ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

I've definitely felt the overwhelm when the list begins to stretch! One new thing I'm trying this year - and it seems to be working - is to do more "task batching." So where before I might write "Record song, contact x person and x person and x person, mix song, water plants, etc" now I'm writing "Deep work session" (where I go to check my big project lists), a morning pickup or a bigger declutter/time to check off household tasks, and my new favorite the "Deadline Sandwich" where I do business paperwork if needed, and also check notifications and email, write letters, and generally do responses that are necessary, but distracting if I complete them by the notification and overwhelming if I write them all down on my to-do list. :) My list feels so much more maneagable when I see something like this: Get ready for the day / clean 30 minutes 2 hours deep work [excercise when you need a break] 1 hour music practice 1 hour deadline sandwich Or whatever amounts of time I think I need!

I feel this. As someone with high anxiety (highly sensitive), stress, depression, add And ocd i feel its sooo difficult to get started. Im tired already before i start cleaning, mostly due to me over-thinking. Clean it ones and you'll have to clean it all over again. Also, when i do start cleaning One area i look around and see the rest of the mess i need to take care of and i loose my focus, stress tfo and get an energy drain. I always seem to relax in hope of reload. The only thing is that me trying to relax, detox and sleep to reload gets me even more tired because i Never Relax😂. Its a real struggle.🙃😏😪😌🤪

When I feel overwhelmed I start to get self-critical and then it's almost impossible to get moving. So I sit down and make a list of all the things I have gotten done since I woke up. Ate breakfast, took my vitamins, called my mom, wrote a grocery list, went to the store, etc. Every little thing goes on there. Instead of thinking that I'm lazy, I find that it helps me realize how much I DO get done, and that shifts my negative mood and helps me get energized again.

I divide a page into three columns. The first column is a brain dump: everything in my head. The second column is a list of repeating tasks for the week: Dishes, Laundry, Mop, etc. The third column is made up of everything from the brain dump but is divided into three sections: critical, important, and whatever. The critical section is for those things wish HAVE to be done today like getting medicine from the pharmacy, calling my attorney, paying a due bill. The next section is for those things which still HAVE to be done, but could be put off until tomorrow like making a dog grooming appointment, or getting the oil changed. The last section is to do's with no deadline like hang up the new blinds, change a lightbulb, or wash the windows. I keep the page for the whole week, and erase the 3rd column as items are completed. But I check them off in the brain dump column, so there's a record of what's done. (Did I remember too... oh, yes. It's checked off.) This way I can feel accomplished with the checks. And when I see the critical section is empty, I feel more relaxed. I don't allow more than 5 items in each section of the 3rd column. Like your English Teacher said focus on a few. At the end of the week I make a new page. I transfer what needs to be copied over which is a good reminder, and discard to-do's which no longer apply. Honestly, it's nice to see a list of checks at the end of the week. Which is why I start my list with Saturday. I get more done over the weekend and love seeing what I've already accomplished during the weekdays. I'm adding a 7 day calendar to the top of the page for appointments. I love it.

So many inspirational and useful suggestions Marissa! But I've got to say, the cutaway of your editor going on epic outdoorsy adventures, with time he now had since you couldn't send him any new footage to work on, was so unexpected and hilarious! Thanks for the tips! However, I find isolated daily to-do-list without the Master plan a bit of just focusing on the tasks in the 1st Quadrant of urgent & important per Steven Covey’s 7 Habits… book. A state you don’t want to be operating in for long! Instead, attending to the “Not to do” list tasks perhaps is the 2nd quadrant of “important but not urgent,” where one Should focus more so that you have less to no tasks in the “to do list” eventually! A tip to get there that has worked for me is, use the smaller time gaps in your day to accomplish the “not to do,” list every day. Marassa, suggest you don’t read your phone while walking down the stairs, not really safe 😅. Looking forward to the next topic! Motivating.

