In Spain we also use a flat sheet. It's way hygienic to use it and it saves you the trouble of washing your duvet cover too often because it doesn't get "as dirty" having the flat sheet between the duvet cover and you Edit: lol a lot of you are getting confused with the "hygienic" part. What I meant is that, given that the duvet cover is harder to take off, wash change, etc, it's something that ppl may not do that often so having a sheet in between that is easier to take off means it'll be washed more often, that's why I said hygienic. Maybe not the best word but you get the point
Yeah I was going to say I have a weighted blanket on my bed and those things can’t really be washed a flat sheet is the way to go and I’m fairly young and everyone I know still uses a flat sheet
Living in Florida, in the heat and sun - sometimes all you want is the flat sheet on your body at night. It’s something light, soft and cool. If you get too cold, just grab the comforter/quilt/blanket.
I'm a Millennial and I hate sleeping without a flat sheet! I don't like that my skin is touching my blankets that are too bulky to wash often. Along with being nice and soft and cooler than a blanket, it's so much easier to wash!
@@Mobin92 if someone did use a duvet, it is significantly more work to peel the cover off the duvet, wash it, and put it back on. Compared to washing a flat sheet and throwing it on the bed. Well, I have duvet cover on my duvet that gets changed/washed as often as a flat sheet would... The only time I use a flat sheet is in the summer, when that's what I use as a blanket 🤷🏼♀️
For those who may not be up on the debate: The hygienic alternative to the flat sheet is the duvet cover. That is what you wash every week to get your dead skin cells out of there without having to wash the entire think blanket.
@@trippykay it takes one minute! Wash it inside out... Put your arms into it... and grab the left far corner with left hand... right far corner with right hand ... then get hold of 2 corners of duvet and shake it over. Job done in seconds!
It used to happen to me as a child or like maybe up until my teenage years since I moved around a lot more in my sleep, but yeah since like 16 or 17 my flat sheet never does that it always stays up with my duvet
It’s rare for me. I have a sheet that’s a bit longer than it is wider. So the sheets are tucked in very well and deep at my feet. But it isn’t so wide and it’s not tucked in much at the sides. I feel since there’s less blanket on the sides it doesn’t tangle much
Never happened to me before, either. I have a linen duvet cover so maybe it's extra grippy on the cotton top sheet. I use the top sheet so I don't have to wash the duvet cover so often. Some people apparently don't even have those and just wash their blanket weekly. Not even an option for me as my comforter is full of wool batting and needs to be dry cleaned (I can't sleep with polyester, it's suffocating, plus I'm trying to eliminate polyester and acrylic fabrics from my home anyway). So that thing is only getting washed once or twice a year, as is recommended.
i just don’t even bother with the flat sheet. i have very soft and fuzzy blankets that i want to feel. i don’t want to block out all that softness with a flat sheet Edit: damn i just wanted to talk about a soft blanket, not get called disgusting by people who have middle aged men and anime profiles

Used it in hotels around the world. But I prefer the German way (also used in some/most other European countries, I've been told). So you have kind of a cover, like a pillow cover for the duvet. So there is a layer between you and the duvet and it doesn't slip away when you kick it at night. I hate when I touch the duvet directly in hotels and airbnbs
I'm Portuguese, so I think we use something like that, our sheets have one part that is put over the mattress and one over , that u use to cover yourself, then u can add blankets,if u want to be extra warm ,or just a duvet . I always was shocked seeing how was made in the "american" way
@@justacutie. So if the apartment I was at in Lisbon is any indication the portuguese way and the German duvet cover are quiet different. The German thingy is closed all around the duvet. It has buttons or a zipper to close it. The cover in Lis bon was a blanket all around the duvet but it was not closed so it slipped at night anyway. However we only slept with the sheet there anyway because it was so hot.
