As you rightly said, the population is very densely concentrated in the plains and the basins of rivers of north India. Rivers have been a crucial part of the Indian civilization. The Indus valley culture, the Vedic society, and other cultures flourished because of the rivers of Indian subcontinent. Indian religious texts give a lot of importance to rivers. Rivers are considered sacred. Like a god or a goddess. People still bathe in the Ganges (even when the water quality isn't the best) because they see it as a purifying ritual to wash away their sins. A bit of a correction: The Deccan Plateau has large areas of black soil, resulting in the largest area under cotton cultivation in the world and make India one of the top cotton producers. Also, sugarcane is grown in South India as much as in the north.

Fun fact : Within Mumbai we have a national park admeasuring 104 sqkm. So 20 million people are packed in an area less than 500sq km.

Me, being an Indian had no idea northeastern states (Meghalaya and Manipur) had a such a high fertility rate! It's astonishing to to see the diversity in India... one could live just a 500 miles apart and look, dress and speak completely different!

Fun Fact: Mumbai City has not only the same population as My Country, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿, but also both of them also has a same GDP or economy of around $225,000,000,000 Billion, Wow 👏 😳, what a Coincidence.

Good explanation. Have to admit that even though I spent a couple of years in India, albeit at a younger age, I learned something new today. While I knew the north was populous I never realized it was that dense. Making this video certainly helps anyone educate themselves as to how population density patterns might have developed in India.

Yes, the glaciers help maintain river flow during India's dry season, but over the whole year, the VAST majority of water contributed to India's rivers comes from RAIN falling on the southern slopes of the Himalayas and their foothills, and on the Indo-Gangetic plain itself.

As a non-Indian, I always think the Brahmaputra river deserves more attention. It's not as famous as Nile, Amazon, or Mississippi, but Brahmaputra's trail is simply equally impressive, originating from high plateau of Tibet and flowing through vast portion of Tibet as well, carving through Himalayas to create some of the deepest valleys around the world, and when the river actually reaches the lowland of India, the sheer scale of the river becomes simply mighty. I haven't been to India to see the river myself, but just the photos and footage on the Internet already amaze me.

This video fully explains why Bangladesh has a higher population than Russia as well, it's just the fact that throughout the human history this region has been so fertile that people in general never had to go through the similar hardship faced by people living in colder or dryer regions and if certain indian states were to be independent like west bengal or uttar pradesh they'd have similar to even higher population then Bangladesh

I traveled overland from Chennai to Kochi, across the dry plains of Tamil Nadu, over the Western Ghats, and down into the lush jungles of Kerala. Aside from the region being fascinating culturally, the geographic diversity of South India is incredible. The best of this was Munnar, where the climate is just right for mass tea production. The verdant hills covered with tea plantations makes it one of the most beautiful places I've visited.

Himalayas are Blessing to India. Alone Himachal Pradesh provides river like Ravi, Chenab, Satluj( partially) and Beas. proud to born in Himachal Pradesh.

As a Bangladeshi and as a part of North Indian Plain I can confirm that the amount of rain that pours here is unfathomable to most of the westerners. Assam & Meghalaya(Wettest place on earth) recorded 858mm of rain just in June 2022 and we happened to be on the receiver end of all the water. For context London receives 585 mm of rain throughout the year.

I'm from Kerala, southern state in India. We get more than 3000 millimetres of rain every year. While the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu receives only less than 1000 millimetres of rain every year. This clearly shows the impact of western ghats on the climate of India.

As a guy from hyderabad, i must say that southern lands are more fertile than what the narrator has conveyed. Indian's one of the forest reserve do exist in southern part filled with rich soil which is perfect for vegetables and crops.

Would love to see more video's around India. They are the largest nation on earth when it comes to population but it's rare for them to be mentioned in the west. I'd like to know more and your way of explaining things works really well for me. :)

My hometown was on the edge of Western Ghats and believe me, the amount of rainfall most places in India receive is something most Westerners cannot comprehend.. It is genuinely an ungodly amount of rain to the point that it is more destructive than helpful to agriculture.. Also most of the water goes back to the Arabian Sea and some of it flows eastward.. I moved to Toronto a few years ago and I can guarantee you that what people might call an afternoon's worth of rain in India will overflow Toronto's Don River and flood the road..