As a single, 40hr/week working mom, I appreciate this feeling. It is interesting to read other people's do and don't lists😂. Wrapping a gift would not make it on my Do list if I were in a crisis. I'd grab a gift bag in the time it would take me to write it on a list😂. My Do list recently includes: medical appts, insurance calls, finding the leak in my roof, call roofer, vet appt. for sick dog, groceries, laundry (those have been on the Don't list so long- they graduated). Something that probly should be on my Do list- repair clothes dryer, but I'm managing by line drying and I kinda like it. There's so much more, but I need to get up to work on purging Christmas decorations and re-org the garage 😅 I wish you all the best with your lists!❤

This happens to me at work. I work in an office. More and more things keep getting added to my to do list and I start panicking because there's not enough time in the day to complete my to do list. Once I get home I'm stressed and so tired I go to sleep. Then I miss out on important things. I'm able to manage my to do list at home. But at work, I manage but there's too much work that keeps getting added. It's like I get my to do list done at work but then there's a mountain of new work that gets added on. 😫

You can cut your own hair. That of course is if the time you spend at the stylist is your needed break. Don’t have to wrap the present either. Put in a bag. Let the kids decorate the bag so it is turned into a gift bag. Love the “to don’t” list. BTW - Happy Birthday 🎉

Done is better than perfect! Love it! Wishing you luck getting everything done. Remember to give yourself this same kindness moving into your miracle mornings. I think you are an amazing person, beautiful inside and out. You have helped me as you have shared your strengths, struggles, and solutions. So I just want to give a little encouragement back. You can absolutely keep working to improve yourself and your life, but no matter if you do or don't it does not mean you are settling, failing, or holding back humanity as this book implies. You are enough exactly as you are. You don't have to do anything to earn that. Mornings do not make you moral. You are you are enough. You are allowed to sleep in, to be behind on projects, and for your house to be a mess. It doesn't make you a bad person if they are not done and it doesn't make you a good person if they are done. You are allowed to be content with yourself and your life exactly as it is. You are good because you lead your life with love and kindness.

The way I see it, there's regularly something getting in the way of a perfectly routine-based organized life. Life is just messy. So what I like to do is give myself grace when there's something overwhelming going on and I can't keep on top of things, and show gratitude to myself for the times I do have things under control, so that they aren't even worse at that moment than they already are. Got to drop everything in my life to organize an emergency funeral? Well at least, I had stacked my fridge with food earlier this week and hoovered my floors, so I do have food to eat and my place isn't too much of a mess even though I don't have time to wash the dishes right now. It's fine, it's ok, it's not that important right now. I'll get to it later and I know things will quickly get back to normal (not emotionally but you get what I mean), simply because in-between disasters my life is quite simple and fuss-free so that it can afford not to be organized and tidy when things get off-rails. It keeps me sane to know that things won't spiral out of control when something unexpected happens, and that the things I can't manage right now will be later and it's fine.

Every Sunday is jammed packed for me and my family. Even though I was dressed and ready to dive into my to-do list, I took up the offer to go for a xcountry ski with my 19 year old daughter and my husband. Andra is only home on weekends from University and I didn’t want to miss spending time with her. Once back, I set out again to meal prep, clean etc., but I received a call that I had to go get my son in town as my husband had much earlier in the day, given him a ride down, and it was my turn. Driving to town I put on your video so I could relax a bit as I was feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. It was like this video answered my prayers and more. Your to-do list was almost exactly like mine and you had experienced the same feelings as I. Thank you again for saving me. ❤😊😅

Shop for groceries online and get delivery or free pick up curbside for all stores that have this service, like ACE hardware. You will save way more money because all discounts and in-store deals are visible item by item when you search and add things to the grocery cart. Have a large rolling tote in the garage that you loaded with the groceries, and pull up the stairs into the kitchen. Less trips. Suspend your RU-vid channel for a while until you catch up. If you're stressing out about a lack of time, then look into omitting the thing that takes up the most chunk of time. You're going to become ill unless you do important self-care every day. Establish routines for yourself upon waking and in the evening. Engage the boys into the simple sub-tasks of a larger project. For example, you fill the bags for the thrift store, and they carry them out to the car.

