try out any of the other thousands of RPGs out there, or, if you canโ€™t live without your branded D&D, just keep playing 5th edition. Stop supporting this awful company.