India is itself a Continent, a separate World having diverse, colorful and beautiful mix of races, cultures, religions, ethnicities, languages and traditions. Almost every kind of Geographical feature is available in India from coastal plains, rivers, streams, delta, bays, seas, Oceans and islands to deserts , plateau, fertile lands, valleys, hills and high snow covered mountains. I admire and Love Indian Geography

As a South Indian(from Karnataka), our dams and other infrastructure have become part of our identity. They have literally transformed our lands from arid, infertile patches to land that can even grow rice. The Krishnaraja Sagara Dam(KRS) in particular is a tourist attraction for us but most non-Kannadigas don't understand why we travel 100s of kilometres to cherish a wall of concrete so much lol.

The thing you need to understand is that the south-west monsoon which originates in the Arabian Sea forms the major chunk of rainfall in India, hence the continuity and large elevations of the western ghats actually have a greater detrimental effect on the Deccan plateau as otherwise to the Eastern ghats. Moreover, it is these same peaky mountain range that are responsible for the monsoon up in the north as they direct these clouds and winds towards the north

It is mind-blowing that Uttar Pradesh have similar population with that an entire Indonesia, another country who known for having a huge population, despite having 8times more land than Uttar Pradesh, their population is somewhere similar, it's like Java of India, but it only contain 20% of India's population, unlike Java who have 60% of Indonesia's

I am from Chhattisgarh- a tiny anamoly between the north and south divide. You might have noticed in the precipitation map that a deep blue stretch was seen in the middle of the country. That's the Mahanadi Basin. The name "Mahanadi" literally translates to "The Great River". Mahanadi is one of the biggest rivers of the country and the river provides continuous water supply to Chhattisgarh forming an arch and thus a wonderful river basin. Chhatiisgarh on a political map looks like a sea horse, but on a topographical map looks like a sink, or a bowl. Its surrounded by hills- a segment of Aravalli mountain ranges and various other hills that trap the monsoon winds forming almost a lake like catchment. This generates a suitable enviornment if paddy plantation which is why CG is also a leading producer of rice. The population of Chhattisgarh is quite low compared to other states, however its still more than the entire population of Australia.

It became apparent to me that himalayas is one of the most important geological features of the face of this planet. It is the source to Indus, Ganges, Bramaputra, Irrawady, Mekong, Huang He and Yangtze. It provides fresh water to most of Asia and more than 50% of humanity. And if it weren't for these rivers, perhaps none of the Asian civilizations would have started. Crazy to think about.

One thing which wasn't discussed in this video are that most of those areas of India with the highest fertility rates also are the poorest states in India and lag behind when it comes to education, GDP, and access to birth control. More developed parts tend to have lower fertility rates for the same reason we see it in highly industrialized countries and cities.

In the 21st century being dependent too much on Agriculture is not a good choice. North India is too dependent on Agriculture due to Geography but South India has dominant Services & Manufacturing Sector which explains why majority of India's Metropolitan cities lie to the South of the Vindhyas.

It’s not accurate to say that the mountains block the movement of air. The air does flow over the mountains, but nearly all the moisture in the air precipitates out before reaching the summit due to adiabatic cooling. The process happens in reverse as the air descends the other side of the mountain, where the air warms as air pressure increases, resulting in a humid air mass that can hold almost all the remaining moisture in the air without precipitating.

Interesting video. Its also noteworthy that the Western Ghats is one of the most biologically diverse parts of the country with a several major wildlife sanctuaries . . . because of the steep rainforest covered slopes - its not as suitable for major agricultural conversion.

Superb video. Largest Commercial & Industrial Centre Of North is located in Delhi NCR. In West it is Mumbai. In East Kolkata & In South it is Chennai. But if you observe outskirts of Chennai, Bangalore or Hyderabad there are no continuous population distribution. But Kerala is not like that. From Kasargod to Thiruvananthapuram. From Ponnani to Palakkad. The population density is mind blowing. (Most densely populated chain like human inhabitation in the subcontinent after Yamuna - Ganga regions comprising the states of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, UttarPradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and country of Bangladesh.)

Uttar Pradesh is interesting, it's one of the rare examples of a largely rural yet very dense population. Basically, not that many big cities, but you're never very far away from the nearest house. Rwanda and Burundi are the same story.