I tried a duvet and had to fight just to get the cover back on the blanket lol. With a flat sheet, I just lay it on top and tuck it in. Maybe I’m just bad at duvets idk
It's a hygiene issue and should depend on your choice of blanket. Quilts are bulky and sometimes delicate and do not wash well. A top sheet will absorb the sweat and skin particles you shed while sleeping. Duvet covers can be laundered easily enough and therefore, a top sheet can be forgone.
im australian as well. i live in a hot area. the issue is that im autistic so i cant sleep unless its very very specific to how i want it. i cant sleep with a flat sheet. i have a fluffy blanket and on top of that is a blanket that isnt thick enough to be a duvet but is slightly thicker than the fluffy one and its puffy. i also cant stand wrinkly mattress covers but, i cant put them on properly due to small living space and my bed needing to be wedged in a corner. this means that mattress covers get frustratingly ripped off at 2 in the morning and not returned for at least a couple of nights bc i cant sleep. to combat the heat with all of this i have a fan constantly running while i sleep. the background noise from the fan helps me sleep as well, i cant sleep without noise.
It's called the top sheet and its purpose is to keep body sweat off of your blankets so you don't need to wash your blankets as often as you wash your sheets. It makes sense!
@@harrymarsee2782 I live in the UK, where it's standard to have a duvet with a duvet cover. Most people stopped using blankets, so it's a surprise to find they are still in use in some places! @@nicolab2075 Thank you for clarification; but, I really don't understand why people would consider duvets to be better. Duvets are difficult to get into a washing machine and blankets are still used, far more than duvets, at least in the US.
@@harrymarsee2782 I'm not saying duvets are better, just that we don't see blankets much nowadays. You don't have to wash the duvet often, just the cover. I suppose it has the advantage of not slipping around like a sheet - but I think the reason they caught on (in the 1970s, I seem to remember) was that it's so easy to make the bed. You just pull the corners of the duvet, and it's done.
USE A FLAT SHEET FOR PETE’s SAKE!!!! I have a goose down duvet which is in a decorative duvet cover and I do not wash it every time I wash or change my sheets, there fore the flat sheet offers a protective barrier from my body to the duvet. I can also 100% tell you that my flat sheet never gets kicked to the bottom of my bed either! FYI hotels do not change/wash their comforters each time a guest leave, so you’d better hope they use flat sheet for hygiene sake😮
This. I'm in the UK, use a flat sheet and have never ended up with the flat sheet at the bottom of the bed. It is tucked under the matress and stays tucked on two and half sides. Obs top is untucked and part of side I get in on. Also I dislike fitted sheets, they are impossible to fold neatly after ironing. With TWO flat sheets er you can even up wear on the two sheets, since the bottom sheet gets more wear and also flip end for end so your heels dont wear a thin patch in the sheet so soon. The extra time for making bed is a complete red herring it is like an extra minute a day, if that.
In my country we use bottom sheet, pilow cover and blanket cover. Then change them when necessary. Some ppl put decorative duvets on top if the want, then remove them before sleep. Decorative duvets aren't meant for sleeping, they're a decoration.
This makes me laugh. I use a flat sheet, even when camping, for a few reasons: it means your blankets are protected from shedding skin cells and body oils onto the blankets, which are harder to clean. It's also, oddly enough, a really good insulating layer. I even use a flat sheet INSIDE MY SLEEPING BAG when camping. It adds a lot of warmth without adding weight. And they are useful for other things as well. I've recycled them into curtains or clothes, table cloths, or even tied my laundry up in them. Some of those things a duvet cover will do, some not. But I can't find them in any of the local stores, in the sizes I need, and they're a lot more work! It DOES NOT take longer, and they won't come undone, if you do it right.
Most ppl who dont use flat sheets have something called a duvet (im guessing what you would consider a comforter) that has a cover that's the same thickness as a bedsheet that goes over the mattress or the pillowcase. You can wash the cover super easily each week, and the duvet and pillows rarely need washed, basically only if you spill something on them. Its way less effort than a flat sheet and just as hygienic :)
@@ameisweirdx I find it much harder to put on a duvet cover personally! I tried one for awhile, and had to fight with it every time I put the cover back on. Flat sheets are perfect either, but all I have to do is lay it on top of the bed and tuck it in so
@@alexreid1173 once you get used to changing it, it only takes a minute ;) it's like riding a bicycle, not difficult, but if you're not used to it, then you'd have to give it a while ;)
As an American and millennial, flat sheets keep the bed from getting too hot and too cold. It helps tremendously and allows a texture barrier between you and the blanket. I wouldn't go without it.
istg this is the most useless video ever, if you like the flat sheet, use it. If you don't, fold it up in the corner. If people are really debating about bed sheet personal preference then some of us SERIOUSLY have too much time
Millennial married couple here - I absolutely cannot go without the flat sheet. Especially when it’s hot, I throw off the blanket and just cover with the sheet. Forever will always have the flat sheet.
