I know right!?!? Me and. Y best friend at 14 went to our small town theater and it’s the only time I’ve ever fallen out of my seat laughing in a movie theater... legendary
The suits are there to make money. If they just so happen to make a good film in the process, they'll take it. But most are chasing money and making decisions based on what they think will bring in the cash. That's why the superhero franchises get re-booted so often. How many Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman re-boots do we need?
Name a ground breaking movie the last 5 years. maybe 10. Name one that really sticks with you. Changes your perception on life. A one of a kind movie. yeah cant name one either
Jim needed someone to listen, react, like an actor. That’s what made Dumb and Dumber so great, a comedic classic. Loved the chemistry between them! There could not have been a better Harry than Jeff Daniels
Its a formula as old as comedy itself: the comedian and the straight man. Abbot and Costello. The Odd Couple. Trains, Planes and Automobiles. etc. I can't believe the studio was that stupid to not understand this.
Agreed, and honestly.....the sequel never should have been made. It was more than just the dialogue between Jim and Jeff in the first film that made it so great, it was the little nuances of how they played out the scenes that just shot the hilarity factor through the roof. It's kind of something that just worked, and they admirably tried and failed to replicate that in the sequel.
The sequel was good to watch on cable at least once. The part where the guy was about to shoot them, and a train just creams him was worth it. It was good to see Kathleen Turner again, especially when she beat the hell out of the bad guys at the end.
So Jim Carrey got Jeff Daniels into the movie by doing all Jeff Daniels scenes in the first week, knowing full well that once on film the studio would see how good Jeff Daniels actually was and want him to stay. Genius! In other words Jim Carrey took a back seat to his friend for the first week in order to work with him. Jim had the loyalty and confidence in his friend Jeff Daniels to put himself on the sidelines. Not many quality people like that in the world, much less in Hollywood.
As much as it is told that Jim was backing Jeff the whole way, and I agree with that. I dont think it was his decision to put so much of the first week's focus on Jeff, at least not for the reasons you state. It was probably all just a case of the studio saying they didnt want Jeff and Jim + Director saying they did want him. Studio applies pressure. Jim and D come up with a compromise to do a lot of Jeff's stuff in the first week so that the studio could review the dailies and make a judgement call. They would have been watching the dailies every day, and having a bit more of a chat about it on the weekend. For Jim's part, I think he just had faith that Jeff was the right call and supported that call the whole way through. When the First week trial idea was put on the table, he most likely confidently backed it knowing that Jeff would smash it. I dont think Jim had to set aside his ego to allow Jeff to have the spotlight as you put it. I think it was simply the machinations of the film production business.
@@jimmyeatsom3375 This. I'm sure that first week "audition" was a compromise that the studio agreed to when Carrey and the Farrelly Brothers were pushing hard for Jeff and the studio didn't want him. Ultimately the studio and directors decide the shoot schedule. This is a great example of how stupid studio interference often is. They're trying to tell Jim Carrey how to make a comedy..... idiots.
@@jimmyeatsom3375 exxxxxactly. I’m pretty sure Jeff + Jim weren’t friends when casting happened. It wasn’t Jim “taking a back seat for his friend” - they weren’t friends [yet]. But Jim knew who he wanted opposite him.

During my son's preteen years every Friday night was our movie night. We would stay up watching movies till we fell asleep on the living room floor. During those years we watched Dumb and Dumber so many times that we had the script down pat, and we would kid around with each other as Harry and Lloyd. He's grown now and I rarely see him since he lives in Hawaii and I live on the main land, but we still kid each other as Harry and Lloyd even when we call each other over the phone. Dumb and Dumber will alway's be our favorite movie.
Depcom What a great memory for you to share. My son just turned 9 and is growing so fast. Seems like just last week that I was changing his diapers. I think I will start a movie night for our family, too. Thanks for the idea.
For me and my Dad it's Monty Python and the holy grail, he showed me that movie when I was around 10 or 11 and he was losing it because I was laughing so hard even though he's seen it a few times already at that point, good memory.
Growing up in the sixties we watched Flubber, The Nutty Professor and all the Disney comedies remember little Kurt Russell? I guess I'm biased but I didn't find Dumber to be that funny....sorry.

