I am so encouraged to hear of Alice Dearing, she is a good role model. I am a woman of color and swim masters. I know all too well that people of color are not expected to know how to swim, but we definitely exist and we definitely can swim! Ha! Occasionally a few people are surprised when they see me swim, but I have learned over the years most people really leave their preconceived ideas behind and treat me kindly. Swimmers, we’re a unique bunch. Thanks for this interview, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will look into Alice’s platforms.
Thank you for busting those myths!! I always loved to swim since I was little. I started doing triathlons five years ago & love it - especially open water. My first open water swim was a disaster because I couldn’t see. I have since gotten prescription goggles. It is very calming to swim open water. As an older swimmer, there are not many of us who swim consistently let alone open water. All the best to you and motivate life long black swimmers. I am with you.
