Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Lord Voldemort and his horcruxes. More specifically- we’re going to be discussing his CHOICE of Horcruxes- actually, one in particular- Nagini.
A horcrux is an object in which a dark witch or wizard has imbued part of their soul, and the ultimate goal when creating horcruxes is to achieve immortality. It’s certainly not well known magic, and that’s because it’s excessively evil. Perhaps the most sinister aspect of creating a horcrux is that in order to produce one, you must MURDER someone. Other than Herpo the Foul, Voldemort is the only known wizard to have produced a horcrux. The only difference there is that Herpo only made one, and Voldemort made NUMEROUS.
A diary, a ring, a locket, a cup, a diadem, a boy (albeit unintentional), and a snake- these were Voldemort’s horcruxes. The one that I want to focus on in today’s video, however, is Nagini.
From as far back as we can remember, Nagini is glued to Voldemort’s side- a trustworthy and loyal companion through seemingly any kind of adversity. They first met in the forests of Albania sometime in the 1980s- When Voldemort was weak and just a shadow of the powerful wizard he once was. He was lost, and unsure of his next move, but it just so happened that SO was Nagini- a maledictus that had permanently assumed her animal form. They were a couple of lost souls, a recently defeated and disembodied dark wizard, and a lonely snake suffering from a crippling blood curse. Provided that Voldemort could actually communicate with her via parseltongue, and that Voldemort’s bloodline had a connection with snakes, it’s not surprising that the pair would couple up. However, Voldemort’s next move was, in my eyes, questionable.
The move in question was of course turning Nagini in to his final horcrux. In 1994, ministry employee Bertha Jorkins made the unfortunate decision to take a trip to Albania. I say unfortunate, because at this same point in time Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew and Nagini were all there as well.
Pettigrew, who previously knew Jorkins, convinced her to take a stroll with him in to the woods- leading her to Voldemort. At this point, Voldemort tortured and eventually murdered Bertha. As we know, in order to create a Horcrux, murder is necessary, so in killing Bertha, Voldemort effectively turned Nagini in to his final horcrux.
Ok- so Nagini was made to be a horcrux-but why, you might be wondering now, was this such a bad decision? Here’s the thing: horcruxes are objects in which a wizard has IMBUED part of their soul. The main issue with turning Nagini in to one is that she is a living, sentient being with a lifespan of her own. If Voldemort’s goal was to be immortal, and the goal of creating horcruxes is to EXTEND your lifespan, then what’s the point of having a horcrux with a time limit on it? Even if a maledictus lives for a long time, they are still going to die EVENTUALLY- so Voldemort’s decision to turn Nagini in to one was fundamentally flawed.
Dumbledore actually discusses the risks of using a living thing as a horcrux in the book:
“I don't think so," said Dumbledore. "I think I know what the sixth Horcrux is. I wonder what you will say when I confess that I have been curious for a while about the behavior of the snake, Nagini?"
"The snake?" said Harry, startled. "You can use animals as Horcruxes?"
"Well, it is inadvisable to do so," said Dumbledore, "because to confide a part of your soul to something that can think and move for itself is obviously a very risky business. However, if my calculations are correct, Voldemort was still at least one Horcrux short of his goal of six when he entered your parents' house with the intention of killing you.”
Even Dumbledore recognized the dangers of making a living thing a Horcrux- so I’m sure Voldemort knew what he was getting himself in to. This is why I think that turning Nagini in to a Horcrux was an emotionally driven decision- not a logical one.

Jk Rowling: 'Everything would have changed if his mother survived and loved him'. I interpret that Voldemort would have learnt to love by learning/observing it from his mother (and by returning the gestures). His mother however died. He didn't learn from her what love is, nor do I imagine him experiencing it from anyone else (more so fear, respect). This, however, doesn't mean he'd be incapable of loving. He just wouldn't understand his feelings. Not entirely sure, but I think Voldemort ignores what he doesn't understand?

