When I was in my teens and young twenties, I once told myself that I will get a Mercedes-Benz one day. Now that I'm in my mid forties and having a good paying career, I realize now that high end luxury cars are mostly just vanity and not really worth buying unless you actually can afford the repair costs. Also, if you purchase the upper trim levels of many mainstream cars and SUV's(Honda Accord Touring, Toyota Camry XSE, Toyota Highlander Limited, etc), they are just as luxurious as many luxury branded vehicles, and sometimes, the mainstream models have more standard equipment, yet still sells at a lower price.

The reason why European cars are unreliable money pits, is because they are over engineered and unnecessarily complicated when they don’t need to be. The more complicated a car is, the more chance something will go wrong which means your mechanic (at your expense$$$$), will take longer to both diagnose and fix the problem. Stick with Japanese and Korean cars, better still buy a Toyota/Lexus.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 6 месяцев назад
Most, if not all new vehicles have several things wrong with them when they come off the assembly line. You have zero chance of not having a ton of problems with ANY new vehicle, and once the warranty expires, they become completely worthless, because they cost more to fix than they will ever be worth. And it won't be a one time fix, it will happen over and over again for as long as you own it. And buying another new vehicle is going to be even worse. I think this is by design. I am a mechanic not an engineer, but when I see the way these piles of junk are designed, I just can't believe a competent engineer had anything to do with it. New vehicles have already become too expensive to buy and too expensive to fix. Older vehicles can still be kept going, but they won't last forever, and when they are gone, there will be no more vehicles.

Key take aways: 1) Luxury cars are great short term cars to have, but will cost a lot to maintain with age. 2) Leasing will save you a lot of money in the long run if you want a luxury European car. 3) If you are a “buy it and drive it into the ground” kind of car owner, Lexus or Acura are going to be the best luxury brands for you.

I have owned 17 Audis over several decades and have truly had little issues outside of regular maintenance. Have a 2007 MB C230 as well which runs great. The key to German car ownership is maintaining them and doing proper preventive maintenance. If you want an appliance and boring, get a Lexus. Even they try to copy the German experience. German manufacturers push the limits to deliver a certain kind of automotive experience. Why do German makes such as Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and even VW have such owner enthusiasm and automotive culture with so many aftermarket car clubs and rabid followings, etc.? These makes are more than just cars, they represent a state of mind that few other brands can achieve.

I have driven a Mercedes since 2000, and never had one break down by the side of the road, and never had one that needed a major repair. I presently have 3 cars in my household: a 2017 BMW, a 2018 Audi, and a 2019 Mercedes. This week, we have the first major repair on any of the three cars we own: the BMW needed a $2,600 repair. A few months back, my Mercedes needed a minor repair (less than $500), but it was covered under an extended warranty. I prefer German cars because if you take care of them, they are built well and will look great even after a decade. They are all heavy and solid. I pamper my cars. I maintain them as soon as the light comes on saying they need maintenance. I don't accelerate fast or brake hard. (As proof, I have made it to 57,000 miles on my Mercedes, and haven't changed the brake pads.) As for Japanese competitors... I don't like the styling. I think the grills on the newer Lexus looks horrible. That's simply a matter of personal preference. If you get used to driving German cars, you will most likely never own a Japanese car.

If u r flooring all the time on the highways showing off 0-60 or when there are pretty women at a red light, u gotta pay up at the workshop.... simple. I’ve been a tech for almost 3 decades now, and I have two things to say. 1) Here’s a test you can do-go to any shop in your area and see what cars the techs drive. I guarantee not a one drives anything European. I’ve worked with hundreds of techs over the years and only ONE drove a European car, and he was a polak right off the boat. 2) At the first shop I worked at back in the late 90’s, there was a guy that worked there who became a really good friend of mine. He was a Spanish dude and he would always translate for the Spanish people that came into our shop. He had this buddy who was from somewhere in South America (I think Brazil) who had this absolutely mint early 90’s Ford Taurus. Top of the line model, not a scratch on it,, you could eat right off the top of the engine. There was never a speck of dust on this car, it was immaculate, and that’s saying something for a car that spent almost 10 years in northern Illinois with the salt and rust. It struck me as kind of odd because well, a Ford Taurus isn’t exactly a car that an American would aspire to own and treat like a Lamborghini. It’s the kind of car that you get stuck with because you couldn’t afford something else or your parents let you drive it in high school because they knew you’d destroy it. No one’s dream car is a 1991 Ford Taurus. So I asked my buddy about it and he told me something really interesting- evidently in South America, the Taurus (and even more so the Sable) was a sign of wealth and considered extreme luxury. If you owned one of these, you were the absolute $hit. It was at that moment that I realized it was all about perspective. In Europe, BMW’s and Benz’s are taxi cabs. They are to the Europeans what the ford Taurus is to us. Americans have been brainwashed into thinking that euro cars are some standard of quality unattainable by American or Japanese cars. Yes, they may be a sign of wealth, but if that’s the way you spend your money, you’re not very smart.

