Istanbul (previously Constantinople) has served as the capital of numerous kingdoms and empires throughout its nearly 3,000-year history, and yet today the Republic of Turkey's capital is in the city of Ankara. How did that happen?

Next: Why isn't Sydney the capital of Australia
@AdamSmith-gs2dv
@AdamSmith-gs2dv 4 года назад
Melbourne and Sydney kept arguing over which city should be the capital and eventually agreed that they would build a new city between them (Canberra) to be the capital. This is also kind of why Washington DC is the capital of the US, it was a compromise location between the northern and southern states.

Other reasons: -It is too close to western (thracian) borders of Turkey. Russians sieged Istanbul in 1878 and Bulgarians came close at 1912. It was occupied easily by allies in 1918 etc. etc. -After losing balkans in first balkan war and arabian peninsula in WW1 all Turkey got was Anatolia and Ankara is in the center of it. -Constantinople/İstanbul was a pretty cosmopolitan city in the early 20s. Nearly %30 percent of city's population consisted of Non-Turkic ethnicities (Greeks, Armenians etc.) Ataturk and other leaders of Turkish war of Indepence were largely nationalists. So they prefered a homogeneous city as the capital over a cosmopolitan one.

I have to say, Turkish geography/map is so beautiful, I dont know why but the shape is so interessant, Turkey spreads perfectly on the anatolia peninsula leaving a part anchored in Asia as if leaning over the middle east, fitting like a spoon over a cake, while the other part facing the Sea surrounded by thousands of islands that Turkey politely ignore picking up a tinny portion of Europe as if it was claiming a piece of the old world, greetings from Brazil.

Couple of things I have to mention: National movement had to fight against newly founded Armenian state in the east with the forces loyal to General Kazim Karabekir, and Armenia was reduced to it's former territories before the treaty of Sevres. While the conditions of treaty of Alexandropol was being discussed, Armenia was invaded by Soviet Russia, with the forces of Grigoriy Ordzhonikidze. Soviets allied with Turkey, but not because they loved us dearly, because of their expansionist policies. In the south, irregular forces loyal to the tribal leaders from the region (with the aid of pro-independence Turkish generals) fought against France in a guerrilla warfare fashion and France had to withdraw. Most notable confrontations are Battles of Antep and Kanligecit. Largest theater of the war was indeed the western front against Greece, backed up by UK. But claiming that no other conflict happened elsewhere is simply not true. We even got to the brink of war against UK over Konstantiniyye. (Chanak crisis) Other than that, great video. Ankara at the time was nothing but a village and leaders knew that we needed a fresh start, a complete reset for everything that had ever been done. What is more suitable for a new work than an almost completely blank slate?

