While half of the European population have died of the bubonic plague, the virus was coming quick to Lyon. So people from Lyon started to pray the Virgin Mary mother of God the 8th of December. The plague never entered Lyon. Since then, we thanks St Marie every year that day by putting candels at our windows during the night.

Really good video, but I did not look how old it was. When it started with you saying you escaped Europe just in time when 'covid' broke out, I laughed so hard because unfortanately you escaped to the worst prison country 'NZ' besides china for the cv scam. I hope all went well & your good though.

*Legally Blonde Abroad* Hello from South France,, The lighting of monuments as seen in the *Festival des Lumières* de Lyon is a French know-how. It was *Jean-Michel Jarre* who was the first to make discover this art beyond our borders during his concert to celebrate 25 years of *NASA* and 150 years of Texas in Houston on April 14, 1986, 1.5 million spectators, it was the biggest concert in the history of the United States! Thanks for sharing your experience. Peace, folks.

For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montelimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than a hint of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presque Ile, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourviere Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse, is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if its ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this side of France at Montelimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the ‘true’ south. But where oh, where, are the shutters?!

you also have the largest free zoo in europe, at the parc de la tête d'or. You have the traboules of old Lyon. You also have catacombs in Lyon. You have flea markets organized in different places and at different times, if you want to buy old items. And obviously, lots of museums, the museum of miniatures, fabrics, Romans (who lived a long time ago in Lyon) and lots of others.

Thank you so much for these super helpful videos! I am considering attending Lyon 2 as an international student next year and was wondering if you knew anything about it or if you had any interactions with the university or people from it since from my understanding it is very different from Lyon 3 where you were a student?

Coraline Crannell hey there ! I’m really sorry but I do not know a lot about Lyon 2, although I believe the campus is very close to Lyon 3. I occasionally came across other international students who studied there (as you do being an anglophone abroad!) but I never asked about the university itself.

Hi there Ron! I recommend the Jazz Club Lyon St George (sometimes known as B5) in Vieux Lyon. According to a quick Google search, it is temporarily closed but I hope it will be back open for your visit next May. I also recommend La Clef de Voûte in la Croix Rousse - very nice atmosphere and music goes down well with their selection of wine and cheese.

Hey! thanks so much for these videos, I'm a UK uni student and hoping to study abroad in Lyon in 2021 as part of my French and Politics degree. Your accommodation video was super helpful but I was wondering if you suggest the best arrondissements/quartiers to stay in for nightlife, general vibe, etc, my uni would be in the 7th district! Thanks so much, glad you're now safe at home in NZ xx
@LegallyBlondeAbroad
@LegallyBlondeAbroad 4 года назад
Hey Isla! Thanks so much for your feedback and how exciting for you to be on your way to Lyon in 2021! Your question is very good, I actually thought it might be a good topic for a video. I can summarise the arrondissements here in a comment, but feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or Facebook (links in my Channel) and we can chat further about it. In summary, any arrondissement on the Presqu'îl is generally really nice, and good because close to Bellecour, which is the centre of town. Guilliotière is a little dodgy, so be wary when looking for accomodation around there. Croix-Rousse, Vieux Lyon are both more historic and charming areas of town, very charming but the price is a little higher. The Confluence area down where the two rivers meet is really hip and there is lots of modern architecture. Around university in the 7th/8th arr, such as Jean Macé etc are pretty good places and ideal for proximity to Jean Moulin Lyon 3. Hope this helps ! x
@LegallyBlondeAbroad
@LegallyBlondeAbroad 4 года назад
Also, the 6th arr near Parc de la Tête d'Or is super nice, swanky and quite a wealthy area. Probably not friendly for the student budget but if you can land something there for a good price, that would be great !

Have you ever heard about New Caledonia? :0 One day I'd like to see Vlogs of my smole archipelago :') Australia and New Zealand people often forgot we mostly speak french here, there is the CREIPAC if you're interested. Well actually it's not our neighboor faults, our dudes here are just bad at communication I guess. Also, I'm watching your videos because I'll probably study in Lyon so I wanted a non-french point of view as usual. ^^

@LegallyBlondeAbroad 3 года назад
Hey there ! I learnt french at high school and also did an exchange for 3 months when I was 16, so had a bit of grounding before getting there. But I had friends who knew no French whatsoever and they managed. Some French don’t like to speak English in public (because they are actually shy), so it can be tricky, but this is a great opportunity to practice your French!