I live in the southern side of the line you mentioned in the state of maharashtra people are mostly concentrated in cities if you go in mountainous regions and very remote villages you will find very less people there.

Also fertility rate of South India Decreased after 1970 .. 1 or 2 child per family .. Decrease the Property and run towards wealth and pay more tax .. Check the Base population of India in 1947 and fertility rate ..

I may not have geographical data like you but as a south Indian with common sense I can assure you that the population is lower in south not because we have less food but because southern states are more educated and have 2 kids per couple on average while the states above the line have more kids per couple because less awareness on family planning.

I live in Kerala in the narrow strip of land between the Arabian Sea and Western Ghats. On some clear days if we stand near the coast, we can see the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. Western Ghats are UNESCO World Heritage Site with some unique flora and fauna. Some amazing hill stations are located in these mountains in all states through which it passes.

This guy has put more effort in explaining India's geography than any other Indian youtuber. I tip my hat to you Sir and may you be blessed with millions of views.

I must note that moist air can climb over mountains, but the air will then warm up and the saturation point will become higher so that the air is able to hold on the rain

I'm presently in my Village ( in Uttar Pradesh) This year wheat produce has been very high. They forgot to keep all the producer inside and at night stray cattles visited and ate some of that ,. But since the produce is good no one cares . Everyone is in good mood. Even the large farms here will seem to be small if you compare them to industrial scale farms of usa or Canada.

If you compare the quality of life however you will find a completely different picture. It’s called a slums for a reason. This is more prevalent in UP and Bihar. However, the some of the best places to live in is below that line.

In India, the Northern Plains are fed by glacier fed rivers, hence the area is densely populated.

But actually The Southern city Banglore receives enormous rainfall thought out the year, like literally its so wet here being in the Deccan plateau

As far as the population explosion is concerned, the damage was done 30-40 years ago when the fertility was over 3 for most of india, as shown in the video the fertility rate is either at 2 or even below that, its fallen so rapidly that some researches even fear that India might grow old before it can actually become rich so you can't even introduce aggressive population control policies like China did. Unfortunately, the 2 states that stick out like a sore thumb in almost every statistic about India and its states, the same states also contribute to nearly 30% of india's population.

I belong to bihar. It's true during agrigarian economy this region was prosperous. And population density was high. But after development of medical sciences, whole country population growed exponentially, and because of gangetic planes having higher base for exponential growth here population growed insanely. And nowadays this area just send man power to whole country.

The sheer amount of people makes the prospect of living in India seem utterly hellish, especially if you're claustrophobic

The effect of the wester ghats is similar to the southern alps in new zealand: very wet, lush west coast, flat, dry plains from the mountains to the east coast (where I live, in Canterbury!)

Plains formed by Ganga Yamuna, their tributaries give priority to people to settle and Brahmaputra river also accomdate people.

Also literacy rate is less in northern part of India, which also has impact on population in those areas.

As an Indian American who just went to visit the Himalayas, I greatly appreciated and truly understood this video so much more. It's so beautiful and lush green up North with all those hills and rivers. Down South where I'm from it's still surprisingly green and theres a lot of water coming in, especially into my dads state of Andhra Pradesh, but in Tamil Nadu its hella dry in places. The river going through my hometown is more often bone dry than not.

One other reason for low agriculture activity in Southern India can be understood by the mineral distribution chart and type of activity are involved in. Southern India is much rich in natural resources and minerals, and people are less involved in agriculture sector. Also, Southern India has larger non-veg eating population also, they are involved in fishing. This further reduces the dependence on agriculture sector.

Great video! Just an observation is that this video indicates the population of Brazil as being between 215 and 220 million people, which was the forecast based on the 2010 census. But a new census was released a few weeks ago confirming that the Brazilian population is "only" of 203 million people currently, showing a huge slowdown with the lowest growth ever recorded. According to experts, this indicates that the country's population should start to decline from 2030 onwards.

I am really happy living in the south of the line specifically between the Arabian sea and the western ghats of Karnataka. We have a diverse , rich culture here with fertile lands which can grow rice , coconut, Sugar cane , all types of lentils , expensive spices and many more. We also have ancient temples and buzzling commericals hubs. People here live a very Peaceful life and full of prosperity.