I hate flat sheets, because they don't actually keep you from touching your blanket, since they always end up in a crumpled pile at your feet throughout the night. So I just have a duvet cover that I wash the same amount I would wash a sheet. And I have several smaller and lighter blankets to either use during the summer or to use under my duvet during winter.
You must toss and turn in your sleep. I have always slept with a flat sheet for 64 years. Also have a doona cover on the quit. If you get too hot even in winter you just sleep under the sheet.
Put the flatsheet on so that it is able to come up and over the duvet. When you get into bed you pull the sheet over top of the duvet and then sleep like that. Our sheet never ends up at our feet.
You're not making your bed properly then. The flat sheet should be pulled taught, the comforter or quilt put on top, but shifted down 4 to 10 inches (depending on your preference). Then you fold the top of the flat sheet over the top of the comforter. The flat sheet gets tucked in at your feet and a few feet up the sides to hold it in place. The comforter never gets tucked in. The more you fold the flat sheet over, the better it will hold. I recommend you fold it over a good way. Also if you're tossing and turning so much as to cause the sheets to separate, maybe try sleeping with a thinner blanket (you're probably getting hot), or padding (could be uncomfortable), or turning your thermostat down a few degrees at night (which makes you sleep better).
Everyone is right. The flat sheet should come up and over the top of your blanket or duvet. It's not going to run away from you. Maybe you kick a lot? If that's the case your blanket is probably off the bed by morning too.
As much as I love using duvet covers, I must admit that the task of putting them on and tying them is annoying. I love using a top sheet to extend the time between washing the duvet cover. Also, if you have good quality sheets, you will prefer the feeling of the top sheet.
@@enni4802 Some comforters have loops (mine don't lol) on the corners and some duvet covers have ribbon on their inside corner so you can secure the comforter's corners to the inside duvet's corners, and that way the comforter doesn't bunch up while it's inside the duvet cover. It's not absolutely necessary, I haven't had this problem even though I can't tie up the corners until I sew loops on myself.
I'm in Europe and haven't ever used a flat sheet, however everyone uses a duvet cover for the blanket. It's a piece of cloth that the blanket is put in and it's only open on one short side. Basically like a pillowcase, just bigger. It's recommended to change your duvet covers every 2-4 weeks to prevent bacteria accumulating.
I love flat sheets. I'm disabled and it's way easier to layer, not get feet trapped in duvet and with an adjustable bed it doesn't ping off when I adjust... But I lived with my Granpa for 18 months and his bed making influenced me 😸 So I do flat sheet on mattress, then flat sheet as a top sheet, then blanket or duvet with cover weather dependent. It's a really good system although I think in uk many just do duvet with cover.
I'm an older millennial and I love flat sheets. I like being tucked in tight and the flat sheet helps to keep a tight tuck. You don't have to wash your blanket as often. And in the summer I might ditch my blanket and just use a flat sheet.
Yes, it keeps you from getting the blanket dirty! I guess these newer generations never did a hard day's work and don't sweat ever so it's not a thing...
I got dogs so I use the flat sheet to keep me clean from hair more than the blanket clean from me. As long as I keep my bed even half ass made I have a clean warm soft spot to slip in like an envelope.
