On June 4, 1979, one Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings was sprung from his sweltering jail cell to lead a coup by the other ranks of the Ghanaian army. This coup turned out to be a pacesetter event that reverberated throughout West Africa.
This event, known as the June 4th Revolution in Ghana or June 4th Uprising was sparked when the then Supreme Military Council (SMC II) of General Fred Akuffo put flight-Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings on public trial for attempting to overthrow the government on May 15th 1979….
The revolution itself and Rawlings' failed mutiny on 15 May, was a culmination of the turbulent period 1972 to 1979, which will definitely go down into history as the most traumatic, the most dramatic and the most tragic period in the history of Ghana.
It was a period which saw events moving with the force of a hurricane, devastating and consuming everything in the way and leaving behind nothing but economic stagnation and bankruptcy and decadence and moral degeneration and decay.
In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the story of the events pertaining to Ghana’s famous 4 June Revolution of 1979.

Great video as always! I am a Dutch University student, majoring in History and I am really interested in world history. My critique of my education is that it is too focused on mainstream history (so it isn't too Eurocentric necessarily, but we only go indepth on for example Chinese dynasties or Egypt). But I am super interested in African history and that led to visit multiple countries on your beautiful continent! I am super grateful for your videos! You are my go to channel on everything Africa. Keep up the great work!🇳🇱🇿🇦

There were old African Empires who used to trade with the Arabs from North Africa in the Gold and salt trade. This interaction brought about the islamization of the Sub Sahara areas. Africans who fled Islamic persecution fled and settled along the west African coast until they came into contact with the Europeans after 1470s. The Europeans partition Africa among themselves

I am from the Ghana empire, which as around Mali, Timbuktu. The ruins are still there. Our people moved from Mali to present day Ghana along the coast to escape persecution. Now those along the coast came into contact with European missionaries and converted to Christianity. There was also the songhai empire. Mali Empire etc.. At the horn of Africa too, u had Arab traders going from Somalia and Sudan to, zanzibar (Tanzania) to buy slaves etc. These practices were going on before the Europeans got there.

Why are people so wicked and self-centered?? 😥😥😭 Really respected this Rawlings... My Mom, a Nigerian, told me of the history, what he did for Ghana. How Ghanaians fled to Nigeria and other countries during Ghana's economic downturn caused by the corrupt leaders. Nigeria was still having better economy at that time. But it's so painful that Nigeria later turned the same as corrupt leaders continued to evolve and increase also in Nigeria. I weep for many black nations as we have not seen our people and our nations as priority. "We do not have the oath of loyalty and Patriotism." I wish our generation and the coming one will do something about these, like Rawlings did. Respects to that man Rawlings. Was because of his name I clicked on this video. His name rings positively anytime I heard or see it. 😥

Jerry Rawlings is so dearly missed by real patriots of Ghana. He was a disciplinarian. Unfortunately, those surrounding him were not so disciplined and would rather the corruption prevail. Africa needs the likes of Nkrumah, Rawlings, Mandela, Gaddafi and other great Africans once again. It's takes force and strong hands to break free from corruption and to truly gain independence.

They only gave the dog a bad name just to kill him. He had only one house which he built in his village with the help of his community, yet he was tagged corrupt. Search well on RU-vid and you'll find more truths. The men who live during that time and were involved in what happened are out talking now. The Baah Acheamfours, Akatapores and the Boakye Gyans are all talking. Who was corrupt than JJ. He kills someone for having a WC toilet and buys a jacuzzi for his wife. He kills someone for riding their kids to school in official cars and uses the are aircraft to train his child how to fly plane. Which is more corrupt here. Acheampong did so much for Ghana which for obvious reasons have never been captured in our history books. Ask folks who live around Navrongo about the Tono dam. The estate housing projects were all his initiatives. JJ inherited factories and ended up collapsing all of them. Ghanaians now want to see industries...hahahahaha...Go and ask about what JJ did. I ever saw corned beef, rice and tomato paste produced in Ghana. We had cheap transport system called OSA. Where are they. Ghanaians were working 24/7 so there were jobs oo. Many people don't even know that Acheampong made Ghana drive on the right side. It used to be left.

Ok, for good measure, here's an anecdote. The story goes that one of these mistresses walked into his office looking for a favour of sorts. Kalabule is only a corruption of kar ka bude or kada Ka bude, depending on the variety, just like waakay (beans) has been corrupted by the dominant culture to wakye, or soboro(do) to sobolo. @@Kya1942 honestly I've been told of the Acheampong regime as one of the best,so far,I've had 2 people a history teacher and an academician tell me a lil about him but so far the books I've read just kinda outline him as a bad head of state and it's hard finding any other written sources that give unbiased accounts of the Acheampong regime. Oral accounts except the two mentioned above normally have little to no different stories to tell from the written ones.