Do spend 2 minutes to read this heart melting historical answer by a great scholar A reply by Huzoor Mujahid e Ahle Sunnat, Hadrat Allaamah Syed Shah Turaab al Haq Qadiri(May Allah Almighty preserve him) Question: Shah sahib Qibla, I wanted to know what is the hukm for Sunnis, when they go for Hajj and Umrah,with regards to performing Salah behind the wahabi najdi imams ? Answer: The Salah of a Sunni is only valid behind a Sunni Imam, and not behind followers of any other sect. Before the saudis took over, the Ottomans ( including Turks, Arabs and Kurds also) were in power. They made such arrangements that four Salah congregations would take place, four musallahs were put down on all four sides of the Kaaba. Hanbali, Maaliki, Hanafi, and Shafi'ee, each follower of each Imam would perform Salah behind his Imam, therefore there was no issue whatsoever. The Ottomans era of rule was the rule of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah.When the saudis came they took the rule from the turks, aal saud and aal shaykh took over the rule of the country.aal saud are the worldly kings which namely control today, and they went as far as naming the Hijaz country by this name also (saudi Arabia) after taking the country by force. The aal shaykh are the children of Muhammad ibn abdul Wahhaab. Before attacking the Sacred Haram aal saud and aal shaykh made an agreement that, they would jointly attack Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah, and when our government is established, aal saud will take over the kingdom and rulership, and aale shaykh will deal with all the religious affairs. The Imams will be theirs, qaadis, madrassas, muhadiths, muftis etc will all be supplied by aal shaykh. After this agreement, they attacked Madinah Munawwarah and Makkah Mukarramah. A few years ago, the Saudi government celebrated their anniversary. King Abdul Aziz was shown on tv riding on a horse within Haram Shareef, slaughtering and murdering people with his sword. Who were these people being unlawfully murdered ? Had the jews suddenly appeared inside the HaramShareef ? No, these were Sunnies being murdered. The Imam of Masjid Nabawi Shareef was slaughtered whilst being on the musallah by a sword. Only 200 people attacked Madinah Shareef. When I first visited MadinahShareef in the year 1977, I stayed with Huzoor Qutb e Madinah Shaykh Zia al Deen Alaihirrahmah. I stayed with them for 40 days, I would hear quietly from them about the history. Huzur Qutb e Madinah told me, only 200 people from the najdi army attacked Madinah Shareef. The Ottomans were such staunch and respectful Sunnies that when they were attacked, they surrendered and laid down their weapons by saying that they will not allow blood to be spilt within the sacred court of the Most Beloved Sall Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, they allowed themselves to be slaughtered and attained martyrdom without defending themselves, and the same was the case in Makkah Shareef. They took over the country in this way. People forget everything! The first thing they did after taking over, was that they bulldozed Jannah al Baqee Shareef. They dug up the graves of the blessed personalities in Jannah al-Baqee Shareef, dug up the graves of Ahle Bait e Kiraam. The Most beautiful Mazaar in Jannah al Baqee Shareef was that of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani Radi Allahu Anhu. They took it apart stone by stone and flattened it into the ground. Then they demolished the Mazaars of Jannah al Maala shareef. They demolished all these Mazaars, and the Najdis of that time would say, The green dome is the biggest idol, this needs to be destroyed, MaazAllah, But they did not succeed in this evil plan. This took place in the time of Maulana Muhammad Ali Johar, Molana Abdul Hamid Badayuni, Molana Abdul Aleem sidiqui. There was a journalist by the name Riyaaz al Hasan or Riyaaz al Hussain, whose interview was published approximately 30 years ago in the newspaper Jang. He was a member of the delegates that went to Saudi Arabia to protest. The Saudi government promised them at that time that they would rebuild these mazaars. The small stones that you see today at the Mazaars of the ahle Baqee, which enable us to recognise the maqaam of Sayyidah Fatimah Radi Allahu Anha or Sayyiduna Imam Hasan RadiAllahu Anhu, is due to those people who campaigned at that time. Even till today they have not fulfilled their promise of reconstructing the Mazaars. The Tomb of Sayyidah Khadeejah al-Kubraa Radi Allahu Anhaa was beautifully built in the Jannah al Maala graveyard, come and I will show you all those pictures taken prior to this demolition. Now, you tell me, that those evil people who slaughtered thousands of Sunni Muslims, forcefully took over Makkah Shareef and Madinah Shareef. Have you all forgotten everything? And you still dare ask, Why can’t we pray behind them? We do not pray behind them because they consider us, the people of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah,as mushriks. Now, you tell me, wouldyou pray behind someone who calls you a mushrik? This is why we do not pray behind them! If anyone wants to study this history, then study the book of Allaamah Abdul Qayuum, Tareekh Najd o Hijaaz. If you want to research who was Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhaab search on internet for the book confessions of a british spy. Who was this Hempher? there were seven spies who broke up the Turkish rulership, six of them were men and there was one woman. They went to Istanbul and caused havoc. Hempher, studied the Darse Nizaamicourse with a Shaykh in Istanbul, and studied the Arabic language. He would say, Whenever someone suspected me of spying, I would begin speaking in Arabic. He has completely exposed Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhaab in this book, confessions of a british spy which has been published in Arabic from Kuwait, and also from London, from where these spies belonged. It discloses everything regarding Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhaab and how he misled him, debated with himand convinced him that alcohol is not haram, and then he persuaded him that Mutah is also halal, ultimately he made him form a temporary marriage with the female British spy. He would praise and flatter him by saying, You are a great servant of Allah. You are like Sayyiduna Umar Farooq, and Allah Almighty has destined great things for you. If you do not believe me, then read this book by the british spy. The book is available openly on the internet. This is the reality of the ale shaykh and aale Saud. Today the simple Muslims think that because this is Haram Shareef, the Imam here will also be someone verypious and god fearing. We do not pray behind these people because oftheir evil beliefs and their past actions as well as their beliefs regarding us. Translated from the urdu audio by Faqeer Mohammed Shakeel Qadiri Ridawi Rabi al Awwal Shareef 2014 Wahhabism was born in the middle of the 18th century in the sleepy desert-village of Dir’iyyah located in the ArabianPeninsula’s central region of Najd ( real name for the land now called Riyadh ). The Wahhabi sect derives its name from the name of its founder Mohammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhab. Namaz behind bad aqeeda gustakhe Rasool wahabi kafir wa murtad is not allowed Hempher Wikipedia: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memoirs_of_Mr._Hempher,_The_British_Spy_to_the_Middle_East Book Tarikh e Najd O Hijaz: www.nafseislam.com/en/Literature/Urdu/Books/TareekheNajdoHijaz/TareekheNajdoHijaz.htm