The reason flat sheets are important in hotels is that a lot of people sleep directly on the blanket and it isn’t worth it for the hotel to clean your blanket every time someone checks out because you can only put 2 maybe 3 in a washer before it gets too heavy and starts destroying the washer. That flat sheet acts as a barrier between whatever the last person did with the blanket and yourself so please use the flat sheet. It’s just more economical to wash a flat sheet as 10-12 can fit in a washing machine without breaking it. Source: I work in a hotel
The top sheet is there to save you from having to wash the quilt/duvet/blanket every week! Those heavier blankets are expensive, often need dry cleaning or take FOREVER to dry. I use a top sheet for that reason and also because I get hot at night and having the top sheet is like having a nice thin blanket to cover up with! Lol
I mean I think you’d have to wash the top sheet just as much as the duvet cover. And they are the same price, you can get bedding for £8 in the UK, and a sheet topper would cost the same price for the same quality, so it’s just pointless in the UK.
You just need to wash the cover it’s the same as washing the flat sheet… also I have a rotation of blankets so the time for them to be washed isn’t a factor for me personally. But instead of a flat sheet I use a cover as well as a soft fuzzy blanket as a flat sheet it’s thin but not uncomfortable like a sheet is
Pretty sure the sheet ending at the bottom of the bed is because people don't realize they are supposed to sleep between the sheets instead of on top of them.
This would happen a lot to me in my sleep actually. Or shoved between the wall and bed. My problem is I just don't like cotton or similar type apparently. I now use poler fleece(fluffy material) sheets during winter and don't loose the sheets anymore. Still have a problem during summer since it's to warm for fluffy sheets but at least winter I can keep them on lol.

@@BryanM86 I agree with you. Washing your duvet is like washing your winter jacket. Yeah you do it when it becomes appropriately used, but you don’t do it every week. And like your jacket, you don’t want that right against your bare skin so you wear a shirt.
@@daniellemartin9896 I wonder if it has something to do with the quality and price of your bedding. When I was young I would throw everything on my bed into the was together and dry in the dryer every week. Today with bedding that costs literally more than my first car, I’d never subject my duvet or cover to that kind of abuse. Not to mention that the more decorative coverlets and duvet are not necessarily soft to the touch. You want that 800 thread count Pima cotton flat sheet envelope to insure proper air flow and comfort. Seems more environmentally friendly to just wash a fitted and flat sheet every Wednesday as opposed the the whole lot.
I'm 27 and definitely use a flat sheet. My husband runs cold and I run hot. I end up with just the flat sheet most nights and he is under like 3 blankets. I even saved my money and bought one set of precious linen sheets to help with temperature regulating. I'll never go back.
I'm a flat sheet loving millenial, i just prefer a sheet between me and my covers. This is not because it keeps the blankets and covers clean, i have too many pets, i wash it often. And not because my covers aren't snuggly and soft, they are, super snuggle and soft. It's because sheets are just fresher, they make sure I don't overheat and they feel nice. However, in my household, they're dying. I'm the only one that uses them, my husband hates the sheets, my daughter does too, and as far as making the bed takes longer, it does, but I'm also a housewife, so it's not like a minute more of fixing the flat sheet will make much of a difference.
Gen z and flat sheets are amazing. I use it as a layering thing just like when you go out in the cold. You might have a plane t-shirt on (flat sheet) then you might get a bit cold so you throw on a light jacket ( blanket) then if you get really cold you can pull the covers over (comforter/duvet). I can always make sure that I'm at a comfy temperature.
In Europe we have duvet covers (kinda like a pillow case but for your blanket/duvet), and some of them have juste a narrow opening at one end so you don't have to tie/button up anything, others have ties or buttons. Once you get the hang of it it's actually quite easy to put it on (there are several techniques). And in the summer you can just ditch the blanket and only keep the duvet cover (it's not much heavier than a flat sheet). I couldn't imagine using a flat sheet because ok, it adds a layer between your body and the uncovered blanket (if it even stays put the whole night which really doesn't always happen...), but only on one side. Except that I often have my arms on the outside of the blanket, sometimes a leg out or even kind of "hugging" my blanket which means I would definitely touch it and dirty it if I had only a flat sheet which is unhygienic, so overall a hard pass for me. Also, when you don't have a washing machine or only a small one (which is common over here), it's a real pain to wash your blanket because you have to use a laundramat, but with a duvet cover you can definitely wash your blanket only once a year or smth (if you wash your sheets often enough of course), so less of a pain overall.
