That won't be the solution but it would definitely help because you'll feel productive or that you've achieved something you've regard impossible for a long time. the sense of achievement helps
Sadly governments don’t run the country. Huge corporations, banks and military industrial complex do. If you go against them you will end up like JFK...
Medications for depression have those suicide warnings because people who are very depressed have no energy to do anything, but when given appropriate medication they feel more motivated in general. So if someone with was/is suicidal they potentially have the energy and functioning with medication to carry out their plan. It's not that depression meds make suicidal ideation worse.
@@vitas4783 you have misguided information. The pharmaceuticals aren't the problem. It is indeed the insurance companies. Reason why most of those doctor's deny insurance is because insurance companies deny claims. So then the Doctor has a bill with no one to pay out. So now the pt. has the bill and who knows how long that will take to get paid back. Every medical issue stems from insurance companies sleazing their way out of claims.
practice makes a suicider perfect🙃 if at first one doesn't succeed... one shouldn't give up¡ but rather TRY AGAIN and again and again and again .... till one succeeds🖒😆
Missmethinksalot1 if you have netflix, you should watch it on there. giving the show views on netflix (even though we don't have access that data) is what one of the ways netflix determines if the show will continue on. I watch on there first, and then come here for the comments. double work, but it's worth it, if it helps the shows :)
They have free services so I do not know why people are so lost about it....People choose to go through mental health but can google everything else other then getting help.
@@GHustle4 I partially agree with you. Although there’s plenty of free services there are instances where people can’t go to certain therapists because their personal experiences may be unfamiliar (or viewed as wrong) to them.
Or is the future. Real info coming to us in dense bytes to watch. Analysis backed with proof. Shout out to the researchers on the show who really make the show.
Much as this was meant to make me laugh, it made me cry... Because this is all far too real. We live in an age that doesn't serve the people. It serves the few.
Thank you so much for covering mental illness, especially in the Asian community. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder a couple months back. When I told my Indian parents about it, they told me that depression isn't real and that I need to stop making excuses. This is a real problem that we need to combat together.
@Raniya Abdul Qadir Just like Indians came into the conversation. You didn't ask when and how Asians came into the conversation? Stereotypes exist. Not 100% of times but for 70-75% of times its true.
Mustafa Alam Well yes, praying Salah is an absolute factor of stress relief. There are 2 types of depression. Chemical imbalances, which come from the brain directly, and societal, or existential reasons for depression. That’s why fools like you who’re oblivious to the spirituality factor of reliving depression indulge yourself in materialistic superficial things which help you distract yourselves from the basic life questions. No wonder celebrities kill themselves day in and out. No wonder an established country like the USA had 45000 suicides annually even though their living standards literally put them into the ranks of elite if compared to the rest of the world. No wonder from 1999 to 2019 30% increase has been discovered of suicides in USA alone. No wonder the drug intake is prominent in countries like the USA where you’re supposedly living the good life. No wonder celebrities numb themselves with drugs and alcohol constantly to escape from reality, although they have the money, fame, family etc. Imbeciles like you live a miserable life believing a simple pill will fix your depression. Lets see how that works out for you dirty maggot

Can I get an Existential BigMac, a side of Nihilistic Fries, and a Heat Death Coke? And for a Happy Meal toy, do you have any of the Fredrich Nietzeiche toys left?
Not a bad explanation for why obesity is up there- it's better to get proper treatment for your mental health problems....but you don't have to deal with United to get a Big Mac.
As someone who’s been receiving therapy since I was 11 years old, I can also honestly say that, sometimes, none of the therapists that your insurance covers are good matches for you. I had one who ended up making me feel worse by drudging stuff up every appointment, and a couple years ago when I moved back to Kentucky, one of only two therapists available who was covered ended up being an evangelical ideologue who got his degree from a southern baptist school. Meanwhile, a lot of stuff I need therapy for came from closed-minded Christians. When I lived in Boston, I had the opposite problem: I had a lot of therapists in my network but apparently EVERYONE in Boston had a therapist because it took me a whole year before one freed up.
They usually say, "Its all in your head or its because of your mobile phone" a friend of mine got addicted to smoking because his mental health was getting worse and worse. But Asians being Asians, nobody cared.
out of curiosity (because I don't have netflix), are the episodes posted on netflix any different than the ones posted on youtube? Like are they longer or contain other cut scenes that you don't see in the youtube episodes?
If anyone is wondering the other videos of Patriot act can be found in "Netflix is a Joke" channel here on yt. The channel is apparently composed of the comedians of netflix so it makes sense that Hasan would also be there. But idk why the sudden transfer of videos, it totally caught me off guard.
Yess Patriot Act team! Thank you for bringing more light to this topic! As a mental health professional it makes me very happy. Depression is very real, we need mental health days at our workplaces, we need better policy’s regarding insurance etc. People wonder why all these crazy things happen yet we have some of the highest depression rates in the western world. I don’t think ppl realize how much poor mental health effects, EVERYTHING ! So thank you for this as your first episode back ❤️ Much love.