I think the most logical choice for a capital of West Germany would have been Hannover, due to several historical reasons, but maybe it was too close to the East German border. Bonn seems to have neen specifically selected because it was far away from East Germany, wasn't as industrialized as many larger cities on the Rhine, wasn't affected by WW2, had beautiful historical buildings, and had some historical significance as the capital of the electorate of Cologne and an important city in the Rhineland.

Probably 100s of year of Turkish colonialism. Probably because Turkey colonized there city and forcibly remove them from their native lands. The British left India, they didn't rename an Indian city and stay forever.
@alucardwhitehair
@alucardwhitehair 4 года назад
Jessica Josephs A bit misleading. Ottomans didn’t “colonize” Constantinople in the same way Britain colonized India. Just call it what it was: conquest and expulsion of minorities. Many cities throughout history have been captured this way, Lithuanians or Poles don’t worry about their now renamed Russian cities. The true answer to why Greece cares is because both Greece and Turkey have massively nationalist populations that focus on irredentism as part of their identity.

Very interesting video. Such an interesting story. Istanbul is amazing, but Ankara’s greatest advantage was its incredibly inhospitable location. The problem is that it is not a great location now. (Freezing in winter. Fiendishly hot in Summer.) I suspect many in Turkey would actually rather like to move it somewhere nicer. Izmir would be particularly nice! :-)
@Torsengi
@Torsengi 4 года назад
What an uneducated and embaressing comment. Average temperature of ankara is 11. It barely reaches -10 and it barely reaches 30 in summer, which isnt overly different from izmir just a bit cooler. Also calling ankara inhospitable is even more ignorant since ankara is a prehistoric settlement with 1000s of years of history and second biggers agricultural producer city in turkey after konya. Its fertile, it has a decent weather, its in the center of everything.

Ok, before watching this video I think the reason why Istanbul isn't the capital is because that part of the country is overdeveloped. The Turks moved the capital to a more central location so that in that way, development gets spread evenly to different parts of the country. I think this is more or less the reason why the Brazilian capital is Brasilia (as opposed to Rio de Janeiro), while the Russia's is Moscow (instead of St. Petersburg)
@Dear_Mr._Isaiah_Deringer
@Dear_Mr._Isaiah_Deringer 4 года назад
Not really. Also the Russia part isn't accurate either. Moscow was and is larger than St. Petersburg. Indeed St. Petersburg was established much later to replace Moscow as the capital, which was ultimately reverted again. And as far as i remember in the time St. Petersburg was the capital it never had a greater population than Moscow.

You are right. It's not the only reason of course, what's been said in the video is correct too. Anatolia was abandoned for a long time, it wasn't developed at all. (Still, when you compare it to the big cities of Turkey, they lack behind a lot.) Ankara provided a good chance for Anatolia to develop. It is safer than Istanbul from a foreign invasion, it represents the Republic, not the Empire. It represents the Anatolia and leads the way.

I'm sorry. That's a very, very incomplete answer you gave there. The real, tangible reason for Ankara becoming the capital is its defensible position from foreign naval powers. It's to prevent what had already happened to Istanbul's imperial government at the time and secure the new government against any further gunship diplomacy that'd threaten its sovereignty. So, the first and foremost reason is security. Then comes its central location. And at some point down the line comes "oh we don't want to be seen as the continuation of the empire" which, did ultimately fail, sadly.

One of the reasons why it is not a capital city is that Istanbul, which is already crowded, is not wanted to become a more crowded and uninhabitable city as it is the capital city.

