Started BJJ a little over a year ago at 40. It makes you feel alive and thankful that you're healthy enough to participate in something so difficult. I can't scramble and shoot blast doubles like the 20 somethings can, but I can hold my own. No man wants to be considered feeble. BJJ helps fight off the age demons and keeps you sharp. That line from the movie "Act of Valor" always comes to mind. "Before my father died, he said the worst thing about growing old was that other men stopped seeing you as dangerous. I've always remembered that, how being dangerous was sacred, a badge of honor. You live your life by a code, an ethos. Every man does. It's your shoreline

Bjj is a great sport and is very humbling. Lot's of great people can be found in bjj dojos. I took up bjj before I turned 40 but quit at 48. This was partly due to injury but I found that despite some serious effort, my progress just stopped. My aim was to get purple by 50 but it started to look like I would never achieve it despite the effort so I lost motivation. Classic blue belt syndrome I suppose. My advice for anyone over 40 going into bjj is to make sure that you have an instructor who 'gets' you, because trust me, the body does change from the mid forties onwards no matter how fit you are. Also, rolling with people your own age is important because some younger guys can go too heavy and cause injuries. In terms of the street fight arguments-- forget them. Street fights are not fights at all but violent interactions and no martial art or combat sport can fully prepare you for everything that might come your way in such situations.
@JJ.ermenegildofregna

Good post. Especially the last part. All this nonsense about which martial art is better for "real street fighting". None and all. Real street fighting is another story.

Well said, my friend. I'm curious, were the injuries due to BJJ? I try to stick to the older guys when rolling but for some reason the heart thinks I can do what the body is unable to....ANNNND, I get injured....Thank you for watching and commenting! 👊🙏
@scarfholdgraphicsmedia9501

@@midlifebjj The injury was at my first club. Firstly I lost all carteledge in my big toe joints due to kicking pads. I had surgery, but every training day was followed by pain in the feet the next few days which persists to this day. The next injury was with a guy my age but he was close to purple and I was still not blue. He hated losing. We were the only two down that night plus the instructor. The role was hard. He wragged me about hard. As I tried to get to my feet I heard a loud pop: my left bicep tendon snapped leaving the muscle hanging down my arm. I had surgery but the arm is weak and deformed. I never blamed the guy until he boasted about causing it one night. I quit that club after years of absolute loyalty. I joined another club but the instructor always felt I was damaged mentally from the other club. I got one tag in two years, despite regular attendance and competing. I stepped up my training, even training early in the morning before work. When the time came for another tag or two I was left hanging. I know that it's not just about belts but I was gutted because I knew that I couldn't train at that level of commitment any longer without progressing. My aim was to get purple and to start training older guys.

@midlifebjj
@midlifebjj Год назад
Sounds like a good topic. Works got me stretched. Traveling a lot these days but still rolling…not as much but I’ll never quit. Here are some tips: 1) relax in the first few minutes - don’t get winded. You may need the wind later. 2) careful with the grips - they wear quickly in tournaments due to tension a and stress. Someone completely new to tournaments will lose due to grips! I’ve heard the stories so when I did my first tournament, I kept the grips loose until I ended them. 3) don’t eat heavy…I ate a very light breakfast (toast and 1 egg) 4) bring a backpack because it can be a long day. 5) bring water (no brained) and 6) I brought bread to eat a slice if I was hungry. Its light and doesn’t upset the stomach if the nerves are getting to you 7) Warm ups: don’t skip the warm ups! There should be an area to work up a little sweat. Don’t roll cold.

Helio gracie believed in survival(SELF DEFENSE ) mindset first,which is why we must use gloves as part of the self defense learning process. Most clubs say they teach self defense, but way too many black belts can't defend a punch or headlock standing or on the Ground. We must all thoroughly study the gran masters teaching methods before they are eventually lost forever !,,
@midlifebjj
@midlifebjj 2 года назад
So true! If you're not learning how to slip punches and get close to your opponent for take-downs AND/OR you're not learning how to defend the standing/ground headlock & guillotine - consider asking "why". Appreciate the comment! 🙏

I turn 59 next week and thinking about starting to take classes. My friends think I’m an idiot. I love watching MMA and I love watching grappling like the Danaher death squad with Gordon Ryan...I just LOVE it. It is a human chess match and fascinates me. My wife and I are retiring in 3 years and will be traveling outside the country and it would give me more confidence if I felt like I can get in better shape and protect my wife and myself if something comes up that we can’t run away from. 59 is way over 40....but I really want to give it a shot. Thoughts ???

Almost 52 years old. Recently, due to COVID, I have not been on the Mat (since March). Don't know how long I can stay away but for now, I am more concerned about staying safe for myself and my family. With that said, I do BJJ as it helps me stay focused mentally and physically: when practicing BJJ, one is always solving problems - trying to figure out a puzzle. Hopefully through sweat and repetition, one gets better and better at it and in the process lose some of the beer gut. It also keeps me humble, reminding me that anyone can kick my butt however, I am a "hard out," I have a skill which they will have to deal with. Making GREAT friends of all ages is also great for old guys. In this world of tablets and iphones, having human to human conversations is a lost art especially for guys in my age group who did not grow up with these technologies.

So other reasons. You are building resilience. Problem solving skills. Learning skills. At over 40 you tend to be more mature and susceptible to losing so therefore u understand more so that it requires time to get better. And it gives you supreme confidence yet at the same time it humbled you dramatically. Those are the ones I believe you missed. And that’s right off the top of my head. I believe there’s more. Oh and I think I may actually get hurt less than my younger peers bc I’m a lot faster at tapping earlier.
