Don Bluthe once said, "Kids can handle anything, so long as you give it a happy ending." Personally, I feel like there's been things missing from Disney movies lately. And it might actually be scenes like these. Not all rewrites are good ones even if they make them "better" in one way, it might actually take away something else that is kind of important. You can't have rainbows without the rain afterall. However, they're far more satisfying to see after a heavy storm than they are after a light 2 minute shower.

@@Snowmon89 I can agree on this. Sad things happen in life, that's just the way it is. And it's okay when it happens because in the end, everything comes to together. I can't imagine scenes like them are too hard for kids.

The deleted scene should’ve been the original one. It touches reality and some grown ups and even though they don’t want it because it’s suppose to be for the kids, it will be looked so much better when you are older and it will be more touching as it is a childhood movie. I didn’t realize this for Ratatouille if I’m being honest for the quality it was put in, and also How to train your dragon 2 about how everything can fall apart at once which shows appreciation to what you have now, before you lose it later. Also it’s fucking touching when a family is reunited after 20 years but only being united in hours
@nkbujvytcygvujno6006
@nkbujvytcygvujno6006 5 лет назад
It is the original one, just not the one they went with. But I agree with you. There was a lot more sensitivity and empathy for Judy instead of encouraging the audience to laugh at Judy’s pain, and people shouldn’t shy away from that. They could’ve had a sensitive, emotional scene, but completely copped out, and I remember being irritated at the audience laughing at her in the theater when I first watched this movie. It could’ve been so much better!

Idk, I feel like the deleted scene wasn't too sad but rather too sappy. The one in the film made it clear enough, they didn't need to hammer us over the head with it so much. With having her call her parents instead of the other way around, and have her parents get all "honey we're so proud of you" just as she's at her lowest. I guess it depends on whether you're the dry type, though.

@swanpride
@swanpride 5 лет назад
I disagree. See, for me the Schadenfreude kind of emphasises the sadness. Her parents, while well-meaning, not really understanding Jody leaves her so much more alone in the end of it. Also, giving up THAT easily doesn't really fit her character. Remember the sh.. time she had at the academy until it paid off. I actually think that the "kid-friendly" version is the more complex and more realistic one.

@@swanpride I agree, and in the deleted scenes featurette on the BluRay, the director says that the actual reason they cut it was because Judy would have been motivated by guilt (because her parents don't know the truth about her job), rather than her own determination.

I absolutely love the deleted scene. It's very heartfelt, as well as emotional, and offers great character development between Judy and her mother. And it gives hope that things will be all right despite what happened earlier. While I wished this scene stayed in the film, I could understand why it was cut. This is suppose to be Judy's moment of weakness, and self doubt. And any number of optimism early on would have diminished the payoff when Judy has to prove herself. I think keeping her parents close minded was important until the end when Judy finds out they hired Gideon Gray (the fox bully who treated her like garbage and is now a respected baker). It made it a nice surprise to know that Judy had changed their ways, even when she didn't realize it. Plus the whole, "your ears are droopy" thing would have been redundant if it was left in. That's what I think anyway.

That scene reminded me of my time in college. Literally every day was like that for me. I felt lonely and at a low point in my life being so far from home in a new environment with no one I could comfortably talk to about how I felt. I was feeling like I had made a huge mistake in the career path I had chosen. I was frustrated due to the course work. But i couldn't tell my family about any of it because I didnt want to worry them, so Id tell them I was fine and that everything was going great. But the reality was different. Ah uwu good times.

So here's my story about my experience with this film: I first saw the trailer of this (the one when Judy and Nick went to see Flash at the DMV) and I found it alright, not the best but it was okay. During the school holidays there was nothing to do, so at the cinema they showed Zootopia - before I attended the theatre I presumed the title alone would be alright or pretty good. But I disregarded those initial presumptions, this film was more than "pretty good", this film was excellent. I was just shocked of how great that film was, and I wish we have these type of films today, well some present different qualities but not all of them. Here are the beneficial aspects of it: providing depth and cohesiveness to the narrative, inherent character chemistry and development, great music, really good animation, good pacing, and a good message. I didn't have a single flaw with Zootopia, I may have a minor drawback, that contains one cringy part, but that didn't ruin the film for me at all. It's a rare occurrence to me that I actually LOVE or felt invested in a movie nowadays, I normally think a film is either - good, great, bad, shit, or pretty good. This one was another level of being one of my favourite films. This felt like an Oscar-Winning movie. My rating: 9.3/10

