Why More Men Are Becoming Stay-at-Home Dads

More men are staying at home to take care of their families, according to a 2018 Pew Research report. Historically, economic downturns have forced men out of the labor force and into stay-at-home roles. "Perhaps as many as two million men were stay-at-home dads, depending on how you measure it, during the height of the Great Recession," says Sociology Professor Scott Melzer. "And if we look today at the pandemic, we have another economic calamity."
However, changes in women's workforce participation and women's advancement in education have also left lasting impacts on gender roles. In 2020, women made up more than half of the U.S. workforce for the first time. "Young women are actually outpacing young men now in terms of college degrees and many graduate degrees," says Kim Parker, Director of Social Trends Research at Pew Research Center.
Five dads tell CNBC Make It why they felt called to take on one of the world's most challenging jobs.

I have a friend who did that. Great Recession. His lawyer job was cut. His wife was a teacher with benefits. Simultaneously, they had a child with special needs...so insurance became a premium. I applaud him. He still took some part time shifts at the grocery store to make ends meet.

The sexist comments are quite disturbing. There’s nothing that says being a stay at home dad is a free hand out - it’s a lot of work and demanding. Focus your attention on the “why” people have to stay at home to take care of children - lack of child care support for families. Child care costs a quarter or half your total income, and if you are barely making by, you have to make the decision on who should stay home to watch the kids. You really going to tell me you would rather have someone who makes lower income continue to work because he’s a male, even though the female has the better income? GTFOH. Sounds like people need better financial advisers.

💯 agree. Also, affordable daycare or not, parental nurturing of children through full time stay at home care is a VERY IMPORTANT JOB. If more families could have a fulltime parent at home (mum or dad) it would go a long way in raising a society of healthy whole adults. We have normalized self parenting for kids as young as 10/12... Its not normal!! Sadly, ordinary families are being sacrificed on the alter of capitalism because can't afford decent childcare, can't afford staying at home to parent fulltime. #TheCostOfCapitalism

@@julm7744 Unfortunately, life isn't scripted, so it's impossible to predict the future. Most people start out in stable situations when they have kids, then later find themselves stranded. I know 4 different families that had free child care from healthy grandparents that then died of COVID. People that had amazing jobs and through no fault of their own their circumstances changed. People who were financially stable then a health crisis leaves them with 100's of thousands in crippling debt.... I can be a graphic designer from anywhere. I could also get another job in design pretty easily, but I know I would be taking a big pay cut which would put us squarely in the working just to pay for child care group. I’m not about taking a step back, I’d rather explore something new like working for myself while being there for my kids. @misshoneynevercame4832
@misshoneynevercame4832 3 года назад
@@ninjablack4347 I think this goes mostly for the lower income groups. If both make around $50K a year and they both want children, one of them probably needs to stay at home if childcare in their area is expensive. So women prefer a man who can provide a comfortable lifestyle while they stay at home and take care of the kids. It's just nature. It's unnatural for a woman to look for a man who will make her and the kids go hungry. Also men with a very high income can afford childcare which means the women don't have to sacrifice their careers if they want to have kids at any point. In case of the $100k vs $400k: most men who make less than their gf or wife have an issue with that. It's really annoying. One of my best friend's bf broke up with her after he found out she made a lot more money than him. Kinda sad because he left her heartbroken. Most men have ego issues.

The issue is, if a man hasn’t achieved enough in a career or profitable venture, and then becomes a stay at home dad at too young an age, he’s likely to become depressed. If he isn’t able to achieve these goals and feel that he fulfilled a purpose outside of his family, after his children grow up he will resent the wife who’s HAS achieved goals outside the marriage. His age at that time is his biggest hurdle which tends to increase depression. Lesson? Learn what you want to be way before you can become a father and achieve your goals in your twenties and early 30s WHILE you become a father. Any man who doesn’t do this is relying on a woman to do it for him.