Dear students, quite a lot of universities and colleges will have someone to help you out with your mental health issues for free. Please make use of those services.
@@saronwolde270 And/Or are only available a few hours a day for certain days. That means if your lucky fo catch them outside your class hours (or skip class ) to see them.
sometimes that might be questionable as well, though. it's hard to tell since things regarding universities and colleges and their public images, but sometimes they'll put you on suspension and then suddenly you'll be dropped out of college for not attending your classes. I'm not trying to scare anyone but it's a thing you should research or think about before you actually go.
abc philomath Ice Bliss is right- while a lot of universities do offer services, they often are very limited (even if you’re at a place like my alma mater where there’s a top-tier hospital right on campus with a ton of docs doing psych residency there). Wait times for a first appointment may be upwards of a month- even if a student is in crisis. Crisis-focused resources often connect students to law enforcement or non-health professsionals (RAs, deans, etc), which can exacerbate the situation. Higher ed admins also may have policies in place where they keep tabs on ill students- not for their well-being, but to keep liability off the school. Students at places like Yale and UChicago have been kicked out of school and denied the ability to return due to psychiatric emergencies- even when no laws or school policies were broken and after students had completed treatment/were well. Students should always do research on their schools’ policies and be prepared to do some serious self-advocacy (or have someone close to help advocate for them).
This sums up my experience for the last four years. Anytime I tried using insurance, there’s been roadblock after roadblock. I now pay out of pocket for a psychiatrist and a psychologist that in total costs me $450. I send the claims for out of pocket deductible but I still get road blocks; most insurances want the claims mailed in or faxed and they’re usually with another company different from your actual insurance. (EX: the insurance I’m on now works with Optum Health and I can upload claims, but it takes still forever to process.) I would love to have an insurance cover my mental health but I gave up on it ever happening. I don’t make that much money so majority of my paycheck goes to student loans, rent, utility bills and mental health. It’s nice that mental health is getting destigmatized little by little, but until real change happens, talking about it is basically a fad.
I lost my friend to suicide a couple months ago. We’re or she was only a high school junior. The school could’ve done something, but they didn’t. It’s still weird that she’s gone. I dreamed about her last night.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my brother the same way, many years ago. You'll never fully understand it, but it does get easier with time. Please take care of yourself, and reach out for support when you need it.
i've struggled with mental health all my life. it brings me genuine hope that conversations about it are becoming more and more mainstream. nobody should have to live undiagnosed and miserable, and with comprehensive healthcare reform, we might see the day nobody does.
People shouldn't have to go through the insane hassle of dealing with scammy insurance companies, be denied over and over, get sicker and sicker, AND THEN have to go through the hassle of suing them, which is something lots of people can't do to begin with. Insurance companies are unethical cesspots of capitalism.
It's 2019. People still don't talk about depression, stress and other mental issues seriously. Boomers be like : " ItS aLl In OnLy In YoUr HeAd " . We need more awareness about it.
What irks me more is that some people will just have a bad day and label it depression or use it as an excuse for their bad behavior.. which is why people don't really believe those who actually need help, those who are suffering.. 😶 Depressed people never talk about suicide openly they're hurting & hiding but lack of sense in some people just desensitizes the word.
We need more awareness, but we also need less negative repercussions if you admit you've had mental health problems in the past. People wouldn't say: "He broke his leg once, he's unfit for this work", but they say: "He was depressed/had burnout once, he's unfit for this."
I saw in a health article that severe depression is just as debilitating at terminal cancer😔 I’m starting to believe it is true and I wish I could give everyone a hug who needs it
A. L. Michael I know right... I hate it so much when older people just say that depressed people are just overreacting when the depression sometimes literally does not let them get out of bed😡 it’s pretty upsetting to hear so I sympathize a lot with people who struggle with mental health
sanders wrote the DAMN bill! NO half-measure candidates... and/or charlatan progressives (let alone corrupt corporatists) go universal, go #bernie2020! (THE solution to this episode)
Hilarious Hasan. This is refreshing! I have an anxiety disorder 😂 I love the NEP (nutrition, exercise and personal development) approach. I have a support network and a self esteem coach who knows me and I’ve been friends with for some time and we meditate together, breath and write out my feelings as well as speak and practice reverse subconscious training 💕
I’m Nigerian and if you have parents from home mental health isn’t truly talked about. Thank you so much for talking about it. As a black person a lot of us have mental health issues but we never talk about it.
This explains so much!! I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and then my therapist said that my insurance stopped payments because they didn’t see the medical necessity for me to go to a therapist
That is ridiculous. I was diagnosed with bipolar when I was 4 and have been on medication and have regular psychiatrist visits ever since. I'm 32 now. Medicine needs to be addressed and adjusted based on the severity of symptoms and you HAVE to go to a psychiatrist for that. Thankfully I'm on the low end of it so it doesn't impact my life too bad but when my mania hits it can get frustrating. If you are bipolar you need to be on some level of medicine. End of story. You have to get a psychiatrist for that medicine. Definitely appeal that denial.
