That's exactly what my husband and I did. I got married in a leather mini dress (it was the 90's), something I already owned, ditched the rings, and my hubby wore a leather jacket and jeans. We got married at the court house and had a party at home with our closest friends and family. I think the booze costs more then getting married at the court house. We went to a local hot springs for our honeymoon (super cheap) and it all costs less than a eight hundred dollars. We've been married for 24 years. We put our saving towards our 3-bedroom condo not a one day event, and it's almost paid off. Sorry big wedding are over rated.

It makes sense. The more money you spend on a wedding , the more you care about the event itself rather than the person you're marrying. If you have a cheap and simpler wedding, it shows that you don't care as much about the ceremony and just want to spend time with your SO. Obviously, there are exceptions. Some people just want a nice, fancy wedding. But you don't need to go overboard and spend like 30k just for a party.

I wish to experience it. Solo living isn't exciting. I couldn't survive the friendless lifestyle long term.

My wedding was a process. And long and involved process. But even though I would do it all again because it was a fun time, I tell all of my friends who aren't married yet to just go to city hall. Buy a nice dress and suit, totaling about $300 together, and then have a big party afterwards at the house or something. It can be done in a matter of days.

The weather was good and everybody enjoyed it. Instead of spending $900 on a DJ like we had originally planned, for instance, my nephew played DJ for 20 bucks, using my phone and an $8 Bluetooth speaker. We bought some flowers, but they were all live ones in pots. We danced, ate pizza, and drank cheap champagne in our own backyard while listening to old love songs. It was glorious. With the money we saved, we instead bought 10 acres of recreational land that we'll have for the rest of our lives. (My idea).

It's a fact. The institution of marriage has nothing to do with love, sure there are symbolic meanings/gestures but it is more for legal and financial benefits. If there is more focus, time spent and planning on the wedding then the relationship preceding it, there's a good chance the marriage will dissolve shortly after.

We did the ceremony, outfits, rings and reception for £500 and a house party with friends. We were given £750 in gifts. If you can't go completely self sufficient, surely making a profit is the best kind of wedding?

As a person who is both a bit of a blacksmith and has done a little jewelry work (even made a couple of silver rings, they really are rather different. And you probably don't want a steel or iron ring, it's one of the many metals which leave colored marks on prolonged contact with skin (as do aluminum and copper, while silver, nickel, gold, and titanium don't I believe). Still, fucking awesome. That's the sort of thing I'd want to do, though I don't even like the legal aspect of marriage. Just a ceremony and commitment, if I need to get the government involved in my relationship it's not one worth having.

My hubby and I spent less than 3000 on ours. We got married in the mountains and we spent all the leftover money on an extra vacation! Honestly, the most expensive part was my dress at 500 bucks. The whole thing was pretty awesome, but we went totally nontraditional. I even wrote our ceremony since I had a 10 year old daughter we wanted to be a part of the whole thing. We bought her a silver locket and my hubby gave it to her before we kissed.