I wonder if instead of the good side of love, Tom would have used love as a way to control and manipulate people, like how some abusers would. A lot of abusive partners would use the excuse of "loving" someone as a reason for hurting them, by saying it's the other person's fault they had to behave a certain way. @@denizkenger52 the process of making a horcrux can not possibly be a metaphor for ”making love”, how could it? Its transfering a part of the soul into an object after you killed a person. @shannonmoore1116
@shannonmoore1116 2 года назад
She loved him because he was the only one on planet earth who she could speak to. Because of her blood curse making her a snake, she only speaks parseltongue. No one can understand her, and she can't understand anyone else. She's been stuck alone, her whole life with no one to talk to, and no one to talk to her. Until Credence came along. It's suspected that Credence is actually a fucking GUANT. Meaning he can speak parseltongue. Nagini fell in love with him obviously. But after Credence, then what? She's alone again. With no one to talk to, and no one to speak to her. Except this time the loneliness is WORSE, because she now knows what it is to have love and communication between two people. She knows that feeling now, and yearns for it even more now that it's gone. She rots inside with that turmoil for years, thinking it'd be this way until she dies. All alone on a planet of 8 billion people. Until.... Until Tom Riddle came along. And for the very first time since Credence? She can speak to, and be spoken to. She's not all alone in the world, anymore. She doesn't want to lose that again, so she does anything and everything Tom Riddle tells her too. And I don't blame her. She knew if she was ever separated from Tom, she'd be the lone speaking Parseltongue again. Credence and Tom are the only two people in her existence that can understand her words, and can speak back in words she understands. I cannot imagine that feeling of isolation, and then the desperation it would cause at the thought of losing Tom. All this is based off the theory that Credence is secretly a Guant, and that's why Nagini never has a conversation or a spoken word exchanged between her and anyone else. Not once. So I believe the theory, and once you think of it like that, you can understand EXACTLY why Nagini made the choices she made.

I think this was a pragmatic move, by making Nagini a horcrux, the last horcrux to be destroyed would be directly guarded by Voldermort himself, as well as having its own mind and control, it cannot be stolen or killed easily and it kills other things, a protection method for the horcrux.

I've always been curious about Voldemort and Nagini's past, and now learning she was a maledictus it raises even more questions. How/when did they meet? Was she still human or had she transformed into a snake permanently when they met? Why did he form such a bond with her and why was she so faithful to him when she was atleast at one point on the side of good? Personally Nagini's story is the main reason I look forward to seeing how the rest of Fantastic Beasts plays out.

My thoughts on how Voldemort was affected by the love are that it did, perhaps, stunt his emotions in some capacity (which would help to explain why he is so utterly, for lack of better word, "psychopathic" as a young child), but it certainly didn't make him incapable of feeling love, let alone caring about others. He certainly loves Hogwarts and cherishes magic, but if he were to feel love for another person, he would undoubtedly not think of the emotion as such and/or dismiss it entirely due to his evident disdain for the concept. For example, he does show some amount of emotion for his mother at two points in the series, those being his reaction to Hepzibah Smith's comment about her and his explanation to Harry about his family history in the graveyard. In the latter case, I see the vaguest hint of sadness or disappointment in his words regarding his mother's fate. He immediately discards the subject with a sarcastic remark that he is growing sentimental and calls the death eaters his true family, but I find the fact that he spoke of his supposedly despised parents at all quite telling. In Nagini's case, Dumbledore does indeed say it best "I think he is perhaps as fond of her as he can be of anything". He clearly does care for her as more than just a Horcrux, as he speaks to her with respect, despite her status as an underbeing, and he never shows her the cruelty he shows even his most loyal supporters (Bellatrix). He even comforts her when she gets irritated by the laughter of the death eaters. Whether he truly loves her is debatable, but given that he is capable of love, and Dumbledore seems to understand him quite well, it stands to reason that he does love the being who he is as fond of "as he can be of anything". Of course, he would never think of it as love, but denial does not erase reality.