From watching this I just learned I could appeal that decision (my parents didn’t know we could do that) and now we’re talking about our next steps. Sadly though I am unable to attend the doctor because the insurance told my doctors to not see me anymore
@@turkishwhiteout I too would like to join, but I still have my duty to vote for Bernie Sanders - he doesn't become the new president in 2020 I'm officially done with America and will settle for literally any first world country I can get in,
I cant even Imagine having to pay thousands of dollars for therapy and medications, or even being denied coverage. Im glad that our tax funded free healthcare in Sweden includes mental health treatment.
same i was diagnosed with MDD and need to undergo for therapy once a week for 12 weeks. imagine the bills i had to pay if my government didn't cover it (for therapy plus meds)
Thanks for covering this: my dad was bipolar and it was a tough road for our family. He was in denial about it for most of his life and didn't want to stay on treatment when he finally got it, which is a complication that strongly effects bipolar people.
18:01 - I was watching this episode on Netflix and came here just to comment how amazing the editing is and of course the episode itself was great. Thanks to Hasan and his amazing team.
It's my fav episode till date. I wanted Hasan to do an episode about mental health for so long. Hasan is one of my fav person to watch and only watching and listening to him can make my depression a lil better.
This must be the only channel on RU-vid where the graphics team gets as much praise as the host of the show does, and that praise is well deserved. See you on Emmy night!
Thank you so much for this episode. I just got a letter from my insurance company saying that my claim for therapy had been denied. I remembered watching this a while back and came here to rewatch it. I am now armed with several arguments to support my claim when I call tomorrow.
After struggling with suicidal depression for a decade, I finally got help through the county after a semi-public breakdown where I was escorted to the asylum but a police officer. It was either go peacefully or go in the back of the squad car. Since then, I've still come so close to suicide that I got as fast as texting my friends and family that I loved them, and sending my husband the password to my computer. I have a note and a list of people to contact on the desktop called READ ME. So far I'm still here, but I might be losing access to my health care, so who knows how long I'll last without medication?
This hit home for me. As someone who has OCD, it’s hard to find competent therapists to treat it. I pay $160 out of pocket to see someone who knows what they’re doing. They’re also an hour away. I’ve spent over $3k out of pocket for sessions with my therapist and my psychiatrist. I’m also a college student so funds are tight. I contacted my insurance company and they don’t consider mental health care as “essential.” They won’t reimburse me until I meet a in-network deductible (which I had to fight for because they considered my provider out of network) set at $3,000. Also, it doesn’t roll over to the next year. Thanks Anthem!
I have been having anxiety issues since late 2013, and I am still dealing with it. Not being able to afford insurance feels like a death sentence to me. State-sponsored insurance is also horribly set up. I tried getting help and all I did was get prescribed medications and see a therapist every 2 weeks. After my insurance ended, I received emails from both the therapist and the psychiatrists office. They had told me they could no longer see me due to this fact. After being cut from my medications, which left me completely numb to begin with, I started to have seizures, which can happen if you stop such medications that abruptly. To this day I am trying to get help, before it's too late. Most mornings I wake, I want to end myself. Fighting it is becoming more and more difficult. The US is absolutely backwards. We are so "proud" of ourselves most of the time, yet so many are taking their own lives because they cannot afford to get help. This must change. Edit: I have just sent a "complaint" using the Parity Registry website, that you SO much for this information. I urge ANYONE to do the same!
TAN .... WOULD BE SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU WEARING “THE OUTFIT” WHICH HE LIKED AND APPROVED, well done my Indian friend. Hope you take up topic of “indiscrimination based on caste and reservations” which is ruining India’s Educational track soon 😅

This is SO well explained. Thank you, thank you! I’ve been dealing with this my whole life and still am. It’s so tough. I really appreciate that you covered this.
Thank you for focusing on this topic. Americans are dying, are being imprisoned, and are unable to contribute to the world bc of mental illness disparity. I'm one of them but don't have a voice and no one who would listen. Happy to see people who do have a voice covering what's happening in this country in impactful ways. Kick ass graphics and editing!!! You guys rock.

Mental health in my area is the worst. When I went to the doctor he diagnosed me as severely depressed for many years and what he did next was talk to me for 10 min then reccomend some drugs, on the next appointment he talked to me for like 2 min and recommended the same drugs again. The meds are clearly not working and that scumbag is charging us for the whole session every time. I stopped going there but we don't have any other choice nearby
As a Benefits Administrator, finding a provider for our members is the ultimate struggle. The carrier sites show who is in your network, but always put a disclaimer that it's your responsibility to check with the provider they are contracted before seeking care. Problem is, the providers don't usually know if they're contracted for your specific network (they tell you to check with the insurance) so you don't find out they're out of network and you're on the hook for the bill until after the claim processes. There are a million problems with our insurance industry. It needs a total overhaul.