@@heavenstomurgatroyd7033 LOL! No apology needed. Everybody got their own tastes. I have been a Jim Carrey fan since I first saw him in The Mask in 94. I've always been a Jeff Daniels fan. Now here's one versatile actor! It's hard to imagine the same man who played Harry Dunn in Dumb and Dumber appearing as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain in the movie Gettysburg, and it's hard to imagine anyone other than Jeff playing Colonel Chamberlain because they look so much alike. By the way, Gettysburg was one of me and my sons movie night favorites too. We also enjoyed The Nutty Professor but I have never seen Flubber.

@Tobias Häggberg Harry, after Lloyd tells him he swapped the van for the scooter : “Just when I think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!”
As a kid I remember saying Jeff Daniels wasnt funny compared to Jim Carrey. Now as an adult I look back and realize not only how funny Jeff Daniels was, but what a perfect complement he was in that comedic duo, and how underrated he is. Great movie.
@@shroud4269 the john Deere part? Because the "my wife says I dont listen to her enough or something. I wasn't listening" is an old joke that's probably older than seinfeld.
theoffcamerashow I thought it was a sharpie capping mishap where he has the cap in his mouth because he removed it with his teeth but missed it when he went for the recap, causing felt tip to glance off, ricochetting off the cap and landing smack dab between his lips. ..who hasn't done that before? In fact, that's how Marilyn Monroe got that mark on her cheek while signing autographs before being mobbed by paparazzi. Quick thinking on her publicist's part called it a beauty mark and turned it into a fad. .. true story 8^I ...noooo
I have watched Dumb & Dumber more times than any other comedy - in fact I think I've watched it more times than any movie, period. Jeff and Jim had insanely good chemistry on camera
Me too bro. Me and my dad watched it a lot for a time. It's funny, there are certain times in your life and then they are gone and it is a new chapter. And you are the only one that remembers.
No other actor could've *touched* Jeff Daniels in that role. He killed it so hard. That performance is up there with Gene Wilder and Pryor, or Cheech & Chong for me.
The best comedy movie ever. Hands down. "Harry, you're hands are freezing" Also, that toilet scene, so slapstick but my god did he make it work, his eyes going cross as he's dominating that toilet. Legs shaking and the look of relief when he's finished. The facial expressions. I'm gone watch that right now
And then Clint Eastwood corners him at a charity golf event and made him listen to a story about how that toilet incident actually happened to him once.
Imagine they had cast a comedian who would just try and get cheap laughs the whole movie. Wouldn't have worked at all. Jeff added heart to the movie and really made it believable, it's the reason the movie holds up so well after all these years. Wasn't just a schtick comedy. It was a movie about two friends and their journey. Best movie of all time!
@Justin Sane no, Jim made it too. Take a look at the “most annoying sound in the world” scene, that was ALL JIM CARREY! Jeff was just apart of the audience in that scene. And had Jim been in the scenes with Jeff, Jim would’ve stole the scenes from him. So to see Jeff’s comedic chops they couldn’t have Jim in those scenes because like I said Jim would’ve stole them
@@nsasupporter7557 I don't think you understood my point. The audience obviously expected Jim to be hilarious, not so much Jeff. But thanks for taking the time to over-think something for us.
I remember watching Dumb & Dumber at the cinema when it came out, I was about 14 at the time and absolutely loved everything about it. The 'heart removal' fight was a highlight for my movie violence obsession. Also the road-movie aspect of it, it had a feel-good driving-music soundtrack. Good times.
Jim Carrey is such a class act. His career exploded and he was getting paid millions of dollars. He DID NOT have to fight for Jeff Daniels, but he did so anyway. Obviously he was a fan of Jeff's or at least respected his acting (I mean, how can you not, Something Wild is one of the greatest movies of all time) I'll bet dollars to donuts that he threatened to walk if they didn't let Jeff be in the movie.....
That's cause Jeff has the I'm gonna be the dumb funny that most are afraid to do . It's like the office you truly have to be smart and open at the the same time to get that kind of dumb humour.
I've heard Carrey talk about Daniels' work in this movie before, and the impression I got was that that was exactly what he wanted to happen. This interview confirms that impression.
tyler7415 one of the very few perfect comedies. Shaun of the dead and hot fuzz are the only others that come close in my opinion. Maybe happy Gilmore too
"Wait a minute! She must have meant ten o'clock at night." "'D'you think?" "Why would she meet in a bar at 10 am?" "I figured she was a raging alcoholic."
Wait, did he say Breckenridge? I thought it was Aspen. Where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano.
This means so much to me as a writer. You can try to write for a specific type all you like, but the talent will shine through the people you choose to represent what you make.