When this city was founded its name was Constantinople, which means in greek "the city of Constantine". Polis = city in greek. Have you ever wondered where the word POLICE has come from? From the greek word ΠΟΛΙΣ. And in Greece we say that Istanbul has come from the greek words εις την πολι (is tin poli) which became Istanbul. Can anyone tell me what Istanbul mean in Turkish? Or what is the Turkish side of why it is named Istanbul?

@@zelpzhx1177 Most probably because Hamburg and Munich are very close cities to the border with Eastern Germany. So I would say because they wanted the capital as far from the Warsaw Pact as possible. The reason for Bonn would be most probably because it was not that significant and was in good shape after WW2. Reunification was the goal from day 1 and capital on an important city would look like a permanent capital rather than a temporary one. Berlin was still seen as the capital for the reunified Germany. Also for a more subjective point. The cities that applied for being the capital were Bonn, Frankfurt am Main, Kassel and Stuttgart. Kassel was too close to the border with East Germany, Stuttgart couldn't affort to be capital so it was really a race between Frankfurt and Bonn. The parliament decided on Bonn in the end with mostly due to convincing of chancellor Adenauer.

One of the most important reasons was to have the capital in the middle of the country instead of on the other side of the Bosphoros like Istanbul would be without any connection to the mainland other than bridges. In case of another war losing Istanbul was more likely to happen than losing Ankara.

The Turks had it much worse than the Germans (with their fancy Treaty of Versailles) what with the division of territory after the Great War.
@ppaaccoojrf
@ppaaccoojrf 4 года назад
On the contrary. The occupation zones were only temporary and Turkey was only due to lose Smyrna and Eastern Thrace to Greece, the Levant and Arabian peninsula to French and British mandates, and the Eastern border (with Armenia) was to be determined. In the end, none of that happened aside from losing what was basically occupied territory in the Levant and Arabia to newly formed Arabic countries.

@@biliminsrlar5752 The partitions after WWI largely happened over ethnic lines. Austria and Hungary were extremely reduced in size because large parts of their territory were inhabited by other ethnicities. Same thing for the Turkish Near East. However, Turks managed to keep lots of contested territories on the outskirts of Anatolia because they won the so-called war of independence. They lost more land because they held more, but an equally harsh treatment would have had them relinquish most (if not all) of their European territory and a large portion of Eastern Anatolia (that would have probably gone towards Armenia and perhaps a newly established Kurdistan). Germany lost the least, but for practical purposes. The only real option the allies had with Germany was breaking it up into constituents (i.e. Prussia, Bavaria, etc.), which was argued back and forth and in the end deemed not worth it. In retrospect perhaps it would have been.
@ppaaccoojrf
@ppaaccoojrf 4 года назад
@@justiny.3482 Not entirely correct. The countries weren't invaded, they were militarily occupied at war and then ceded. The Ottoman Empire was just as much a foreign imperial power to the Arabs of the Levant and Arabia as the Brits or the French (if perhaps less foreign). The Brits and the French established protectorates in the area, but frankly, what else could they really accomplish? There was a power vacuum after dissolving the Ottoman Empire, and not filling it would have just plunged the countries into Anarchy and civil war (which is what the Americans accomplished 60 years later). British and French exploitation and border redrawing is indeed a factor to all of this, but it's inaccurate to assume that there were countries there that could be invaded and colonized (like in the rest of Asia for example) because there simply was none. Just people being "liberated" (voluntarily or otherwise) from the Empire that had ruled them for the last 400 years or so.

It was moved to DC to appeal to southern states. New York used to be the capital, but it was moved to Washington DC because it is the midpoint between the North and South. The District of Columbia was created out of Maryland (a northern state) and Virginia (a southern state) to appeal to both sides and not look like the government favored the North over the South. That's also why George Washington was chosen to lead the American revolution, rather than a Northerner, since most people who wanted independence were from the north. It made the south invested in independence.

Interesting Story about the French: So apperantly a French commander and about 1000 men with him were going through a mountain pass. Turks decided to raid them , but they only had 50 or so men. So they took a whole village and made them say the classic "Allah Allah". French were overwhelmed and the commander wrote a letter to "the great Turkish commander and his army" and surrendered. When they realised only about 50 men were armed and rest were unarmed , it was too late.
