Why Mercedes is in a major F1 conflict with Ferrari and Red Bull

Mercedes has barely troubled Ferrari and Red Bull in Formula 1 this season but is now in conflict with them off-track in a BIG way.
The world champion team was at the heart of a huge argument over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, after the FIA made an initial attempt to intervene in the dispute over the porpoising and bottoming out suffered by the 2022 cars.
Ferrari and Red Bull have pushed back against a last-minute and then quickly-postponed technical directive issued on the eve of the Montreal event, prompting Mercedes boss Toto Wolff to label the political games “pitiful”.
Suddenly, a topic that was only bubbling away in the background until recently, is now one of the most controversial stories of the season - and one that looks far from settled.

I find it interesting that wolf is taking such a strong stance on safety and calling for swift and drastic changes, yet has been all too happy to let his drivers go out with setups that have as much proposing as they have. I guess driver safety is only important if everyone else gets brought down as well.

Although Wolff obviously has his own voice, it is the driver who ultimately chooses the setup for the car. If the driver wishes to sacrifice ride quality over performance, then there is nothing Wolff can do. Go tell a 7 time world champion, like Lewis, to sacrifice performance; or a young hungry for success driver like George. Not in a million lives they would sacrifice performance. I am 100% sure that Horner and Red Bull would do the exact same if they were in the same position.

Ross Brown said in the beginning that the porpoising was something familiar to constructors of racing cars and could be fixed over time. Everybody agreed on that stance. Now only some teams seem to be in trouble because of their designs. It is quite clear that Mercedes doesn't want to exchange competitiveness for driver comfort. The FIA simply should protect the drivers by putting black flags if the porpoising is beyond reasonable parameters. THAT would be fair.

@@alanjm1234 lol you drank that toto koolaid, huh? Read the Technical directive. You are allowed to make substantial changes to the floor(planks and skids) which were illegal at the beginning of the season since you had to do that in pre-testing. It seems Mercedes had done so knowing full well knowing it was illegal. THAT is why some teams are protesting Mercedes. Because Mercedes knew their car and design was crippled without changing the regulations. So, they whined and made a circus out of this. Not only that but every team had 8-hour notice before Practice 1 and Mercedes had brought changes and installed them in both cars BEFORE they were in Canada meant they had it ready and were waiting for the "go ahead". From Lewis barely getting out of his car and saying it has compromised his health and might not be able to make it to Canada due to severe health issues. But what happened after FIA's Technical Directive? Hamilton: "I feel like I'm 17 again". Mercedes collectively put on a performance to try to influence the FIA into introducing a minimum ride height, aimed at reducing the performance of their rivals in a bid to become competitive again. This is painfully apparent to everyone who doesn't have LuLu glasses on. This backfired massively when the FIA put the emphasis on the teams to sort out the problem. Somehow over the weekend Mercedes exerted their disproportionate influence to force the FIA to accept it was the FIA's responsibility to resolve the problem. If Mercedes genuinely cared about driver health they would just raise the ride height of their car. Would honestly not miss Mercedes at all if they decided to follow through on their threats to pull out.

How long have you followed the sport? I mean, you are likely not entirely wrong in their motives not being (all) about safety, but teams playing hardball with the FIA has always been part of the game and the one to do it the most/best (worst!) is or was Ferrari. They still have veto rights as the only team because of their "historical importance", which I personally think is utter BS. I think they may even still get a load of extra money just for being Ferrari. So, yeah, the game is dirty. Always was and just cuz it's Merc trying to force an issue through now, doesn't mean the others are saints. Also, in recent years both RB and Ferrari have used the "we may not stick around unless this changes" threat.. That's why I ask how long you have been following because a lot of us grow immune to it after a while as on a long enough time line, it kinda all evens out. Still, it's BS, of course. But if you don't grow immune to it, you may just not be able to take the team fan hat off for long enough to see it for what it is.

It’s interesting that in the video summary the word “supposed” is only applied to the issue of sporting fairness (which is evidently a concern given any change here would be a mid season change that undoubtedly would have an effect on sporting issues) and not to Mercedes’ contention of safety (which is entirely within their hands to control by raising ride height and softening the suspension). Mercedes need to improve the dampers in their suspension and add that floor damper component that Ferrari has to prevent track strikes (car bouncing due to hitting the track, not the floor getting stalled/choked of its airflow). It's that simple. They've solved porpoising as of Spain. They then lost mechanical grip and low speed downforce in Monaco. They can get that back with modifications to tunnel inlets, floor edge elements, better damping for porpoising and track strikes, running the springs softer. Then perhaps trying to figure out how to improve the effectiveness of their wings, figuring out how to dampen oscillations in their tires.

With the ban on hydraulic suspensions, these cars simply can't handle bumps nearly as well as previous years' cars.