Jim clearly had a vision of what he wanted going into this iconic comedy movie. It’s very very rare that an actor has a better vision for a movie than the actual director!
@@stanknugget buzz off punk! His mother likes it PERIOD. NO ONE ASKED FOR YOUR OPINION.... GOT NOTHING GOOD TO SAY JUST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT... COOL... MOVE ON! IM sure you like movies that aren't Oscar winner shits...
That’s so true. I’m glad Jim Carrey had that foresight. I always knew what was great about Harry was that the guy who played him was a dramatic actor. Jim is so over the top that he needed someone like Jeff who’s more mellow to balance him out.
Jim Carrey (Farrelly Bros. inclusive) to Jeff towards end of this great clip: "They love what you're doing - keep it up." Oh if there were only a few million Jim Carrey's in the World. A few thousand of the Farrelly Bros. .
I remember seeing ‘Dumb and Dumber’ in a theater in San Francisco while on vacation with my family. There were people actually rolling in the aisles of the theater. My Father’s reaction and discomfort were palpable, and he hated it. He wasn’t laughing, and sat there with his arms crossed, and my Mother and I were in hysterics. Everything was so ridiculous. But seeing his stern face while everyone in the theater was going crazy, made it even funnier.
Kinda crazy because Jeff was the established actor at this point. He had been in numerous big budget movies. Jim had only done Ace Ventura and in living color so he was the unproven commodity, not Jeff. That said, 93-96, no actor was hotter than Jim Carey. Ace, Dumb, Mask, Liar .... hit after hit after hit. Cable Guy was pretty bad but that only came after 3 hits in a row.
Hollywood means "sacred tree". It's got shit to do with the art of acting. It is about occult stuff, that you can't even begin to understand. google "Harrison Ford 666", "Johnny Depp 666", "Leo dicaprio 666", "Tarantino 666", "Emma Watson 666", "Jackie Chan 666", "Kevin Spacey 666", "Jonah Hill 666", "Jared Leto 666" and so on.
Jeff was an established actor, but back in 1994, he had sort of left Hollywood for a few years. Yes, he became a star in the 80's with Terms of Endearment and Purple Rose of Cairo, but in the late-80's, he and his family relocated back to his hometown of Michigan because he didn't want to raise is children in LA. He continued popping up in indie movies, but they were not widely seen, and Jeff had started a theatre company in Michigan
I'm really glad they stood by him to keep him in the film because I can't see anyone else in that role. He and Jim had an equal amount of funny scenes for each character. Not only did they make it funny, they turned it into a classic. It's one of those movies whereby no matter how many times I see it, it never feels stale or dated. Hell, Jeff got some of the biggest laughs when I went to see it in the theatre, especially the 'FOR GOD'S SAKE, JUST GIMME THE DAMN NUMBER!!!", and the hilarious toilet scene.
Love the question from the interviewer, "What do you mean, 'kept you that job'?"...Fantastic, an open quesion that alows Jeff to expand beyond the mundane, into someting interesting...
This channel is amazing. I am not in the film/TV industry. I just enjoy seeing these brilliant and talented people speak authentically. The interviews are top notch. Sam Jones is the real deal. You can tell he is in command of his craft.
I love this series and am so happy I subscribed to your channel a while back. I find this episode ESPECIALLY insightful and motivating. For actors AND people in other lines of work... there is just so much to be learned here. Thanks for an excellent series. 8>)
This is the only comment mentioning it too ... it bothered me the whole video... It half looks like he was biting on a pen and it exploded but it's too hard to really tell..
Very different comedic actors. Both great in their own way. So I think ‘top’ is not the correct word here. Jim would totally suck as Mrs. Doubtfire and Robin could never have made Ace Ventura a success.
The diner scene when Sea bass gets hit with the salt shaker, he comes over & Lloyd dobs him in, Sea bass asks Harry if he's going to eat his burger, the way he answers was comic genius, love that scene
@dave miller disagree. Jeff was not funnier than Jim. Did you forget the most annoying sound in the world scene? That was ALL JIM CARREY. Jeff was just apart of the audience in that scene. Had Jim been in those other scenes with Jeff, Jim would’ve stole the scenes from him. Neither one was better than the other
Jeff Daniels has so much to offer with his acting skills and he deserves to be acknowledged as one of the greats. From Dumb and Dumber to The Looming Tower he is just awesome at being anything he wants to portray.