OMG I think that he wanted her to be a horcrux because he was sure that with the rest of the horcruxes, he will never die and maybe he was hoping that Nagini will also be kept alive if she is intertwined with him. Maybe that's not how it works, but hey, nobody had done it before, so probably he just wanted to try and see if she could become immortal as well. In this way, she will be there for him forever. Now when I think about it - that is incredible!

Dumbledore and Harry believed he could feel remorse and chose not too. Also Harry had a thought that he would never die as long as Voldemort lived because his life force was tethered to the Horcruxes just as much.

Voldermort was attached to objects: Slytherin locket, the lake in the sea cave, things he stole from other kids. Nagini was something in between a human and an object. Plus, she was the only woman which nursed him. Maybe he related to her as surrogate mother.

Yeah, it makes sense but even if he loved Nagini it wouldn't have been anything too strong. As we know he didn't understand or feel love, so she was probably more of just a companion who he enjoyed her company. Definitely a bond, but maybe not that deep of a level.

Making Nagini a horcrux made her stronger than she would’ve been. Not only did she have power from having Voldemort’s soul attached to her, but she was almost indestructible. No common weapon or spell could kill her. We could call that love, or we could call that Voldemort’s possessive personality. He found something he liked and he didn’t want to lose it.

Sorry, I'm late to your channel, but I must say thank you because ever since I met Nagini (as a person) in FB 2, I was immediately interested in her story and how she ended up with Valdemort. I still hope we get to see at least a hint of that before the FB series ends. But at least, you and others found the canon story about how they met and became dependent on one another. I'd still love to see it though. 🙂

We need to remember that Dumbledore may not always be a reliable narrator. I always thought Lord Voldemort would be more interesting if he loved Nagini. He’s still human and we know that even mass murderers in the real world often have feelings and love people. Doesn’t excuse what Voldemort did, but definitely makes him more interesting.

The thing is when he show regards for his kind and the revenge for how her mother was treated shows that he cares of some and the capability of love. Had he not been able to feel it his wand would also have been short probably even shorter than umbridge's because lack of love leads to falling short on other feelings too. He would have never even found a path to forming his heirarchy had he not got the path of Salazar Slytherin who was a normal person but felt that muggles have always discriminated magicians so they should cut them off. Grindelwald's movement would also have been instrumental in Voldemort's path creation as he was quite successful with this idea and said in the 2nd fantastic beasts movie that he hates Paris which is quite symbolic that he despised love.

The thing I’m most curious about is what happened to her to turn her as evil as him. Was it something a wizard did to make her hate people or did he completely seduce her as he did his followers or could Voldemort have used the imperious curse on her? She didn’t come across as power hungry or pure blood racist or weak minded as the other followers were.