Similar here. From the teaser it seemed like it would be one of Disney's throwaway films. The sloth trailer made it seem like a farce. Something about actual trailer caught my attention though... and in seeing the film opening weekend I was utterly gobsmacked and hooked. Saw it 8 times in the theatre and written tons of mini-essays on all the philosophical goodness found within and still love it nearly 3 years later. :)

Zootopia is a masterful film, and this is a masterful film. It conveys so much, even without the addition of the deleted scene (yes, please, I would still love a re-release with this deleted scene in it. It's not so changing to the story, or in any way irrelevant to the plot, and is a perfect candidate for making into a re-released film), and is always a bit of a tear jerker for me. I think it's obvious that this film was an EXTREME labour of love for the creators. Many re-writes, many re-shoots, so much footage that wasn't used, all to bring about what became, in my opinion, the greatest Disney movie of all time. Full stop. Period. I have not forgotten anything.

Pretty simple why this movie works. It's a good lesson in story arcs, like most recent Disney movies. 1. Straightforward hero's journey. Judy's arc follows it beat by beat. 2. The relationship between Judy and Nick actually follows the standard romance beat sheet, modified so that they're friends instead of lovers. 3. Sheer cuteness.

Thank you for a great video! One minor thing: In my perception that's not what schadenfreude means. Schadenfreude is a feeling of joy or satisfaction, you have when something bad happen to someone who deserves it, a rival or it just becomes a more psycho like enjoyment of general misery. When I watched the film, I was there with her in the flat. Empathy/sympathy thus not schadenfreude.

It just added so much character and love between the hopps family showing how much the parents are scared of Judy's new job but are also acceptable with knowing that Judy got herself there and then in the end can survive where she is. Proving again that her parents are very loving and supportive of her. Just a little something i had to say!

Thank you for showing us this. Sometimes the darker and more realistic scenes are better than the versions they want to show kids.

hey, i'm from germany & i BET you definitely didn't feel "schadenfreude" while this scene. nobody does. "schadenfreude" is something funny like when someone or a friend of yours stumbles over something and he falls in a bunch of mud. that's when you would feel "schadenfreude".
@vee4971
@vee4971 5 лет назад
Kids do laugh at this scene, they laugh at the misery like with he carrot thing and all, bcs they don't understand the deepness of the escene, so it is Schadenfreude
@Blabberflups
@Blabberflups 5 лет назад
@@vee4971 He says "we" so I don't think he means kids. Also, this video is analyzed from the point of an adult. it wouldn't make sense to just suddenly bring in the children's schadenfreude in a scene which is supposed to invoke sympathy from what he said before

100% agree with you here. The movie was great either way, but this additional grounding and realism would’ve slammed the emotion up to a much better level. Also agree with the movie treating Judy’s parents as cutouts without much depth, which this deleted scene would’ve provided.
@lihlin9285
@lihlin9285 5 лет назад
Fun fact: Judy can be seen wearing her pink/purple striped shirt (at 3:37) that was part of the deleted scene, but the animators forgot to change her into wearing her meter-maid vest in the final version.

OH MY GOSH I LOVE YOUR ANALYSIS!! I can see how the deleted one was good....I really like the shot of her surrounded by stuffed bunnies to show tht she misses her family. I think it's really interesting how you wanted to see how people would respond if that was the one they'd left in--with her on the train and everything, also great--and I totally agree!! Really wish they'd implemented it now!!

When I rethink back ... I just realise without this ”too sad” scene.. It changed my whole life *I always thought after watching this movie I can be whatever I want in the big city* no wonder its not for kids if they put all the scene

Nice exploration and analysis, thank you for posting! I enjoyed seeing extended scene on the DVD (more architecture/world exposition!), and while it may be more intense in a self-contained way, I’m not so sure it would have worked as well in the greater context of the narrative and the complete film. Keeping the focus on Nick and Judy (whose transformations are the main story), a humiliation conga that lets us connect and sympathize with Judy (I don’t feel we’re meant to laugh with her), maintaining the tone, and having her parents diss and dismiss her is a crushing defeat that needs no further padding (that said, I do find it a flaw that they don’t give them a chance to apologize or make up for it later in the film). And, I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for that sad music joke as well. Love the way you pointed out the cinematography for isolation and contrast. Good stuff!