I use them. If they are ending up on your feet at night it's probably because you didn't make the bed properly. The flat sheet folds over the top of your blanket.
We use covers in Germany for the entire blanket, which can be washed weekly, so you don't have to wash your blanket as often. I mean flat sheets disappear somewhere at night leaving you sweat all over your blanket
What kind of acrobatics are you doing in bed (aside from the kind that only needs covers for specific body parts) that could cause a flat sheet to end up that far from where it started? If you’re running marathons in your sleep, you need to see a doctor about restless leg syndrome or something.
@@Wyrnikh It's normal, some people move around a lot while sleeping. for example I sometimes wake up with my blanket on the floor and my Pillow on the floor too

Duvets are so good!! I have a thin one cause my room gets warm asf in summer and then an extra super soft blanket i can add in winter - way better than a flat sheet
I love a flat sheet because I always fold my quilt and blanket back and only cover up with my flat sheet. If I get cold then I just pull my blanket up over me too. I never sleep with my quilt or comforter, they always get folded back and they last longer.
i never slept under the flat sheet so i stopped adding it on. i like the weight of a thicker blanket even in the summer. i use weighted blankets too. this is good for laundry too bc i have now doubled my bedding. american btw
How are you washing your weighted blanket? I use a flat sheet a blanket, a comforter and a weighted blanket in a duvet cover. The flat sheet has nothing to do with you preferring a heavy weight.
@@PsychGirlRaveni wash the cover of the weighted blanket. for the flat sheet it isn’t about the weight but rather about how i move under blankets. i’ve always kicked around during sleep so i just don’t use a flat sheet which is tucked under the mattress. i’d be re-tucking it too much and i just like my blankets i can shake out flat on top and i’m done
I think they come with the fitted sheets in Australia. I always thought they were for when it's hot, so you can't use the quilt, but you still want to be covered.
I have never heard about flat sheet before😂 Had to google it. Once I saw flat sheet in hotel and didn't know what it was so I just took it off because it was on my way😂 Edit: I read more comments and I think this is climate related. I always use a thick duvet with a cover and it's never too hot. In my area in summers temperature hardly gets over 20°C(like 70fahrenheit) and in winters temperature is usually between -10 and -30°C (about10 to -20 fahrenheit). Here no one uses flat sheets or just blankets as it would get too cold.
I disagree about your climate reasoning for the flat sheet. The flat sheet is supposed to go between your body and the duvet/comforter/blanket so that you don’t have to wash your nicer or heavier blankets as often, only the smaller lighter thinner linens are frequently washed. Personally, I don’t use it though and wash my covers just as often as the sheets. That being said, I am from the US and, despite a couple of the comments I’ve seen here, I literally have never met a single person in my life that only sleeps with the flat sheet on top of them. It’s either the flat sheet and the blanket of choice or only the blanket of choice. If I ever meet a sole-flat-sheeter I will immediately assume they’re a psychopath.
@@kennedyeckels4492 I have the flat sheet to keep the blankets clean, as the blanket is wool and can't easily be washed. Also in summer it can get hot enough you sleep with just the flat sheet as a cover, but no sheet at all isn't quite warm enough.

When we in Northern Europe travels to other countries, it's super weird for us to sleep with blankets. Most even have a summer and a winter duvet. Outside of america we don't use comforters as those are impossible to wash, we use a duvet and duvet cover. Even traditionally with the wool duvet(it weighs a million pounds so you always feel cozy) we use a cover that we wash constantly. Comforters really confused me when we moved here
That's another great reason for flat sheets. Besides being softer, it's also nice to be able to kick off or pull down your cover if it gets warmer, but still have a 'light' cover
in Ukraine we use blanket covers ( like the one for pillow but way bigger) it kinda substitutes a flat sheet, 'cause you can wash it (and not the blanket itself) but it stays all night on a blanket and won't "go anywhere" as it may happen with flat sheet

Maybe a UK thing but we put a cover over the duvet (blanket). That touches your skin and gets washed. The duvet never touches your skin and no flat sheet.
