The title is misleading. It is only a particular kind of ETF (specific, vague, narrow sector such as "cancer research" or "cloud computing") that he does not like.

Jack got a new hart a few years ago. The old Hart was into index funds and so is the new. I'm retired and I will say Jack and Wardens advice works and I thank them.

I don't know what's wrong with the ETFS? I have one ETF for each Asian market. I also have several for various sectors in other countries. The point is they diversified my money and they all pay dividends.

Triple leveraged TQQQ makes sense to me. Sure it goes down sometimes, every investment does. But I never lose all the gains, and I'm usually farther ahead than if I had just bought QQQ for the same period. And usually it doesn't take long to bounce back from any down period. I'm up 137.5% on TQQQ. During the same timeframe QQQ is only up 47.15% and the S&P500 is only up 26.6%. I don't care if Jack Bogle approves or not.

A leveraged etf is a trading instrument, not an investment. Short ETFs give people acess to hedging that normally don't short. Industrial ETFs allow you to balance more into industries you think will do well. I agree that the ultra focused ETFs are kind of dumb.

Perfect explanation... No matter if you buy ETF or traditional index fund that tracks a benchmark. The returns will be the same.
@davidp1847
@davidp1847 4 года назад
At least with an ETF you aren't giving 5.5% or more of your initial investment to a "financial advisor". For most people, a self-directed Roth or traditional IRA with a broad market or index ETF is far better than having a significant chunk of your returns eaten up by loads, administrative fees, and other charges.

He's really just making the same old criticism about active investment and stock picking versus investing in a broad index. Not about ETFs as investment vehicles, but about the shortcomings of active investing as a strategy.