Stop decieving your self to make him a hero because he himself admitted his party members were more corrupt than those he murdered in his uprising. Hahahahahaa...you're comparing JJ to Acheampong? You need some real good schooling on Ghana's history. When JJ came, Ghana was producing our own corned beef, canned tomato paste, shoes and jute bags for our cocoa. We were riding in OSA buses to school, and if he was that good leader you're talking about why did all of these disappear into nothingness. His wife and his cronies bought these establishments cheaply and couldn't even sustain them. We had rice mills, food distribution corporation, etc. Ask you older folks about his economic policies: ERP, PAMSCAD, SAP, etc and what benefits it brought Ghanaians. Our DOOM! Ghana had factories which got people working 24hrs. People could find jobs after standard 7 (form 4), but by 1999 university graduates were stranded in their job searches. Someone was shot because they had water closet in their homes while his wife was given a jacuzzi. Acheampong kicked out hunger with Operation Feed Yourself. He built all the the estate houses in Ghana (Dansoman, Buokrom, etc). I stand for correction, but I think the SSNIT housing project was also his initiative. Ask about what the Tono dam has done for the people of the north. Even his wife gave nursing Ghana a facelift that brought some respect to the profession. The one thing I credit JJ for is rural electrification and his wife's efforts in empowering women. The intestate succession law did come to save many heads, but in all he wasn't that great. He killed Ghana's economy. During his time, we hardly got people venturing into business like the Despites, Kwaku Otengs, etc are doing now. You'll die. He killed Apino's business...you don't know. We should just let him rest.

Jute factory couldn’t compete with synthetic bags. Do you know what women empowerment and rural electrification mean to an economy? That brought real social transformation. Again you are blind to Ghana’s democratic stability! Who brought about that..? JJ..! He stopped coups and later laid down a solid foundation to our democratic stability. And you talk Acheampong? What did Acheampong know governance and leade? Why did his own general remove and put him in prison? Because he nearly totally collapsed Ghana’s economy. Acheampong was a disgrace. Sorry to say! @@aoppong6419 Bro, first off, I'm not an Acheampong fan. I put them all in one category. Your love for JJ shows here and definitely clouds your sense objectivity on this. You seem not to even know the reason why Acheampong was ousted by his own. You talking stability? Someone who overthrows a democratically elected government even after he claims to have handed over power to the Limann government? What was his motivation for overthrowing the Akufu government when the country on already prepping for elections to switch to a democratic rule? If he is the reason for the stability you're talking about, why are we not fighting in his absence? You didn't answer the questions I posed about how we ended losing all the industries I mentioned. If you care to know, Ghana is importing jute bags now. Stop lying about the synthetic bags. Cocoa beans are never kept in synthetic bags! And cocoa being our number one export always put jute bags on high demand. Why weren't they producing to export. Dumb! Where did the other industries go after 20years of being in power. I thought you said he originated stability on this planet. Why then didn't he get them to pay the so called taxes you're talking. You don't even know why they sold them, and I will only send you to the libraries to read about why they went into his the wrong hands. How can a state owned enterprise being managed under the watch of JJ suffer at the hands of cronies if he wasn't involved? Have you forgotten that someone was taken to the stakes for taking a mere loan from the bank? If he is the best, then how did we lose OSA, Nsawam Cannery and the rest go down after they were sold out to "private" owners. Who brought about retrenchment and its accompanying rise in unemployment if he is recorded as the best. Folks in other countries don't even know that his administration collapsed the movie industry in Ghana, and prolly you're going to say NO! Funny. I believed certain lies we were told back in the day until courtesy RU-vid, I heard from those whom he hounded into exile (after they had executed the coup and brought him to the reins of powers). They put their lives on the line to do what he failed at. I know other readers will be waiting for your answers to those questions. Easy, Sir! Watch this and hear the men who were there: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p2BC4LNhnIE.html This is only one of the many. Most of what was told were founded on lies, and the results (collapse of industries and businesses; unemployment; fear, etc) showed until the Kufour government took over. Ghana became a beggar nation, a laughing stock. Do you remember those years? That lead to Acheampongs own general’s kicking him out when they sensed public anger and dissatisfaction. JJ and his young soldiers came in at the right time to salvage our beloved nation from a very incompetent generals. You talk Hilla Liman..! He couldn’t just perform. Corrupt Akans in Hillla Limans party Hijacked his policies. Just stealing. That made Rawlings come again to kick him out. Why was Ghana Telecom sold out to private ownership? And why was Ghana Airways shut down during Koufour’s time? If you could answer that, you would understand why some companies were shut down during JJ’s era..! Sorry to say you are among the very few Ghanaians who really cherish the leadership of Acheampong. He knew nothing, about governance, just spending spending on women carelessly. And the link to the RU-vid watch you sent, sorry to say. I don’t watch videos created by some one to make judgments. Acheampong was just bad..! Very bad in leading a great nation like Ghana! JJ stopped, put an end to military takeovers in Ghana, paving the way for Koufour to do good works. Today Ghana is an envy of other African nations, when it comes to democracy. And the world looks onto Ghana to see if democracy can be sustained in Africa. Rawlings spearheaded that. So never never compare Acheampong to JJ at all. Acheampong had nothing in his head.