I'm an Australian and a millennial, I've always used a flat sheet. Mainly because our climate is constantly changing. One night it's too cold and you have layers with a water bottle; the next you just have the flat sheet and a fan going.
As a millennial 1990 my wife and I do not use those horrible flat sheets, first of all maybe you have the wrong blanket if you think the sheet is more cozy, it’s an extra layer for no purpose, it cost extra money for no reason, and an extra task to make the bed as well, it’s literally pointless
It's not pointless. It's to keep your oils, sweat etc off your blanket so it doesn't have to be washed as often. And also nice on hot nights to just use the flat sheet. I'd rather wash my flat sheet than my king size blanket in my washer once a week that's a waste of time and money.
What are you talking about?? The flat sheet is the thing that keeps the whole bed tidy: a properly folded and tucked top sheet keeps everything else in place and your blankets are then easily layered on and off. The only people who can't understand the value of flat sheets are people who were never taught how to make their beds properly when they first put the sheets on the bed: do it right and your whole bed stays cozy, adaptable and stable until you remove the sheets to wash your linens.
My mother was so fed up with us not "using" the flat sheets properly (aka kicking them off/bunching up when we tossed and turned while asleep and therefor unconscious) that she'd sewn them to our fitted sheets at the foot end and along one side. I rebelled so hard against this as an adult that I don't know if my kids or husband could even tell you what a flat sheet is.
@@drl5002 honestly, when I say this, it makes my mother sound like a nightmare but she was amazing. She had just a handful of quirks, but she went hard on them lol
Oh, my mother in law in Spain would tuck them in by the sides of the bed so tight, I would literally have to struggle to even get in the bed and then rip them apart to become free to move. It felt like a butterfly unravelling the cocoon.
If you tuck your flat sheet under the mattress it will not bunch up. If you don't have a flat sheet you would have to wash your blanket. That puts wear and tear on your washing machine, dryer and blanket. .
I have actually added my flat sheet back because the blanket although soft had moments of scratching in my lovely cotton sheet in between me and the blanket has become my new staple
That's freak me out so much ...i like to hugg my blanket or atleat put it between my legs a little and under my feet,i don't think a separate sheet would stay where it's supposed to be for long. A duvet cover is always where the blanket is and protects it from the dirt of your arms if you're putting them on top of the blanket when it's too warm to have them under. Also: just like your pillow,a blanket has a cool side too,but if u just have a sheet, that's still gonna be warm, unlike the upper side of the duvet cover ;)
In Florida we call the flat sheet a comforter for most of the months very rarely do I get to use an actual comforter without sweating and waking up cause of nightmares
@Aidy, it's hot and humid in the summer in the US even in places like Chicago and New York. It's brutally hot in the South. Chicago is very cold in the winter. They might have a flat sheet, a blanket and a duvet on top. I'm pretty sure that these practices are climate related.
In Italy using the flat sheet is the most common way to make the bed, in hotels too. Only in the past decade we have started to see duvet covers with no flat sheet added, especially because IKEA and Nordic countries traditions were becoming more popular. Now you can find both options but it's not what we have done traditionally for many many years.
There's a thing that has surprised me a lot about other countries. In Denmark, and maybe other Scandinavian countries, we don't sleep under blankets. We have this thing, which in Danish is called a "dyne", and it's like a blanket but stuffed with goose feathers or other insulating material. I personally think that's it's so comfortable and warm, that i can't even sleep without it. So imagine my surprise when i learned that it was only a regional thing.
it's used also in Central Europe, there are even specialized cleaners for goose feather blankets in our country, who can somehow clean the insides and put them into new fabric, so it can be used for decades this way. I have my duvet inherited from my grandmother and it's still ok.
I was so confused by all these comments too. In germany all blankets are filled for isolation. Less in summer more in winter. And we have a case for them like for pillows. They mostly come in pairs too so your pillow matches the blanket. And under that we only have fitted sheets and mattress. Army has non fitted sheets tho. Plus I love that cool sheet feeling as well. My issue is I’m trying to use separate “single sized“ blankets with my husband so we can avoid waking each other up in the night. I assumed that separate flat sheets with the single duvet would feel odd but maybe I should try it. It might stay-put.