Before shutting down the tech for the day, i leave myself a reminder or priority for tomorrow so i know what is important the next day. Picked up a horrible cold, not COVID I tested negative a few times at a business trip last week. Nothing was done since breathing is hard enough. Last week's goals now become this week's goals. I Totally Relate! There is so much to do... all at the same time! 🌬BREATHING gently and naturally... Inhale... Exhale... Repeat. It also keeps me in the Present Moment. ⏲ And it's necessary for health! Stress can be dangerous; and relaxation is the counter-balance. 😃 Breathe... Just Breathe.

I love when you refer us to a different of your videos. I love to watch but sometimes I’m not sure what I’m interested in. Can’t wait for next week for the house declutter. My husband and I are in the middle of moving. We just temporary move in a room and we’ll move again in a few months. What a pain to move all our stuff. I’m watching your videos to get inspired and truly declutter so that next time we can move without being sick of our boxes. We are also expecting a baby, so even better to have a home in order. Thank you for always working so hard to make good videos, the quality is always amazing and your content super helpful. See you next week!

💪I can do this! Right on time with your video Marissa. I just purchased a 2024 planner (marked down half-price since it's almost February now😂). Time to put my ear buds in with some instrumental music to help me focus, get the endless to-do list out of my head onto paper and prioritize!

Hiring someone to do the thing you don’t like, don’t have time for, or aren’t very good at (like video editing or lawn mowing or dress shirt ironing) is a really good use of money. For focused work I use the block method, similar to Pomodoro, that David Cain at Raptitude blog recommends. In my breaks I can do small easy tasks.

I do a complete brain dump and then each morning highlight the 5 essential tasks in a pink highlighter and just focus on those. The next day I'll highlight 5 other tasks in another and focus on those - and so on. I find this really works for me.

I do it this way. Problem: the more I’m getting done the less my husband’s doing. Main bread winner, main caregiver and main cleaner and organizer is really hard. And so if there is downtime I tend to just watch RU-vid instead of doing what I REALLY want to do (reading, playing guitar, being creative). I ask for help, but sometimes it’s like it just helps me to do even more stuff.

Because the body belongs to Nature, there is only a certain amount of energy the body has and it gets less and less as we get older. Aging pain in the body makes you less active and the energy is spent on attending to the body making sure it rests and so on but its the mind, its the forerunner of all things - still mind, more energy, busy mind, low energy.

I'm better (meaning, I get less ansious) when I'm doing related tasks. So I accumulatte several similar to-do to spend several hours at them, specially computer-related tasks (answering mails, meeting deadlines, going through bills and paperwork...). Also I sometimes go with my laptop to the coffeeshop to avoid procrastinating by tidying up or rearranging things around home

Man can I relate to this video this week! I had a pretty bad multi-day migraine that set my personal goals back about four days this last week. To catch up on my work, I had to break down my work into 500 word increments and every time I edited 500 words I just focused on the next 500 words. It does help that the free editor I use only allows good edits for 500 word increments.

@@AtoZenLife I still have a little head pain but the debilitating migraine is gone. I have learned in times like these take it slow, don't put too many expectations into place and listen to the body. I still managed to reach my personal goal for tomorrow a day early. For today, I can relax and do my laundry.

No kidding! Last week I had major plans to get ready for my husbands business trip (he left this morning). Last Monday my child had to be hospitalized overnight, then our washer broke and them we had some technician come to help clear out an allergen in our HVAC. Needless to say, I got nothing done to prepare for this week, so I’m one week behind and without a husband

I used to let all these built up things on my to do list bother me. As I got older I just did those things in the order of what I felt like doing the most at the time. That way I could get them crossed off. If it was a critical thing to do I would do it even if I didn't feel like it. For some things I would say I will do that tomorrow. I just realized that I was actually doing what you do by pushing the not so critical things to the next day. My thought was there is always tomorrow. Someday that won't be true and there will not be another tomorrow. If that is the case then who cares if those things didn't get done. I won't.

Short answer, the planet has moved into a different place in the Milky Way which has sped up vibration and we actually DO have about 30% LESS time. Since we can't change this, our job now is to Let Go of insignificant issues and tasks and simplify our lives as much as possible. ❤

Sometimes I remember something I need to do, but I’m already in bed. I keep post-its and a pen in my nightstand drawer. I write down whatever it is, put it on the top of my clock radio, and go to sleep. The next morning I put it on my to-do list.
