I thought this was a great video. The Mormon church is super interesting to me and I thought you captured the unsettling vibe super well. I’ve always wanted to know what was in the church and the narrative throughout was super well told.
The whole experience of feeling nothing is close to what happened to me. When you turn 8 you get baptized and get a blessing to receive the holy ghost. I distinctly remember being excited to feel the holy ghost for the first time like all of my older mormon friends described, but I felt nothing and it scared me, so I always lied that I did feel it. I thought that when I got the priesthood at 12 I would feel it. I went to 3 different temples, including Salt Lake and Nauvoo, to do baptisms for the dead and felt nothing. For years I thought something was wrong with me, I had nightmares about going to outer darkness. I prayed every day trying to feel anything until I was 16 and stopped going to church, but I didn't truly lose my faith until I really looked into church history when I was 20. Now I just feel like I wasted my entire childhood and teenage years fearing something that wasn't there. It really deeply affected my mental health for a long time.
it's truly relieving once you realise too, I stopped going around 16 too and been much freer since, leaning about the church history really opened my eyes

I have to say that I at least respect Mormonism for being creative with its theology. Lots of other denominations try so hard to be mid and pass off as approachable. Irony is that it’s much more interesting to read about religions when they try to be wild/different. But if they are wild/different, they’re not really convincing enough to turn into a scalable religion

The Washington Temple is pretty iconic as it's right next to the highway that leads to DC so you see it often. I even got to go inside to the sort of lobby as I had Mormon friends, though I myself am Catholic.
As a member of the church, I find this video fascinating. It's interesting to see how other people view my religion. There are a few corrections/notes I want to make though: - First off, there's the obligatory "we're not Mormons." The correct terminology is "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," or some variation or shorthand of that (obviously you don't need to say the full thing every time, it's a long name). Not gonna harp on that point, but there it is - While baptisms for the dead are performed in a temple, other baptisms are often performed in other places, such as stake buildings - The idea that we "scavenge the ancestral vaults" inside a granite mountain is a bit silly. Most ancestry work takes place online nowadays - "Real Mormon churches are called chapels." Maybe that's the case in some places, but everyone I know just call them churches. We usually call the main room in the middle the "chapel" - The temple shown at 6:12 has a really interesting reason behind the design. It's meant to represent the cloud and pillar of fire from the Old Testament. The symbolism is kinda cool, but we pretty much all agree that it looks kinda strange lol - The idea that we created an "exclusive club" in response to not being invited to parties is a bit ridiculous, and it makes us sound almost petty - Being born gay, leaving an abusive marriage, or being born asexual does not prevent you from reaching the highest degree of glory Those were the main things I wanted to clarify, but don't take it as me not liking the video. It's always really interesting to hear an outside perspective on the church.
The majority of times when people call Mormons Mormons is because they want to separate Mormonism from Christianity, which is fair in my eyes since they don't affirm the Nicene creed (what the vast majority of people to know if someone's a Christian or not), *or the most basic* teaching. @@klukz That's an interesting point, I'd never heard that before. But I guess it makes sense. I'd of course make the argument that there's no reason to separate the church from the rest of Christianity, but of course it's obvious that I would, so take that for what it's worth.
@@marcosperez9592 Still not entirely accurate, though this is closer to the truth. People tend to put a focus on the actions you take over the person you've become, which is the reverse of how it should be. You can always repent of sinful behavior. Whether or not you agree that the behavior should be considered sinful is of course up for debate, but the point is that the doctrine is internally consistent with itself. No one is barred from heaven.
I used to be a member of the Church. It was really weird when at the same time, you have deep connection to the 'outside world' of the community. Other members didn't find it odd that we, Europeans, were laying our faith to a God and events happening and coming to America, while you're on the continent that's home for way older denominations, which origins can be traced to events in the Bible. Heck, Israel and its very real sites are just a few hours flight away, but I have to base my trust on a guy from Upstate New York and believe the glory is at a field in Missouri? At the same time, Mormons are very educated and thinking people that are encouraged to participate in society, even by local leaders, but have learnt a mindset to avoid conflict and stay in the bubble, from the Church to personal lives. They are taught to ignore every scent of skepticism and hate from outsiders, as a brutal, generational trauma of being a Mormon; Joseph Smith was persecuted, his followers were persecuted, Utahns are persecuted, now you are persecuted like your ancestors in faith etc. The way how the Church uses modern day psychology to convert people and pull people in it is really disturbing. Missionaries are advised to target people with weak mind and personality or people in hard times of their lives, without telling or exposing them to the actual routine. They are taught to reveal things a bit by bit, to avoid frightening the outside investigator. Please, if you have loved ones that are going through hard shit in their lives, tell them to stay away from the missionaries. To a person in a dark place, the smiles and acted out love from missionaries, is enough to loop them in to the Church. The Church frames itself as a progressive institution (look, they supported LGBT-laws in Utah!) and teaches its members to be open and loving, but theologically kick out everyone who aren't born to the mold of regular people. Gay people are (indirectly) advised to seek relationships with the opposite sex and have children to gain celestial glory or stay celibate and maybe miss out on the Celestial Kingdom every married family peers are going. Divorced members are sailing in a sea of mystery with their place in the afterlife, without any access to marrying again, ie. doomed to stay single after a breakup. Note that Mormons are pushed to get married soon as possible, so if you break up in your 20's, you're alone for a long time. They frame things like jerking off as a sin comparable to premarital sex, to guilt trip you for your desires and have proven mechanisms to make you confess your "sins" to the Church leaders. And nobody knows the full truth of the finances. Tithing is a noble concept, but talking about the fund of billions of dollars is seen as skepticism. They don't go to your local ward, all money from the members go to the US and grants are given back based on a secret financial formula, that even the ward accountant does not know.

