The Boss SD1 is an amazing overdrive pedal, but you don't see it on as many peoples pedalboards as some other overdrive pedals.

It IS loved, and everyone had one in the 80s and 90s. And then the boutique hipsters came along and decided that Boss wasn’t good enough, even though a lot of the boutique companies started out by modding Boss pedals.

Probably one of the best overdrive pedals ever. Especially if you like vintage tones. Use it with tube amp, SS amp, processors, different other pedals...whatever. The result is always impressive. But it has one problem to become more popular, it is a cheap affordable pedal.

I agree with you the SD1 is my all time favourite pedal. I have always had one on my board since the early 90's. It sounds so good, I prefer the asymmetrical clipping. I have never owned a tube screamer either, lol. I recently picked up a 40th anniversary sd1 which is totally black, it looks good. Great video Mike, Cheers!👍

I just picked up my very first Boss SD-1 I love it so much. I owned an 808 tube screamer when I was a kid, but it did not suit the music I was playing at the time. So I traded it to my buddy and ended up with a fulltone full drive 2 the original blue one. And that was my main overdrive for a long time. Ever since then I have always had TS style overdrives. Great video by the way.

I actually got one of these beasts a few months back because my bassist friend recommended me it for re-amping sessions. I use it mostly with my Digitech Trio+ Band Creator because the stock sounds of the looper aren't the best and they also lack gain for rock tones. I love the dynamic overdrive sound of this pedal and it looks cool

Two weeks ago I gifted myself a Blackstar Mk II amp and - after some research - the Boss SD-1. I never had the intention before to get into pedals, but now I thought, if I get a tube amp, I perhaps should get a pedal, too. Mostly as a boost for solos. Boy, am I glad to have it! The sounds I can create with the pedal are so good, and in combination with the tone and volume knobs an the guitar and of course the amp, the possibilities are limitless. The amp is great, but without this pedal, I would be missing out on so much fun. I am really happy that I made that purchase and € 79,-is very reasonable.

THis was my first pedal ever based on the Boss audio samples you could hear back in the day at stores. Back then I did not have a tube amp or did not know how to tweak eq so I failed :( but recently I have an amp that sounds decent and finally I was able to use this properly. I just set my amp for a crunchy rhythm then I engage the SD-1 if I need more gain and sustain without a big jump in volume. But certainly you can also get a nice crunch rythm sound out of this, this is a hard rock sound in my opinion.
@hemmelight

I paid $82.00 for my SD-1 in 1985. I toured the US in 87-88. I pushed a Marshall JCM 800 100 watt stack with it. Today I’ve owned a SD-1 Waza Craft version for about the last 7 years and I still love this circuit after all these years. As for the TS/SD-1 saga. Both are great, but honestly I use them both very differently. But if I had to choose one, it would be the SD-1W without pause. The reason for this is the asymmetrical clipping that the SD1 has. It’s just more natural and amp sounding.

Hey man, I'd love to get your opinion on this pedal. I have an Orange Rockerverb MKii, which is voiced to push the lower mids. It's a great sounding amp, but depending on the mix, it runs the chance of getting lost, so I've been looking for a pedal that can push the upper mids a bit while adding some saturation and aggression (I'm more of a metal player). My Boss BD-2 (Blues Driver) sounds crap with the amp, cause it's a very warm sounding pedal which doesn't really match were with an already very warm amp, and have been using my Boss GE-7 eq pedal to boss some upper mid frequencies in the loop, but it just sounds a bit honky or something when I do that, so I've been looking for something that can drive the front end of the amp. I'm kind of split between the Maxon OD808 (basically a TS9), and this Boss SD-1. I know that the 808 pushes the mids and adds saturations, but from some clips, it sounds like the SD-1 pushes the high mids slightly more, and is a bit more open sounding and less compressed... is that true, or am I just hearing things? Do you think one would brighten a dark sounding amp more than the other? Cheers.

I have SD-1 and Ibanez TS-mini also, they're roughly the same price. I wanted to like SD-1 bcs "everybody's got tubescreamer" but with my amp, TS-mini just sounds better. SD-1 offers more gain, which is a bit of an advantage but use it as a boost of high gain amp so that's not really a concern to me. With SD-1 it sounds "flatter, more artificial, uninspiring..." :D I don't know, TS-mini has more balls (without being bassy). With clean channel, I like ibanez more for one notes/solos and SD-1 for chords (it seem to me it has "better notes separation", maybe it has more high mids, i don't know). To sum it up - I think it depends on a guitar and an amp but if you don't want to pay more for tubescreamer, give tubescreamer mini a chance, it's more badass than it looks :) PS: TS808 and SD-1 are definitely not "transparent"

TS pedals are overrated, personally, I have had a BD-2 and never looked elsewhere. Never fell into the SRV fan camp, hot texas pickups, and Hendrix recycled riffs, nah. With that said the SD-1 and OD-3 are truly great pedals. Love that you mentioned Prince's boss rig. He was a beast with modest-priced pedals !!

They make literally 10’s of thousands of different od pedals but if you are being honest every sound you could want comes from 1 or a combo of 6 different pedals. Rat, Tubescreamer, Ds 1, sd1, big muff and a fuzz face. Every other pedal you get will be a variation of these 6. JUST BUY ONE OF THESE 6 and you’ll be set. Ironically, you can get any of the 6 used for under 100 a piece.

I own one, It's great at what it does, a very smooth drive, it's just not to my taste or style, I've tried to like it, I put it back on my board from time to time just to check. I prefer a crunchy blues sound, the sd1 is the opposite of that.

I had one for years, before it quit on me, but never found a good use for it. Maybe because I play mainly blues, and the TS9 works great for that. Also, I mostly play through solid state amps, and I thought it sounded harsh through those. It probably sounds better through tube/valve amps.

This pedal never comes off my pedal board. I've added other overdrives over the years, but I use the Boss SD-1 every day It's that good. Your $250 overdrive doesn't sound better. Sorry that you paid that much. Get a Boss SD-1 and be happy.

The funny thing is the Ibanez TubeScreamer actually is a knockoff of the Boss OD-1, to which they added a tone control, removed one of the clipping diodes (at the time, Boss had a patent on asymmetric clipping), and slightly tweaked cap/resistor values. So in order to keep up with the competition Boss had to come up with the SD-1, basically being an evolution of the OD-1 with an added tone control. Then we forget history due to gear hype and we get it all backwards. 😂

Ooh I didn’t know that!! It’s funny so many company’s copy each other. Fender copied the fender bassman, but couldn’t get the same tubes, so got EL34’s and the plexi was born. But it’s basically a fender bassman!

I hate the green pedals. Always have done after many tries but each to their own. My go to is a soul food which is kind of a klon type drive. This sd1 sounds great here though. And the Tele in particular sounds sweet with it. Never tried one but will ! Oh man Phil hilbourne tutorials..Them were the days!.

Okay pedal but I’m not thrilled with the buffer in it. I like my east river drive and prefer it over the sd-1. But yeah besides the buffer it’s a good cheap od.

Love the SD-1 and OD-1. They’re not « transparent », and they don’t have a flat/neutral EQ curve, but they’re more natural - i.e. valve-sounding - than the BD-2 or OD-3, both of which I consider overrated. The SD-1 is also just as good as the Ibanez TS9 for half the price.
