Lockheed Martin, in collaboration with defense company CoAspire, revealed a new weapon at this week’s Sea Air Space 2024 exposition.
The company unveiled the Mako, a previously unseen air-launched hypersonic missile.
The missile is being pitched to the U.S. Navy and Air Force.
At the CoAspire booth, a mockup of the Mako missile was displayed alongside graphics illustrating its integration with the F-35 Lightning II.
The name “Mako” is derived from the fastest shark in the sea.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why Mako could be a game changer for the US military?

We have already loaded this weapon inside the F-35. We have high hopes for it

The video says that the MAKO has a rocket engine which is something I haven't heard Lockheed mentioning at all. I highly doubt it that suddenly we can produce hypersonic cruise missiles whose propulsion is a 100 year old rocket engine technology. And I especially doubt that MAKO could be such a relatively small missile that can fit inside F-35's weapon bays, unless it's scramjet powered... Anyway, an interesting missile, and if it could really become operational tomorrow and be massively, and relatively cheaply produced, I say start the stamping machines and let's put them on every US tactical and strategic aircraft in our inventory...

@@verdebusterAP@verdebusterAP There's a difference between the Air 2 air and attack cruise missile. The first one flies with a powered flight for the first 50-100 seconds and then coasts towards its target while the cruise missile has to fly low in the atmospbere where the Air is dense. Ths type of flight is completely different.. Boost glide hypersonic missile is another story all together.. Massive difference with a cruise missile which has to "cruise" during the whole flight.

@@verdebusterAP You're grosely wrong.. The name "cruise" in cruise missile implies the missile is cruising on its own power throughout its flighpath, relatively close to the surface. A2a missile coast 80% of its flight path in the upper less dense part of the atmosphere. They are fucking not the same..

@@tornado-s-2012”The Russians” have nothing like this lmao. Their “hypersonics” are a fraud. The Kinzhal is just a regular ballistic missile and the Zirkon really only reaches speeds of around Mach 3, well short of the hypersonic threshold (Mach 5), which we know for sure because that’s the speed that the Patriot system picked up before it shot it down. Both Zirkon and Kinzhal have repeatedly been intercepted in Ukraine. Russia has no modern hypersonic (maneuverable at hypersonic speeds, anything else isn’t impressive whatsoever and has been around for half a century) weapons. China is a bit different, but they also have no proof for weapons that can maneuver at hypersonic speeds although they have the funds and the brains to pull it off - Russia doesn’t. The only country who could prove these capabilities so far is the US. MAKO, LRHW, and AGM-183A all exist and work.
@nasabielas
@nasabielas 4 месяца назад
One important fact not mentioned is that it is not just a hypersonic "speed alone" missile because we already have those. It is truly hypersonic because, unlike Russian so-called hypersonic missiles, it can actually maneuver as well, making it harder to take down. And yes, it can actually fit into the F-35 internal weapons bays, and that is impressive, as it can approach without external stores in stealth mode and take crap out. This is a huge advantage because China and Russia don't have true stealth aircraft. Kinda stealthy is not stealthy.

When I first heard about the Mako Lockheed Martin hypersonic missile I viewed it with extreme suspicion as a bit too good to be true. The size of the Mako is similar to the AIM-54C Phoenix air-to-air weapon that had a max range 114 miles and top speed of Mach 5. Considering improvements in technology since the days of the AIM-54C’s inception of 1986, it seems a hypersonic weapon could be possible without breaking physics. Nonetheless, the energy required of a non-air breathing hypersonic missile of the size Mako with a sustained Mach 5 plus and 200-mile range would be to the very limits of existing technology. Solid rocket missiles have short burnout time, optimal high apogee, and glide to target at speed. The technology of maneuver on the dive in at these speeds was first demonstrated with a none deployed version of the Pershing 2 missile. I still am skeptical that the Mako is not much more than a souped-up AIM-54C. An improved version of the Phoenix might still be a useful arrow in the warfighter’s quiver.

@metatechnologist Месяц назад
Watch Sandbox on this. It (supposedly) doesn't need an apogee curve to go hypersonic. It'd be nice if does work.

If Zircon were functional, Russia would be using it. They aren't. If they were, we would at least have pieces of it. We don't. Every piece of ordinance Russia uses has very high failure rates, without exception. Therefore, we know Zircon doesn't work. Zircon is as functional as Kinzhal is hypersonic. As far as Mako is concerned, I have no doubt that it will do everything they say it will do. That is the history of US weapon systems. However, the question is "will Lockheed-Martin actually sell it at the price point they say they will?" The LRLAP for the Zumwalt class went from a cost of 35k in 2004 to 1M when the program was cancelled. They worked fine, but the cost increase was ridiculous. Lockheed-Martin could sell Mako to every nation that uses the F-35. That should reduce the cost enough to keep it under control. However, I'll believe it when I see it.