While I used to believe that Voldemort was incapable of feeling love, I now think it is more a case of being unable to recognize and understand it, combined with egocentrism and narcissism, which led to the perception that he was unable to feel it. For example, he knew that Severus had feelings for Lily and Bellatrix for him but in the case of Severus he saw it as a mere lust and with Bellatrix he likely believed she was mostly drawn to his power (he knew how looked after creating 7 Horcruxes...) but was unable to recognize the genuine love aspect behind it. It also doesn't help that his romantic experience was completely different than that of most others, he was a demisexual, borderline asexual and associated love with sexual lust based on either appearance or power, therefore he always underestimated it. But with Nagini is indeed the only person he ever felt love for, though he didn't know it, because there was no sexual component to their relationship and he had no real desires in that direction. The reason why he turned her into a Horcrux might have been due to the fact that he was trying to give her a form of immortality. I think Voldemort knew more about horcruxes than any other wizard who had lived and had studied the topic more extensively than anyone else and we know that there have been more wizards (and likely witches) who have created horcruxes between Herpo and Voldemort. There is just too much information on the topic, like the different way of destroying them and how to heal one's soul (which could result in death but not neccessarily) to come from just Herpo. So, what if a crazed wizard tried to turn an animal into a horcrux and discovered by doing so that it could expand the life span drastically, as in: eliminating the possibility to die of old age. Sure, it was still more vulnerable than objects but it had to be "destroyed" in order to die. if this would be true, it wouldn't just mean that Voldemort assured his own immortality but that of Nagini with the restriction that she was only immortal as long as he willed it. He held the strings and that's a dynamic, he would have liked, I imagine. The one who he cared for the most, would be with him, for as long as he wanted and holding her immortality in his hands, she was bound to be loyal to him. It would be just strange for Voldemort to create a horcrux destined to be destroyed when the host died of natural causes. I mean, while Voldemort wasn't always that careful with his horcruxes, creating a horcrux that doubles as a weapon is one thing, creating one with a fixed limited lifespan is a complete other matter... Oh and for those who wonder why I call Voldemort a demisexual instead of asexual, is because he had a daughter in the Cursed Child (which is still officially canon, even if most of the fanbase reject it). This would indicate that might have some small fraction of sexual attraction though I also think that the conception of his daughter had a more nefarious purpose and she was meant as another step in his path to absolute immortality...

Making Nagiri a Horcrux also likely made her more powerful and resistant to death as was seen in the films where spells just kind of bounced off of her and it took the sword of Griffindor to kill her. This could also be seen as a form of love on Voldemort's part.

I think when 2 people can benefit from each other like Voldemort and Nagini and there similarities make family love inside them and I believe only relationship love can be effected by a love potion not from a family or a friend even so if Tom had had friends apart from Nagini and apart from a few death eaters who just wanted to do evil deeds he would have been lifted from his curse and he might have grown to be a kind and hopeful man even helping Harry out with many things

Tbh, when he was but a broken piece of soul floating around, it was a weak state, akin to reverting to a child in some regards. And during then, Nagini fed him with her snake -milk- venom. So, in that way, she was the closest thing Voldemort had to a mother.

I do think Nagini was Voldi's first and only chosen TRUE friend. Which I'm sure he'd deny but they can talk without anyone knowing what they are saying, she always has his back, and he needed her to stay alive and get a body back. I'm sure he hinted at giving back her human form for her loyalty, but I think besides putting himself INSIDE her...unsexually, that they truly had a bond.

He had a very twisted way of "loving" people, animals and things. He "liked" people who served him, who could be manipulated and who shared his goals - his "friends" from school, Bellatrix and other people. He cared for Nagini just like you explained but it was not a pure selfless love. He used and manipulated her as well, especially because she was very vulnerable and a very rare creature (probably the only living snake Maledictus). His connection to her (and snakes and Slytherin house in general) of course influenced his decisions but there are other reasons as well. He liked to push the boundaries of magic, to experiment, do things other wizards have never done. He was also arrogant, he thought he could protect Nagini and make her live for a very long time, probably infinately eventually. And if not, he thought he would have other horcruxes as a backup and could create more if one or more are destroyed to always have seven.

I'm not convinced, I like that you found the interview question, but I think his bond with nagini was more out of respect, like he gave wormtsil the hand, but he didn't respect wormtail. I think the idea of Voldemort loving Nagini makes a LOT of sense, especially considering his own parentage. Both of his parents were extremely selfish, and his mother sought to control the person she "loved", essentially drugging and repeatedly raping him. Voldemort probably felt some initial comfort from Nagini given their situation, and the fact that she was a snake gave him some amount of control over her, which added to his trust of her. Thus made her a horcrux. Once this was done, however, with the Voldemort's control strenghthened and the fact that Nagini was in a way voldemort himself, Voldemort fell in love with the only person he ever truly cared about: Himself. Also, I've got a fan-theory/head-canon that I've mentioned in other videos about the relationship between the two that I'll not directly mention here as it seems to have angered a couple people. :)