Aw man this is the best thing I've seen today. It's a debate in my house but I never knew it was a "thing". We put a flat sheet on our bed but I don't sleep with it. My husband on the other hand nearly can not sleep without one. I get too hot with it and I end up wrapped up and waking up flailing and fighting for my life.
Yeah, although I keep the "flat sheet" on year round. Never know when you're going to have a hot night and want to throw off the SLIGHTLY thicker top layer
Millennial here! I definitely use a flat sheet! It’s so much easier to just wash the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillows/pillow cases instead of the whole comforter which takes a whole day to wash and dry.
Stopped using my flat sheet for many years. I just recently started using them again and I'm glad I did. I prefer a cool light sheet to a blanket when the summer nights are to warm.
Huh, I never saw the flat sheet anywhere except in hotels, and until now I thought they were a way for the hotels to tell us: "Yeah, we're too cheap to provide an actual blanket"
I'm an older millennial who lives in Florida. I love my flat sheet. Normally my husband and I each have our own. Sometimes it's all we use. But my inlaws don't use them, so I get all their flat sheets. Sometimes I use the flat sheet as a fitted sheet too, it stays on just about as well as a fitted it tucked properly. ❤️
I’m from Canada and I hated sleeping with a flat sheet growing up. I never put one on my bed and I had terrible night terrors that would cause me to get tangled up and panic more when I had to sleep in a bed with one. (The terrors were unrelated but waking was worse.) When I went backpacking in Europe, I stayed in hostels and slept in a sleep bag either under the provided comforter or in my sleeping bag and got more used to it. When I came home, I went back to sleeping without the top sheet. When my partner and I moved in together I noticed how quickly our comforter would get smelly and without a duvet cover, I would have to haul the thing up and down from the laundry room and go through the torture or trying to dry it every few weeks. Eventually, I broke down and started putting the top sheet on the bed (which my partner prefers anyways). It really helped with cleanliness of the bed and, as I now have medication for my sleep disorder, I no longer thrash in my sleep which means I don’t worry about waking up trapped in my bed. It still can’t be tucked in at the end of the bed but I’m kinda glad to have it. Especially on hot summer nights when the comforter is just too much.
I always use a flat sheet. It allows for more airflow between you and your quilt. This allows heat to escape so you don't get too hot. Also, in the summer, I can't sleep without a blanket and a flat sheet is perfect since it's super light. Only crazy people use a quilt when it's hot.
It helps move air and heat away from the body but also traps it between itself and the blanket instead of it going from you to the blanket directly and then out into the room. So while you feel less suffocated by the heat you actually have more around you acting like insulation and keeping the colder room from taking it from your body as fast keeping you warmer longer. And yes it is a great replacement for a blanket on warm nights where it is too hot for a blanket but too cool not to have one.
as long as it’s washed regularly and doesn’t itch you, I am definitely pro blanket. I have some lovely microfiber/fleece I think they are called in a couple different colours that are lovely behind a sheet or directly on your skin. I like them behind a sheet when the seasons change because it’s a slight filter when temperatures seem random.
Had a flat sheet until I moved to Europe and discovered the joy, the liberating freedom of individual duvets. Now my wife and I don’t fight over blankets anymore. It’s amazing.
I haven't used a flat sheet in YEARS. I hate that stupid thing. It tangles around my legs and makes me feel like I can't move. Even going to hotels that still have it, I pull it off and fold it up to put to the side on a table or something so it isn't in the way. (It also makes it easier for housekeeping to find because most of the time they're required to put it back when they make the bed up.)
Also, the fluffier blanket is a much preferred texture for people with extremely sensitive skin such as mine because itchy, rough, and generally not fun textures are more easily noticed on flat sheets.
Growing up in the Philippines, we just have a fitted sheet and a blanket and of course pillow. Sometimes our beds are covered in this mat where we sleep on top.😂
I'll still never forget how comfortable my grandma made my bed when I'd visit them, it was a good fold out couch with a topper, then a flat sheet, and a massive comforter. Never too hot or cold. It was wonderful.