Expensive cars are always expensive to maintain, and as someone once said 'All of life's costs are expensive'. Most of the issues are from cars that into their third, fourth plus owners, haven't the cash or where with all to look after these thoroughbreds. Land Rovers are shite from new, no doubt about that, but the worst car I ever had was a Toyota, which traumatized me. Mercs and Beemers are fine motors, but they need servicing, which Americans don't seem to do much of. Perhaps, they should revert to the wagon train.

The amount of German car fanboys in denial is hilarious. “BMW is all about performance, Japan can’t beat German performance”. No one cares about you 500hp car that’ll break down in 2 years and/ or lose 85% of the value that was paid for it. The Japanese are leading the way for future tech, if they really wanted to, they’d engineer way better performance cars. But they’re in the business of making reliable affordable cars. What has Germany done in the last 50 years in terms of technology? Nothing, that’s what. They’re in the background while even China has better tech. Get over it, German ingenuity died with WW2. Lmao that’s all Germans have to boast about. Their cars and tech are trash now.

These cars are very sought after in Europe with long lead times to buy new. If they are as you say unreliable then why do people want them. The answer is the driving experience is much more pleasurable than other brands. You are more likely to get things go wrong because by their nature there is more to go wrong in them. If I want reliability I will buy a Dacia . No frills , wind up windows and nothing to go wrong and cheap. Will I enjoy driving it no.

In my personal experience my BMW has been nearly perfect besides some odd small things, that were fixable by myself. Another reason why these car "fail" often is because of the neglect they face during ownership. A LOT of people buy these cars for the badge but don't want to actually take care of them. I do not agree with the statements made here. I have been driving Mercedes for many years and always own the cars. The running costs are low and very little has broken down in my case so far. What is recommendable, however, is that there are better and worse engine and vehicle generations. Before buying, one should inform oneself well. And: the article is very superficial because you cannot compare a 6 or 8 cylinder engine with the standard 4 cylinder engines made by “cheaper” brands. Of course, performance also costs something...

Good 👍 but people don’t buy the cars based on the reliability only. Japanese cars are good reliable but the look is boring. Lexus with those large grills is very awful to look at and I don’t know how people buy those. Audi looks great and it’s very hard to resist buying them. So a lot of things force people still buy luxury brands. But I never understand what stopping these German luxury brands to improve their reliability like Japanese brands.

ALL new vehicles are so unreliable and so expensive to fix that they are completely worthless. It didn't used to be that way. All vehicles used to be much more reliable, and much, much less expensive to fix when something did go wrong. I recently retired after 37 years as a professional mechanic for a large government fleet department. I experienced the decline in reliability and the much higher cost of repair during that time. We only had American brand vehicles. Back in the early '80s, vehicles rarely broke down, and when they did, they were very easy to troubleshoot and repair. Things were simple and straightforward. Year by year things got worse and worse. The last few years I worked there I mostly worked on vehicles that were brought in seemingly running fine, but had the check engine light on. There would be 7-8 of them a day. Since we were a government organization, we had to fix them. A few were easy, and you do become more familiar with vehicles over time, and learn their quirks. Nonetheless, it usually took 3-4 hours apiece to diagnose and repair these vehicles, and it cost the taxpayers a fortune. My hobby since I was about 10 years old, has been vintage American vehicles, mostly Chevys, but I have owned many different brands. And I can tell you for an absolute fact that these vehicles were 10 times more reliable than ANY new vehicle. Most of the problems they had when new or fairly new were cause by poor assembly and quality control. People complain the 1960s and 1970s vehicles couldn't make it past 100,000 miles, and that's what the odometer only went to 100,000 miles. In many cases that was true. But now those vehicles are over half a century old. I have rebuilt a lot of them. Only I did a lot better job than the factory did. And they lasted several times longer. The design of these vehicles was WONDERRFUL. Engineering was first rate. Properly built, they will last almost forever. But that is no longer the case. New vehicles are an absolute NIGHTMARE when it comes to mechanical design, TRASH technology, AND poor build quality. They are so complex and so failure prone that they are no longer worth buying or repairing.

All vehicles give problems, whether a Roller, Bentley, Lamborghini or Fiat or Hyundai. The cost of the car has nothing to do with the quality /durability. Most of the time it's the Badge that determines the choice apart from utility vehicles. A millionaire will go for an expensive vehicle and the opposite applies to the "budget person ". So let's be in our lane and stop copying the Jones just because of the little money we have.

The car is supposed to be a transportation tool like a hammer is to the carpenter. Remember that the things that cost you money are actually costing you time because you get money with work and effort. If you like cars and have money to buy them, better use it to buy shares or invest wisely, the admiration and idolatry that people have for cars is mega stupid.
