Why Metallica Couldn't Find A Better* Bassist

*read again - there cannot be anyone “better” to someone who’s best.
Robert Trujillo won Metallica bass audition in 2003, and has been the "new" Metallica bass player ever since - almost longer than Jason Newsted and Cliff Burton combined. He’s awesome, but why couldn't Metallica find an even better bassist? Was Rob actually that good, or just his competitors were that bad? Here's some of my thoughts and rare facts about the infamous Metallica bass audition.

Suicidal tendencies may not have been anywhere near as big but they were respected by their peers as the best in that thrash scene, almost unanimously agree and even Dave mustaine says it. Rob was the right fit for 4 main reasons: 1) He is insanely talented and technically proficient, he could play any song that he wanted to, or that they wanted him to play 2) Him playing fingerstyle reminded them of how cliff played back in the day 3) He was an easy going, no bullshit, no ego type guy in a band full of egos so he didnt clash with them 4) Rob already had years of writing, recording, playing and touring around the world with many different rock and metal bands to that point including Infectous Grooves, Suicidal Tendancies, Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne, Glenn Tipton, Jerry Cantrell, and Mass Mental, so he definately had the experience and practicality for the job

I met the band in 2009 after trying for over 23 years to get a backstage pass. I met Rob and he was the absolute nicest guy. He joked around with us, was really humble but outgoing and energetic. Lars was actually incredibly nice also, he made you feel like he was genuinely interested in what you were saying to him. That’s not easy to do when you meet fans every night for months on end and hear the same things over and over. Kirk was shy, reserved but still really nice. James was loud, laughed a lot, made fun of me because I forgot to take the lamination off the pick-guard he was signing (which is on video….ugh so embarrassing), but overall he was also really nice. He’s the one I looked up to the most, as I was primarily a rhythm guitarist because of him. Of course he’s the first one to come out, which means I didn’t get to calm my nerves down by meeting someone else first. Was still an amazing concert with amazing seats, I dragged my 70 year old father to it and now that he’s gone, it’s one of my favorite memories.

@@rabidmoose2682 Lars was actually the nicest out of the three of them, except Rob. Lars took the time to genuinely talk to me and listen to what I had to say, seemingly interested in what I was talking about. James and Kirk were nice but didn’t really take much time to talk or listen. Rob did, but there wasn’t much to really talk about with him other than complimenting him on his killer bass playing. So whatever people say about Lars, my experience with him was pleasant and interesting. He treated everyone there very well and was genuinely really nice and engaged with the fans. That can’t be easy to do when you meet as many people as he does, and he does it every single concert.

Exactly. I remember seeing Ozzy Osbourne live like five times in the 90s and I just remember thinking Rob was probably like top five best bass players alive at that time in the metal community. He’s a very good technical bass player, he’s got that funky element to his style that really pops, he’s got a great stage presence, I really couldn’t think of a better person to join the band other than him. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan of Jason’s and he was the bass player when I got into Metallica in the very early 90s. I was 12 years old when I became a fan of Metallica and Cliff died when I was six years old so it’s not like I have a memory of Cliff Burton being the bass player. I acknowledge Cliff is probably the greatest ever but to me Jason was always just as much a part of the band is the other guys and I hated that he left. But if we can’t have Jason in the band, I think Rob is really the best bass player we could hope for to fill that spot. It’s crazy thinking about it, but Rob has been in the band longer than Jason and Cliff combined were in the band.

When you're as big as Metallica, you gotta be the whole package. Not just technically accomplished (for instance, I would never doubt Les claypool's chops), but also someone who works well for the band, being cooperative and able to take a backseat. That said, I feel like Robert Trujillo is very underutilized in Metallica. I just feel like he's always be compared to someone (I get it, Cliff Burton was truly one of a kind!) As if he's eternally"filling in" for someone instead of being a truly new member. Idk, good bassists are in short order and I'd rather see em put to good use!

That's what I've always thought. I mean he was great but that's decades ago. Metallica was really disrespectful to Jason and it's time fans should stop disrespecting Rob and let it go. Metallica did great with Cliff but Metallica has also achieved so much without him.

And extremely sad(a friend of mine was touring with a band, playing bass, and their bus passed the Metallica bus "in the ditch", but didn't know who/what happened until getting to their next stop)! The only bright side was that all the real Metallica fans knew who would be their next bass player! The bassist for "Flotsam and Jetsam", who was excellent in that band, as well as "The biggest Metallica fan", more than any other bassist back then. No surprise there! I'll never forget before Jason even recorded w/Metallica. The Incredibly great bass intro from, I believe, his last "Flotsam and Jetsam" recording? We were young, smoking weed and taking LSD! And couldn't stop listening to that bad ass bass intro, lol!!! I'll need to give her a listening to now! Obviously, Robert Trujillo was the Future of Metallica, from the try outs especially, lol! Rob was a seasoned pro already by the time he joined Metallica, he'd been playing in various mega successful bands and doing the same touring machine as Metallica for years already. He's a good fit style-wise but he was also a just a great choice for his experience. I think they were older and wiser enough not to do all the hazing that Jason got, so he was always going to be safe in that respect. Oddly, none of the other bassists they auditioned had a background in heavy metal/thrash. Twiggy, Avery, Lohner - they're great rock musicians from heavy bands, but they're not thrash guys. Was never going work, like it wouldn't have with Claypool.

OOF! You’re description of the shaking knees and fingers not playing nice gave me flashbacks. I’ve played a little over 100 gigs and most were to empty rooms. However, the few big ones were terrifying for me even as a drummer. Shaking knees means double bass isn’t a good idea. Shaky hands means you grip the sticks too loose or too tight, and either way that means you’ll be dropping them constantly. At least with the sticks, I could make it part of my performance; if I dropped a stick, after the song I’d pick it up, yell at it, snap it in half and give each half to someone in the audience. It helped me connect with them in the moment and calm my nerves. I would love to hear more about your personal music endeavors if you ever put up videos about it!

I love Trujillo. He was in Metallica tribute band(s) prior to actually being in metallica. So he knew the songs already. I wish he would get more writing privileges however

Daaaaamn since 2003????? Time flies! He was the perfect choice for many reasons. Looks the part, sounds the part and is a chill humble guy who helps ground the band.

Cuz Rob is the best. He didn't join Metallica, Metallica joined Rob. Since the Suicidal days to Infectious to Ozzy, I knew since day 1 Rob oozes talent. That's why IMO he's the best rock bassist and hired gun there is.

Let‘s be honest - Rob was the only one who really deserved the spot. The energy, the enthusiasm and the presence, it was all there. Most of the other dudes looked like they were at a job interview looking to make some nice cash. Rob was there rocking out with his idols, he would have taken that spot for free if he had to. Metallica could not have wished for a better addition to the band.

They didn’t respect the fan aspect with Jason. Gotta disagree. But I agree that Rob has a childish enthusiasm which is absolutely necessary.

Rob has been my favourite bassist out of all three after looking deeper into his work. He's a beast that can groove and play amazingly well.