As a guy living close enough to DC to see that thing on a semi regular basis I can confirm it is an eyesore at best and creepy at worst. Orthodox and Catholic Churches are way prettier.
@@Quantum-Bullet I’m actually LDS, it’s my understanding that even though we do the ordinances for you by proxy if you’ve been deceased before getting baptized you can choose to accept it or not. The point of the plan of salvation is to do the will of our Father in heaven and use the free will he gave us to do so :) Luke 22:42 I know our beliefs are strange but it’s given me a lot of peace becoming active in the church again. It's not said very well in the video, but the baptism by proxy is performed only for the dead. And in the spirit world people can accept or deny the proxy baptism.

@@hoogyoutube yeah I can totally see that, but in the cerimony they make it very clear that if you're uncomfortable with continuing you have the free will to leave, it was a very interseting experience for me when I went through the first time a few months back, still not 100% sure how to feel about it. At the end of the day Christ is king that's all there really is to it for me. Everyone's got their own way of coping with things in life or finding meaning. Thanks for the video bro

Lived in Utah my whole life, grew up very Mormon adjacent (although I never bought into it) and this is an awesome summary. It gets weirder and the history of Joseph Smith and early prophets is gross, but this about sums up heaven. Always sounded awful to me but god damn are the mormons passionate
Mr Hoog: the cosmology is a huge part of not just Mormon imagery (visit temple square and you will see it everywhere- not surrounding the Christus statue and carved in granite on the outside walls all around the temple), it is imprinted on the mental processes of every Mormon through their temple rituals. So going “too deep into cosmology” is nearly impossible. I moved from Holland when I was 18 to do my two year mission in England. Then ended up at BYU, worked at their MTC in Provo, worked at the church office in Slc, sang with Mormon tabernacle choir, etc etc. Nothing in your video was over-stated or wrong, compliments on your summary. The Mormons are not a Christian denomination as their baptism is not considered a valid Christian baptism as the Mormon baptism is not categorized as a Trinitarian baptism.

Temple recommend holding member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints here. Good video honestly. I would say probably 80% of the way there. There are a few points you made which are not true or are not accurate and I would be happy to speak to those if You would like.
