Why Lake Victoria Kills So Many People, and Why Lake Maracaibo Has So Much Lightning

Lake Maracaibo is famous for Catatumbo lightning, the intense lightning shows that appear nearly every night. Lake Victoria, on the other hand, is infamous for drowning unfortunate fishermen. There is one phenomenon behind this-one bizarre trick of the atmosphere that is played directly over tropical lakes, and in deep tropical valleys.

Addendum: It would be most accurate to say that Lake Maracaibo’s core lightning activity is over its southern delta. This point, however, just happens to also be the central part of the basin, where we would expect mountain breezes to converge at night. In the past, the fact that it peaked over a swamp led some to believe methane, or some other wetland emission, played a role. As is often the case around high mountain ranges, there is also a nocturnal low level jet that likely plays a role in Catatumbo lightning.

Tampa Bay has the gulf of Mexico blowing in hot humid air with the pinellas high lands and lake Wales ridge, separated by the tampa bay pushing more humidity and cross winds from the cooler Atlantic pushing a Strom band west as the day goes by. Followed by being south enough that high pressure ridges at the edges. With high altitude dust providing more static from both Mexico and Africa. In short we have the prefect conditions to charge up storms

I worked on the East side of Lake Maracaibo at Mene Grande decades ago. On the weekends, engineers from our company would meet up in Maracaibo at a place where they barbecued huge steaks called Churrascos with papas fritas. We sat outdoors and the sky would crackle from one horizon to the other in lightning bolts. It was spectacular. There were times when the light show happened, but no thunder was heard. Very strange! During that job, I took side trips to Adicuda and Coro up on the ocean. I have never in my life seen it rain so hard at times that you could not see past the hood of the car. The area had extreme weather. Off to the side of the road were huge ''spiders'' made of oil well drill casing with an old VW Beetle perched on top painted to look deadly. I met some fine Venezuelans there and we had great times. I always instigated the fight as to which beer was better...Regional or Polar... gasoline was 11 cents a gallon for the cheap stuff back then. I drank coco frio...the best! Thanks for dredging up the good memories.

This is a particularly good video. Did you ever refer to it as an alternating “land breeze/sea breeze”? That is, as you know, a widely used set of terms that is relevant - but not helpful always since it doesn’t apply cleanly to your two cases here. Anyway, beautifully done, Mr. Davis. You are teaching lots of people this way!

Another thing that contributes to more intense lightning in areas near mountain ranges is something called an “elevated mixed layer”. During the day, the elevated ground is warmed by the sun and dry convection mixes it into a layer. The warm layer expands out over the much more humid valley and acts like a lid. This allows the moist convective potential energy to build to a higher level because it delays the onset. You see this effect in both the tropics and midlatitudes. You see intense thunderstorms in northern Italy near the Alps, the US Great Plains (the western end slopes up to 5000 feet, just like a mountain range), northern parts of Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, up against the Himalayas, the eastern Congo where the trade winds blow off the eastern highlands, parts of the Caribbean coast of Columbia, and the Lake Maracaibo zone. These are all close to mountain ranges or high terrain that creates a lid trapping very hot humid air in a shallow layer close to the ground. With the exception of Bangladesh, the tropical zones have very intense lightning but very little severe weather in the form of tornadoes and large hail. This is because there isn’t enough wind shear to create more organized types of thunderstorms. Over Bangladesh the jet stream is occasionally diverted far south by the Himalayan mountains, so tornadoes and large hail can happen.

The summary of climate change is easy. It is the change of humidity in atmosphere, which produce between the (land)and the(seas & oceans) on the other hand... Occurring of rains, snow, storms, and floods at time and in unexpected places, confirm my theory(the change in the directions of winds)which must be balanced... How to reduce the heat of the earth and atmosphere? We must supply the earth with a natural cooling places... Results: ---------- 1- To balance the water vapor which produces between the( ground)and the(seas and oceans )... 2- To balance the pressures of the air in the atmosphere... 3- To balance the directions of winds which caused the climate change... 4- To control upon the storms and harricans... 5- To revive the the first theory of climate change (dynamic horizontal movement). 6- To balance the percentage of gases forming the atmosphere. 2:05 Wait! My knowledge might be deficient but isn't hot air supposed to have higher pressure? V*p=n*R*T R is the universal gas constant. We can assume that volume is constant too in the open atmosphere, so if p has to rise, then either n or T has to rise. So if T rises then p rises too, not decreases. Am I right?
@NJ-uh6hz
@NJ-uh6hz Год назад
He's talking about surface atmospheric pressure. Layman explanation: If local air is ascending, then it is not "pushing down" as much at you at ground level and air pressure is lower. It's not an enclosed space where the pressure builds as temperature rises like the gas laws state.

Lost of (????)L daily as a form of vapor of water from the ground,has a big effect to rise or reduce of temperature by veiling the rays of the sun,and decreasing the earth's radiation... Vapor condensation creates clouds that veil the sun totally,earth and atmosphere ... This a mount of water vapor became produced from(seas and oceans)... This means,the percentage of water vapor which produced from the ground and the (seas&oceans )is difficult... This means the pressures of the air in the atmosphere are different too... This case means the change in the directions of winds,which some called climate change and some called global warming, and then NINO and then LANINA, and this year they called global cooling... Abstract : The energy that dominates the earth is very great, some of it is natural, like the heat of the sun and volcanoes, and some of it is human action, by cutting down trees, without replacing them and cultivating in their place... There are five forces that control or dominate the planet... 1- The first theory (horizontal dynamic movement) and its end... The occurrence of storms, rain, floods and snow, at unexpected times and places, is because of the expiration of this theory, which needs to be balanced... 2- The second theory (vertical dynamic movement) and its end... This movement or force controls or dominates the earthquakes, earth cracks, drying up of rivers and lakes, earth openings, mountain collapses, and the emergence of drinking water springs on the ground... It becomes out of control... These phenomena increased due to the end of this theory... The third theory: it is water that rotates the earth... The fourth theory: the Earth's axis of rotation has tilted 2° degrees... The fifth theory: The Earth has a new orbit... How do you get to hell? Very simple: claim that you're innocent. How do you get to heaven? Very simple: Admit that you're not Innocent, you're guilty and ask for mercy. How to know if you're guilty or not? Simply: Compare your life to the Ten Commandments God gave you in the Bible. Everyone agrees that if people followed the ten commandments there would be no need for governments or police. Do not lie. Do not steal. Do not commit adultery. Do not insult God by using his name as a cuss word. There are six more but let's just leave it at that. How many lies have you told in your life? Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you? Jesus said, if you look at a women lustfully you've already committed adultery in your heart with that woman. How many times a day do you do that? Do you use God's name as a cuss word? Would you do that with your own mother's name? If you answer these questions honestly you know that you're guilty. God can justly punish you and send you to hell. Ask him for mercy. His name is Jesus. It's as simple as this, The Ten Commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke God's laws. Jesus paid the fine. The fine is death. Ezekiel 18:20 - "The soul who sins shall die." That's why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins. This is why God is able to give us Mercy. Option A. You die for your own sins. Option B. Ask for mercy and accept that Jesus died on the cross for you. ❤ *Honest questions are welcome.*❤ ⁸

I once heard that 50,000 people got injured in drunk driving car accidents every year. My friend could visualize that. So I told her every person oldest to youngest in her town injured from bruises to death every year.
