I was a teenager in the mid 70's. Lola was a big deal because there was time black people would run to the T.V. when a Black person was on screen (hard to believe nowadays) because Black people weren't on television... AT ALLL. So when somebody like Lola FINALLY hit the screen, She was a Black Beauty Bombshell!!! Lola brought joy to THOUSANDS of Black people who watched her through her talent and beauty. She's a true icon who doesn't get her proper historic respect.

Really? Bill Cosby was on I Soy in the ‘60’s. Ivan Dixon on Hogan’s Heroes. Nichelle Nichols on Star Trek. Eartha Kitt was on a number of shows including Batman as Catwoman. There were a lot of black people on TV in the 60’s even the 50’s when Nat King Cole had his own show. And you’re saying is they were rare on TV in the 70’s? Either you lived under a rock or you’re lying.

My hubby & I met Lola Falana in person at an event where we live! She had given up her career & was speaking about her love for Jesus Christ during the event. I had a previous engagement that same day but was able to finish up & meet my hubby at the event where she was appearing. Anyway, I couldn't spot my man to see where he was seated as this was a well attended function, so I stayed at the door scanning the room for him. In the meantime, Lola was already on the stage speaking, & she honed in on me several times & would look off down to the right. She did that several times, & I realized that she knew who I was looking for. Sure enough, I followed her gaze to find my hubby seated at a table near the stage. She was drawing energy from us as we listened to her message, &following the program we went up on stage to meet her & get her autograph. She knew we loved the Lord & enjoyed speaking with us & signing her autograph for us. Very pleasant experience, & I can tell you she was embracing us with hugs, & she's was absolutely flawless in her beauty!

Lola Falana was/is a pioneer of the TV & stage era! Waaay before Beyoncé & Rihanna, or Whitney & Halle, she “broke” barriers that many Nonwhite women had never dared. Looking at this retrospective, I’m reminded of her talent, her grace, & her tireless efforts to keep her audience riveted-really a high-wire, tightrope artist of skill & great poise under pressure. I’d assumed that MS was the main reason for her reclusion. But now I learn that she’s been busy & far from declining for many years. Never had an appreciation for how “quickly” she rose to stardom, it was really how young-a child performer when she began!! She was also very “quick” in apprehending the game, learning the ropes, & in making an exit that cannot be said to have held epic tragedy in its wake. MS is indeed serious. I’ve lost a very good friend to it. Ms. Falana’s remarkably active & varied recovery is a testament to no small amount of inner strength & to listening to her own body’s abilities. I salute her genius. PS-Dinah Washington, whose fame was before your time, mentored & encouraged many young talents & peers. Her voice is one of jazz/music’s G.O.A.T. vocalists. “Dinah” is said with a long-i, like the Louis Armstrong hit song of that name.

How am I only learning about this fabulous woman now? She's AMAZING...full steam ahead all the time. The kind of performer I aspire to be...without the burnout. I have been lucky enough to be a performer for 50 years ...and still going strong. Anyone caught up in the treadmill of making tons of money for someone else......don't let them push you beyond your limits. Health first. Deep admiration , love and thanks due to Lola. Inspiring in everything she does. Thank you for taking care of the orphans.Respect.

Thanks for the video on Lola. I always refer to her and Irene Cara as the original "Afro-Latinas" in show business. I remember seeing her commercial , where she was the first woman to earna $1,0000,00.00 back in the day and watching her on various shows as a kid in the 70's. Talented lady and I hope she is doing well. I would love to see a movie based on her life.

The 1960’s and 1970’s was a time of entertainment - Broadway, Hollywood musicals, Las Vegas- and Lola was a part of it all. I did not know how close she was to Sammy Davis jr., but it makes sense. When I heard that Lola became a nun, I could understand. She decided to get off of the merry-go-round. Not everyone is able to walk away from that kind of fame. ❤

I'm Philiadelphian and I tell you her career burned in me the importance of being an incredible personality as a talented black woman and unafraid to do God's work and see it clearly! I have a slow growth curve and grateful for it! Thank you I bwill post your link and a small excerpt!

You got Hollywood in the right 'box', Karine. Hollywood is very good at the 'you're dead to me' game. Lola Falana was blessed with what talent scouts call 'it'. It's sad that she was appreciated more in Europe then she was here (U.S.). I understand it. There are so many United States musical artists that are accepted/compensated monetarily in Europe. It is truly our loss. I'm happy to hear she was very successful in Spain and Italy. I would have loved to have seen her with her own way of using her talent. Kinda like when Eartha Kitt had her own TV show. I recently heard that when Candi Staton dropped out of the 'spot light', she had used her talent for her faith and started singing gospel. So of course Hollywood considered that Candi was 'dead to them'.

Manic depression (melancholia) runs in the Sherman side of my family. I was always considered talented in singing, am a natural (untrained) dancer and frenetic athlete, an early reader, an early learner of algebra, and had poor study techniques due to being kept in elementary school against my will and passing exams effortlessly. At the same time, I always considered myself ugly, have been a social pariah my entire life, am the world’s worst salesman, and am the Cassandra of American Politics. Though I am constitutionally incapable of success, I can relate to Lola Falana’s story, especially to its melancholia aspect. Thank you for sharing.

I always loved Lola!! She was just everything to me, the epitome of an entertainer and was very inspirational. She never cheapened herself to be famous, she just had that "it" factor. She encouraged me to learn Italian and although I am not 100% fluent I know more now that I did before. As a 40+ person I played a different game and am very happy entertaining when I can. I was lucky to meet a lot of celebrities who looked out for me and guided me, so even though I don't have international fame, but I am well known in certain circles. I never did all of those things to be famous so what Lola said really resonated with me. I am happy and healthy and enjoy spreading love, and happiness. I enjoy my RU-vid channel "Lord Brian Alejandro" Lola taught me a lot! and teaching the Dunham technique to people around the world. Thank you for posting this.

Her story reminds me of Betty Page, the pinup girl who mysteriously disappeared and became a Christian & worked behind the scenes of the Billy Graham Crusade until the day she died in 2009. She changed her appearance so that only the grahams knew her true identity at her request of course. I think it was nice of them to keep their promise to her.

People who care too much about what others think and say and try to please people are usually those who have low self esteem and fall into depression. This is why the internet is said to be adversely affecting so many people. They are constantly comparing and concerning themselves with the lives of others. People who make their living dependent on this, is what hurts a lot of people in the industry. Nowadays, if you do or say something people don't like, they try to cancel you. Lola Falana's walking away from that mindset is probably what saved her. It definitely gave her peace of mind.

Lola Falana is one of my favorite entertainers of all time I love her! I was a little girl when she came on the scene and it’s amazing how much that she is forgotten. I can remember when she was the ish! But I am glad that she was healed from MS and that she decided to walk away from Hollywood safely. She’s probably in her 80’s now and I’m glad that she’s still alive. Because most of the entertainers who did it the way that she did it are gone now. I enjoyed the way that you chose to celebrate her and I appreciate all of the footage that you shared with us. This was incredible and it brought me so much joy to watch thanks again 👏🏾👏🏾
